Woman Says Tara Reade Told Her In Mid-1990s That Joe Biden Sexually Assaulted Her



A former neighbor of Tara Reade, the former Senate aide who has accused Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her when she worked in his office in 1993, has come forward to corroborate part of Reade’s allegation.

Lynda LaCasse told Business Insider in a report published Monday that Reade confided in her about the alleged assault in 1995 or 1996, when the two women lived in the same apartment complex in Morro Bay, California.

“This happened, and I know it did because I remember talking about it,” LaCasse told the outlet.

Reade was one of at least eight women last year to publicly accuse Biden of inappropriate touching. She said at the time that she worked in his Senate office when she was in her mid-20s and that he would make her uncomfortable by running his fingers up her neck or putting his hand on her shoulder.

In response to the allegations of inappropriate touching, Biden acknowledged last year that “social norms are changing.” He said he would be “more mindful about respecting personal space in the future.”

Reade expanded on her allegation last month in separate interviews with The Intercept and with podcast host Katie Halper. She said Biden pushed her against a wall in a Senate office building, reached up her skirt and penetrated her with his fingers while she was delivering a duffel bag to him at her manager’s request.

Biden’s presidential campaign has vehemently denied Reade’s allegation of assault.

Asked for comment for this story, a spokesman for Biden’s campaign referred HuffPost to a statement Kate Bedingfield, the campaign’s communications director, issued April 13.

“Vice President Biden has dedicated his public life to changing the culture and the laws around violence against women,” Bedingfield said in her statement. “He authored and fought for the passage and reauthorization of the landmark Violence Against Women Act. He firmly believes that women have a right to be heard ― and heard respectfully.”

“Such claims should also be diligently reviewed by an independent press,” her statement continued. “What is clear about this claim: it is untrue. This absolutely did not happen.”

Reade worked for Biden’s office from December 1992 to August 1993 and helped manage the office’s interns, The New York Times reported earlier this month. She said she complained to several of Biden’s senior aides about the senator’s behavior toward her at the time and also filed a complaint with the Senate.

Reade said she was subsequently stripped of most of her duties. She said Ted Kaufman, Biden’s chief of staff at the time, later told her she wasn’t a good fit for the job and gave her a month to find a new one.

Kaufman told the Times he “did not know her” and that Reade did not complain to him about Biden’s behavior. The Biden campaign told the newspaper it does not have the complaint that Reade allegedly filed.

Marianne Baker, who served as Biden’s executive assistant between 1982 and 2000, said in a statement last month that she “never once” witnessed or received any reports of inappropriate conduct.

The Times reported no other person accused Biden of sexual assault during its investigation into Reade’s allegation.

“I remember her saying, here was this person that she was working for and she idolized him,” LaCasse told Business Insider. “She felt like she was assaulted, and she really didn’t feel there was anything she could do.”

LaCasse said Reade became emotional when she detailed the alleged assault.

“She was crying,” LaCasse said. “She was upset. And the more she talked about it, the more she started crying. I remember saying that she needed to file a police report.”

Reade has alleged that Biden became annoyed with her when she resisted his advances. “I heard you liked me,” he told her, according to Reade. She said he then told her she was “nothing” to him before touching her shoulders, telling her she was “OK,” and then walking away.

LaCasse told Insider she couldn’t remember all the details, including where Reade said the alleged assault occurred or what Biden may have said.

“I remember the skirt,” LaCasse said. “I remember the fingers. I remember she was devastated.”

LaCasse told Insider she’s a Democrat and plans to vote for Biden despite Reade’s allegation. Still, she felt compelled to stick up for her friend, who has faced a wave of criticism and death threats since accusing Biden of assault.

“I have to support her just because that’s what happened,” LaCasse said. “We need to stand up and tell the truth.”

Reade told Vox News last month that she initially supported Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in the presidential race and then supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) after she dropped out. It’s unclear who Reade plans to vote for now that Sanders has exited the race.

Lorraine Sanchez, who worked alongside Reade in California state Sen. Jack O’Connell’s office from 1994 to 1996, told Insider that Reade had told her at the time that she’d had a boss in Washington who sexually harassed her. Reade said she was fired after speaking up about the harassment, according to Sanchez.

Sanchez said she does not remember if Reade offered details about the harassment or if she named Biden as the perpetrator.

Reade’s brother Collin Moulton told Insider that he recalled his sister telling him that Biden “had his hand under her clothes at some point.”

Reade said she also told her mother about the alleged assault at the time. Last week, video surfaced of a woman, who Reade said is her mother, calling into a live broadcast of “Larry King Live” on CNN in 1993. King was airing a segment called “Washington: The Cruelest City on Earth?”

“I’m wondering what a staffer would do besides go to the press in Washington,” the caller said. “My daughter has just left there, after working for a prominent senator, and could not get through with her problems at all, and the only thing she could have done was go to the press, and she chose not to do it out of respect for him.”

Neither King nor the panel directly addressed the caller’s question and instead discussed whether they would ever consider leaking damaging information about a rival to the press.

As I have said before I neither believe nor disbelieve this accusation, I do not have enough information to make a judgement either way, but as more and more comes out we can all start to put it all together.

Thanks for this. I have seen a couple other fact checks pointing out the many flaws in Reade's story and credibility but this is by far the most comprehensive.

Women's groups start to break silence on Biden allegations, as candidate makes first statement​

Joe Biden argues searching the university's Senate records could expose past political positions that can be taken out of context during the campaign; Peter Doocy reports.

