There has been very little communication with the island nation for about 24 hours since soon after the tsunami hit the capital , last evening.
One satellite phone call is all I've heard of.

The eruption was from an active volcano 63 kilometers (?) offshore from the capital ,
and clearly heard on phone videos .

There were reports of booms heard here at the time , but it wasn't realised that those booms were in fact the shockwave from that eruption ,
    over 2,000 kilometres away,
and they were heard all over the whole length of the country.
    Incredible.

We saw some footage of the first waves of the tsunami , so know there's been some damage ,
and we know much of Tongatapu is covered in grey ash .

So far , no reports of fatalities .

We will send surveillance aircraft tomorrow if safe ,
but currently the huge ash cloud is up over 90,000 feet ,
so no flying that direction today

That's above the ceiling of our patrol and surveillance aircraft , capable of a non stop return flight , with useful time in the area ,
    and drop capabilities.

They in for a kak few weeks.
Do you know if any support boats have been dispatched?

    1. slutwolf
      Not to my knowledge.
Unlikely yet as there is no information available of what they might need .
I'm sure our airraft will carry as much water and emergency medical sipplies as possible , so they can drop them anywhere they find need.

Navy and air force will be on alert , ready to load and deliver as soon as they know what to .
That's just standard practice here for our Pacific neighbors.

Glad to know there is preparation and cooperation. I hope the situation is less dire than it appears.

    1. slutwolf
We simply have no indication of whether it is dire or not.
The tsunami we saw there before communications were lost were not big ,
and what reached here were also only small.

I was just looking at satellite video of the explosion. I saw one video of a "small" tsunami wave, but do not know if that was just a "preliminary" wave. The ash cloud you described as being over 90,000 feet, sounded (and looked!) ominous!

    1. slutwolf
Yeah , the satellite images of the eruption are quite extraordinary
Absolutely massive , and you can clearly see the shockwave radiating out from it at a great rate of knots.

Of course all that energy released that you can see , is above ground and water.
We have no way of knowing how much was released into the water.

    Some interesting snippets:
    and still no communication.

GNS Science volcano duty officer Dr Geoff Kilgour said it was likely the vents that exploded were just beneath the sea surface, sending a 20km-high plume of smoke and ash into the stratosphere which spread into a large umbrella cloud of around 300km in diameter.

That resulted in ash, small particles of broken rock falling back towards the earth, and an increased presence of sulphur from the explosion.

"You've had magma somewhere between 11,000 and 12,000 degrees, interacting with seawater, that very quickly changes that water into steam so it rapidly explodes and fragments that rock into very small pieces, and then it sent a very strong impulsive explosion and the really unusual aspect about this eruption is that it's essentially sent this huge pressure wave, right around the globe."

    eight_col_017_242794.jpg

    ** ** **

Dr Cronin said the Hunga eruption was a one-in-1000-year event.

Radiocarbon dating suggested one major eruption of this scale occurred about AD1100 and another in AD200, he said.

"This, along with other data from the volcanic ash records, suggests a recurrence interval of 900 to 1000 years for very large eruptions at the volcano.

"The current eruption seems to be one of these large events which fits with the timing since the last of these in [circa] AD1100."

It's mind boggling to imagine a force powerful enough to create a tsunami hitting the west coast of the U.S, which is more than 5,ooo miles away.
I cannot imagine how bad the impact is over there.

What I have seen so far is that there has been no major tidal wave. All that volcanic shit in the atmosphere seems to be the problem to deal with. I can send little else but good thoughts to the people affected.

So why was the volcanic eruption so huge???
These are Andesitic type volcanoes. Like the ones around Indonesia. They tend to erupt massive anyway. But when the magma chamber empties the tops of the volcanoes collapse (like Krakatoa). Likely in this case, inrushing sea water turns to steam and also adds a lot of power to the explosion. One bucket of water makes ten buckets of steam to give you an idea. (how a steam engine gets it power) Think of chucking water into a really hot fry pan. So in this instance, it may be likely that magma collapse and water combined to create a larger explosion.
There are many more reports now of confirmed cases of the event being heard on the Eastern half of Australia as well (and being recorded on pressure devices!).

