Since it seems everyone forgot or somehow is unaware, today is the 57th anniversary of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

I was in school sitting at my desk when the announcement was made. Shocking to say the least. I also vividly remember John John, President Kennedy's son, saluting his father's casket. Extremely touching.

57th anniversary of his death, not of him.

Kennedy curse my ass. Papa was a rum runner, another skied into a tree playing football on a ski slope, and john john flew into conditions he was not qualified and killed a couple of others. And then there was Ted...and Jackie...hoo boy...that dynasty was a trip.

Our principal came running in, said the President's been shot in Dallas, then ran out. A couple minutes later, we saw him run out of the building, jump in his car, and go tearing out of the parking lot. Someone asked where he was going, and someone else said 'Maybe Dallas?'

School got out early, my mom came to pick me up and chewed her nails all the way home. The next few days it seemed like it was all news on the TV. Oswald captured, Oswald in jail, Johnson taking the oath of office with Jackie beside him still in her bloodstained dress, JFK lying in state, the funeral, Jon Jon saluting his dad's casket as it went by.

Then ten years of the Vietnam war.

I was driving through Dallas a couple of years back and, due to construction and toll avoidance, ended up on 35E. Even then, it was eerie seeing exits signs for Dealey Plaza, Parkland Hospital, and Love Field knowing the sad history that happened there on 11/22/63.

The big question about John Kennedy is: would he have kept us out of the War in Vietnam? The only way to avoid that war was to let the Communists take over the South. Because the overwhelming majority of the Vietnamese supported Ho Chi Minh, that was the right thing to do. Barry Goldwater would have yelled and screamed, but I think he still would have lost to Kennedy in 1964. The election would have been closer though. With a narrow victory over Goldwater, and without two to one majorities in both houses of Congress, the Kennedy administration would moved slower on civil rights and faster to crush the black ghetto riots. There would not have been a Republican backlash over the black ghetto riots, but there may have been one over the Communist takeover of South Vietnam.

I think Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, but I can think of two conspiracy scenarios. During Kennedy's presidency the CIA made several attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro. A group of KGB agents may have decided to hit back. They could have contacted Oswald when he was in the Soviet Union. This would not have been a conspiracy by the KGB, but by several rouge agents acting on their own.

If KGB agents had conspired to kill Kennedy the Warren Commission would have covered up the evidence to avoid the possibility of a war with the Soviet Union.

Second, Joseph P. Kennedy seems to have paid Mafia gangsters to stuff ballot boxes in the election of 1960 to give his son the presidency. When the Kennedy Administration began to go after the Mafia, those gangsters would have belt betrayed. Again, this would not have been a conspiracy by the Mafia, but by a few gangsters acting alone. The Warren Commission would have covered this up to avoid drawing attention to the possibility that Kennedy's 1960 victory over Richard Nixon may have been illegitimate.

      And Jack Ruby was who?
A night club owner with ties to the mob.
The term conspiracy theory was first used, from the CIA, to try and credit the warren commission.

Silliness. Go to the book repository and see for yourself. Look at the actual picture of Kennedy's head. Clearly he was shot from the grassy knoll and not from the 6th floor by Oswald. Every hunter knows what entrance and exit wounds look like.

We had already had troops killed in Vietnam:

July 8, 1059 - Maj. Dale R. Buis and Master Sgt. Chester M. Ovnand become the first Americans killed in the American phase of the Vietnam War when guerrillas strike a Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) compound in Bien Hoa, 20 miles northeast of Saigon. The group had arrived in South Vietnam on November 1, 1955, to provide military assistance. The organization consisted of U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps personnel who provided advice and assistance to the Ministry of Defense, Joint General Staff, corps and division commanders, training centers, and province and district headquarters.

    https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-americans-killed-in-south-vietnam

Kennedy didn't send the troops in, but he expanded the Military Assistance Advisory Groups (which became Military Advisory Command, Vietnam MACV), who trained South Vietnamese and accompanied them on missions as supposed noncombatant advisors. This later led to the formation of MACV/SOG, the studies and Observations Group, a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War.

So we were well involved, before we sent combat troops in 1965.

Good or bad, and there are opinions both ways, this is a day to respect him and his contributions to the country. He, like all of us, was human and had flaws. We all do. I DVR'd this a while back and still have on the box. It is a quite interesting look at his presidency. Like or dislike, I found it interesting.

He could have recognized a mistake and pulled out. Johnson could have too. So could have Nixon. An immoral war cannot become moral by continuing to fight it.

A "moral" war can be fought without morality if the commanders waste lives for political or selfish reasons.

      Like President Johnson did.

And President Eisenhower counseled Kennedy that he should stay out of Vietnam unless he was prepared to commit fully to a war.

If there was a conspiracy Lee Harvey Oswald was part of it. His finger prints were on the rifle that was connected to bullets in Kennedy by ballistics tests. After he was arrested he tested positive in a paraffin test. That met that he had recently fired a gun.

    1. shootersa
The paraffin test is not conclusive to discharging a firearm. That aside, there is little doubt that Oswald assasinated Kennedy.
The question is, did he act alone, or did the Russians, Castro, the mob, the CIA or someone else conspire with him?

      Shooter thinks Oswald acted alone.

For Pete's sake Shooter. Go see for yourself. There's no way to hit a man right between the eyes with an open sighted Russian rifle
who is in a moving car away from the shooter, from a 6th floor building. At that angle. And with a definite pin hole in his forehead, and 3 flaps of scalp coming out the back of his head. And the film shows he was hit from the front, as his head snaps back, and the Warren Commission claims that when you hit something from the back, it will snap backwards. TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. These so-called commissions are told what results to come up with, and they do. Starr commission? what a joke.

I have no doubt that Oswald did not fire shots, but he did not hit Kennedy between the eyes. It was impossible. Go to Dallas and see for yourself. I'll meet you there to explain. I even wrote in their book, and this was years before Judge Judy, Liar Liar Pants On Fire.

I heard it on the playground at St. Ferdinand's, my Catholic parochial school. The teacher told us when we resumed classes. Even at that age, I knew who he was, and that it was a big deal.

Even though my dad was a staunch Republican, when Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald and was arrested, he said, "They should have given him a medal". Funny how that is one of my clearest memories of that time. It's not that my dad was a vigilante type, but he respected the Presidency, even if the President was not his choice.

Far from where we are today.

I think the tabloid media started to change that, and now with instant access to information on the internet, people no longer view the President as being off limits, and they scrutinize all.

When Kennedy was President, even though it apparently was common knowledge that he had numerous affairs, the media never reported on that. I am pretty sure that if he were President in this modern time, the people would view him under a microscope, just as they do now with all public officials.

Me, and I'm trying to keep politics and opinions out of this, want to respect this day. It is solemn to me. And, no I do not agree with many of JFK's politics or agendas. But yet, I agree with some as well. This is a day to respect a person, and a leader, who was taken out of this world violently. Conspiracy theories aside, I will respect the day. Debates can wait until another day in my opinion.
