Vicious wind and tornadoes put a deadly exclamation point on the end of an extraordinary year for extreme weather in the United States.

Earlier in 2021, Texas froze and Seattle roasted. Parts of California flooded, burned, then flooded again. A hurricane that slammed Louisiana was so waterlogged that its remnants inundated New York City. A blizzard hit Hawaii.

The weather was wilder than usual this year, and the reasons vary, climate experts say.

Crazy cold snap? Giant hail? December tornadoes? Those happen now and then on a planet with natural variations in weather patterns.

But evidence increasingly shows that historic heat waves, monster rain events and ultra-intense storms are exacerbated by the warmer air and water of our overheating planet...

It’s nearly impossible to tie an individual storm to climate change, but the trends show a greater probability of violent storms in a warmer climate, said Victor Gensini, an atmospheric sciences professor at Northern Illinois University who studies tornadoes and other severe storms...

Beginning in mid-June, a blanket of unprecedented hot air spread over the typically mild Pacific Northwest, an event scientists say was “virtually impossible” without climate change.

Locations in seven states set all-time heat records. Seattle hit 108 degrees, Portland 116, and Salem, Ore., recorded 117 on June 28, matching the hottest day ever recorded in Las Vegas. Hundreds of deaths were attributed to the heat.

A problem with climate change is that once the average climate on earth gets hotter it will be impossible to cool it down again. The problems we have been having are going to get worse, unless we make major reductions in private property rights and economic growth.

Something that has always been very troubling to me...is who and where it is decided that the ''0 baseline'' is set at in all the pretty graphs that suggest the world is coming to an end if we dont do something to prevent a problem that doesn't exist.

It seems them there pretty little graph makers can suggest whatever they fucking want.

A 'year to year' comparison is not even close to being truthful or revealing of any actual facts...

Comparisons need to be done over a period of thousands and thousands of years...even millions of years.

And this is the problem, because the time unit necessary to appréciate the trend is at least centuries which are beyond memory and the capacity of people to project themselves onto this scale. Then comes the question of trusting the output got from figures. It is a question of belief thus irrationnality. How and why I can have confidence (or not) in the statement of this institution or this political or social body when I do not have the time and capacities to build my own opinion?

 

I recall in the early 60s I use to lift off the ground at a local airport headed toward JFK, or maybe it was still IDL at the time, and you could see NYC had a clear brown dome over it.

What this tells us is that climatology has not the faintest idea how much – or, rather, how little – global warming man may cause. All those multi-thousand-page reports are pure guesswork.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection approved a water quality permit for a controversial natural gas pipeline on Thursday.

The Mountain Valley Pipeline's planned 300-mile route cuts through West Virginia and Virginia.

Appalachian Voices Virginia Policy Director Peter Anderson said in a news release the latest permitting decision was “contrary to robust evidence that the MVP cannot be built without violating state water quality standards.”

The West Virginia permit was needed before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could move forward with dredge-and-fill permits in the state, the environmental group said.

In Virginia, a recent decision by the State Water Control Board to allow the infrastructure to cross streams and wetlands has resulted in an appeal to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Attempts to kill the $6.2 billion project have so far failed. Five energy companies constructing the pipeline say it’s necessary to provide natural gas along the East Coast.

 

........ and meanwhile, in Colorado, the utilities have announced rolling black outs in counties surrounding the Boulder fire.
Why?
So they can reserve natural gas supplies for "future adverse weather events".
Pundits are claiming it's so the utilities can jack up the price of natural gas.
Shooter thinks it's just poor management.