Don't know about south Asian ring of fire,
but we're all part of the Pacific rim of fire , which also inludeds a number of volcanoes here , both on land and undersea,
    some very recently active.
(Some may remember the White Island tragedy)
Also , Tonga virtually sits on the edge of the Tonga Trench , the second deepest bit of ocean on the planet (after the Mariana Trench)
    which
same fracture continues south into our 1,000km long Kermadec Trench
    (past Kermadec Islands)
also reaching down over 10,000 metres.

(this fracture zone being the fastest moving on the planet , apparently)

      Not necessarily.
There is a sort of ring around the Philippines Plate , but that ring only comes down from about mid Japan , to Northwest New Guinea ,
a hell of a long way from Tonga.

But certainly could be termed South Asian.

There has been another explosive eruption of the same volcano in Tonga today.
    No information.
    Still almost no communication working.

However we have had reports that the first tsunami waves we saw , from the first eruption (before they cut communications) , were the biggest ,
as you would normally expect ,
so that's good news on that one.
At least there were no monsters.

Let's hope this second one was at least no worse.

Our Orion went up today , so expect there will be a lot more info once the return.

They're fully upgraded , and can stay in the air 16 hours or more.
Just hope they didn't get chased out by the new eruption.
Possibly even forced to go land elsewhere.

One tourist known missing , washed out to sea .
    No other fatalities known yet.
    Some severe resort damage.

The undersea cable is cut , and will take at least two weeks to repair ,
    if all goes well.
The nearest repair vessel is in Philippines , and will take three days preparation to leave , then to Samoa for other supplies , bore heading to look for the break in the cable.
Meantime , basically only a few satellite phones for communication.

No word yet when the Orion will be back.
A Hercules will be heading up tomorrow with aid.
Don't know if they can land or will have to drop it.

    Tongan population 107,500 , meanwhile
there are over 85,000 Tongans living in NZ.
Food and water are their immediate need , as everything is blanketed in ash and shattered rock pieces (the size of peas and beans and bigger) ,
    and contaminated.

The Orion arrived back this afternoon , but no word from them published yet

I guess they're busy briefing the Hercules crew who are loaded ready to fly first thing in the morning ,
as well as government and aid agencies
Also may be preparing to go back to drop aid to outlying islands , where they are capable of flying low n slow for small target drops.
The Orion can carry about 60,000lb payload.

The Tongan people are really worried about covid that have not had much contact with outside world.
What is needed is the RAAF C17 to airdrop suppys with the A330 tankers to refuel them so they can carry the most help without landing and return to base. The return of the ANZAC to help others

Our Hercules and Orion's do the job quite adequately , without need for refueling.
(and don't forget we work together with the Aussies , so there are both air forces in on the job)

Only problem is or would be if the ash cloud prevents flying into the area.
Both can either land or air drop.

Last I heard the ash cloud was being blown to the west , toward Aussie , so hopefully they can get in from the east.

    Update:

a spokesman for the NZ Defence Force confirmed this morning that that (the aid flight) is now delayed until tomorrow or Thursday
because of ash on the main runway of the island of Tongatapu.

An air drop option was considered,
    but was
"not the preference of the Tongan authorities,"
he told the Herald this morning.

    ***
On has to wonder why an air drop was declined ,
    under the circumstances.
Perhaps it's not so urgent after all.

    (note: we have 5 Hercules,
and a similar number of Orion , though not all are always in service obviously.

Why we have up to date long range Orion's:

Because its territory includes from the Kermadecs and Three Kings to the north, and Chatham Islands way out east , to the Auckland Islands way south ,
    and other outlying islands,
New Zealand’s area EEZ was the fourth-largest fishing zone in the world (4 million square kilometres).

    6298-enz (1).jpg
you can see it extends about two thirds of the way to Tonga