Women’s groups are beginning to break their silence on sexual assault allegations against presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden after the embattled candidate responded to the claims for the first time on Friday and said the alleged incident "never happened."

While they largely stayed quiet for weeks, a few groups had started to publicly pressure Biden to speak up in the run-up to Friday's statements. But the focus wasn't entirely on Biden, either. Now that the interview is over, at least one of those groups sought to use Biden's statement to paint a contrast with President Trump's handling of the multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him.

“We have reached a pivotal moment in our nation when candidates for president are accused of sexual assault,” Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, said in a statement. “Today, Vice President Joe Biden sat down and directly addressed the allegation against him with the seriousness it deserves, something that the current president has never done.”

“No longer can claims like this go ignored. Vice President Joe Biden needed to address Tara Reade’s allegation today," Tchen, a former aide to former President Barack Obama, said. "We call for complete transparency into this claim and the multiple claims against President Donald Trump. As we go forward, American voters are entitled to a full understanding of all allegations of this nature. Women should be heard, treated respectfully, and have their allegations taken seriously."

She added, "By no means is the conversation about sexual assault and power in America over."

“We are glad to see Vice President Biden take a needed first step in addressing this issue head on. We now look to Biden to continue to push this conversation, and our country, forward.

Tchen’s statement came after Biden answered allegations by former staffer Tara Reade that he assaulted her in 1993. The response came in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and in a written statement.

“No, it is not true,” Biden said. “I’m saying unequivocally it never, never happened and it didn’t. It never happened.”

Biden was pressed on his past comments about women coming forward with allegations of sexual harassment and assault, specifically his comments surrounding the confirmation hearing of now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Biden said that “believing women means taking women’s claims seriously." He added that “women have a right to be heard,” but that their claims should be investigated by the press.

“They should start off with the presumption that they’re telling the truth,” Biden said. “Then you have to look at the circumstances and the facts. And the facts in this case do not exist.”

The case puts women’s groups, who are typically sympathetic to Biden’s candidacy but who demanded that similar decades-old accusations against Kavanaugh be believed, in a difficult position.

Alexis McGill Johnson, Acting President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said in a statement Friday that the group is "glad to see Vice President Biden take a needed first step in addressing this issue head on. We now look to Biden to continue to push this conversation, and our country, forward."

“We cannot let this conversation devolve into the kind of shame and ridicule that too many survivors face," she said. "That ridicule is what keeps millions silent after they experience sexual violence or assault. That shame is what allows violence to continue."

Tchen, in an interview with MSNBC, tried to highlight the contrast with Trump, who has also denied the allegations against him.

“It’s the voters in this election that are going to make a decision, and are entitled to full transparency,” Tchen said. "Vice President Biden has called for that transparency, President Trump has not ... he has tried to silence survivors who have come forward.”

Groups that have been vocal in the #MeToo movement have been largely quiet about the allegations against Biden. But on Thursday, some of those groups started to increase pressure on Biden to answer allegations.

“Saying we believe survivors doesn’t mean only when it’s politically convenient. This isn’t a fringe issue, it’s one that affects all of us. This crosses political party, race, gender, income level, and sexual orientation,” Planned Parenthood Action Fund's Johnson said in a statement. “Vice President Biden must address this allegation directly. Our country is hungry for leadership on this issue. Now is the time to give it to them.”

The Women’s March tweeted that Biden should "speak to his past, and he needs to do so immediately."

"No women should carry the burden for his silence,” the group said.

But it will remain to be seen if those groups, as well as groups like NARAL Pro-Choice America and the National Organization for Women, will be satisfied with Biden’s response. Those organizations did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Fox News.

While Biden gave a firm denial of Reade’s accusations, and also called on the National Archive to search for relevant records, he declined to approve a search for Senate records at the University of Delaware, saying that those files would not pertain to personnel issues.

Heather Drevna, vice president of communications for anti-sexual violence group RAINN, also issued a statement Friday pushing for the release of any relevant records: "We appreciate Vice President Biden finally addressing Tara Reade's allegations. These allegations deserve a rigorous investigation, and we urge Vice President Biden to release any and all records that may be relevant, including those housed at the University of Delaware, in addition to any Senate records housed at the National Archives. We urge him, his campaign, and former staff to cooperate fully and provide complete transparency."

Former Biden Senate staffer Reade and seven other women had come forward last year to accuse Biden of inappropriate contact. However, the story she told in March was far more graphic, raising the allegation to the level of sexual assault.

Reade told Fox News about numerous instances, particularly in major meetings, where Biden would "put his hands on my shoulders usually from behind, and put his fingers underneath my hair, on my neck.”

During a March interview with podcast host Katie Halper, Reade described the alleged assault in 1993.

"He greeted me, he remembered my name, and then we were alone. It was the strangest thing," Reade told Halper. "There was no like, exchange really. He just had me up against the wall.”

She continued: “His hands were on me and underneath my clothes, and he went down my skirt and then up inside it and he penetrated me with his fingers and he was kissing me at the same time and he was saying some things to me.”

Her allegations have received some support in the form of a resurfaced “Larry King Live” interview that appears to show Reade’s mother referring to the accusation, albeit in vague terms. Additionally, two more people who knew Reade have come forward to say she told them about the allegation at the time.

Reade has not yet reacted to Biden's denial.
