Chris Wallace leaving Fox News after 18 years

Long-time "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace is leaving the network after nearly two decades to "try something new," he announced Sunday.

Why it matters: Known for his impartiality and tough interviews, Wallace was the bedrock of the network's hard news division, commanding respect from political leaders on both sides of the aisle, even at a time when cable news has become much more polarizing.

Driving the news: "I want to try something new, to go beyond politics to all the things I’m interested in," Wallace said. "I’m ready for a new adventure. And I hope you’ll check it out."

    • His program will be helmed by rotating news anchors until a permanent host is named, according to an email from a Fox News spokesperson.
Details: In a statement on his final show Sunday, Wallace said “It is the last time — and I say this with real sadness — we will meet like this."

    • "Eighteen years ago, the bosses here at Fox promised me they would never interfere with a guest I booked or a question I asked. And they kept that promise. I have been free to report to the best of my ability, to cover the stories I think are important, to hold our country’s leaders to account. It’s been a great ride."
    • "We’ve covered five presidential elections, interviewed every president since George H.W. Bush, travelled the world — sitting down with France’s Emanuel Macron and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. And I’ve gotten to spend Sunday mornings with you," he added."
"It may sound corny, but I feel we’ve built a community here. There’s a lot you can do on Sundays. The fact you’ve chosen to spend this hour with us is something I cherish."
In a statement, Fox News Media said, “We are extremely proud of our journalism and the stellar team that Chris Wallace was a part of for 18 years. The legacy of FOX News Sunday will continue with our star journalists, many of whom will rotate in the position until a permanent host is named.”

The big picture: Wallace marks the latest in a string of cable news host departures and shakeups in the past few weeks and months.

    • NBC News' Brian Williams signed off from his 11 p.m. program on MSNBC last week after 28 years with the network.
    • CNN's Chris Cuomo was terminated from the network last Saturday following new revelations from a legal review made by the company into Cuomo's involvement in the management of his brother's sexual harassment scandal, leaving CNN's 9 p.m. primetime spot open.
    • MSNBC's Rachel Maddow is expected to leave her daily program next year as she pursues different types of journalism endeavors with the network, which will leave MSNBC's 9 p.m. primetime spot open.

MSNBC panel questions what led to Chris Wallace's 'abrupt departure' from Fox News

    Chris Wallace (Fox News/screen grab)

An hour before CNN confirmed that longtime Fox News host Chris Wallace was coming to work at CNN+ after he surprised his fans with an unexpected goodbye announcement, the panel on MSNBC's "The Sunday Show" speculated why the host made what they called an "abrupt departure."

With the panel praising Wallace as an oasis of professionalism at a network more known for bomb-throwers like Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson, former Republican National Committee head Michael Steele suggested the host may have grown weary of working in such an atmosphere.

With host Jonathan Capehart expressing shock at the "abrupt departure" and later noting there were rumors just then floating about the CNN move, he prompted Steele with, "It's like folks say, 'I quit,' and it's literally their last day. No two weeks' notice. Talk about how -- I do think this is a seismic moment over at Fox News and, to a lesser extent, journalism, but why is it important to mark the fact that Chris Wallace is leaving?"

"I think it is because, by and large, Chris has been a port in the storm, if you will, in the political storms that we've engaged in," Steele began. "He has been that source of speaking truth to power, keeping the journalism honest to the best of his abilities. I would suspect that while the statement he made was true, that they, quote, 'didn't interfere with or let him book or ask questions the way' he wanted, that there was growing pressure on that and, you know, being the guy that he is, he wasn't having any of it. The abruptness of it."

"We watched our good friend Brian Williams step down this week after announcing over a month ago that this was his plan and so forth, and that's typically how that's done," Steele continued. If you want to compare and contrast how one leaves a network they've been associated with for 18 years, you get a sense of how you do it when Brian left. We woke up this morning and were like, 'excuse me, what?' It speaks to a lot about people with credibility inside the Republican Party and inside journalism having to deal with the sort of Trump faction going on -- I'm done."

It should be noted that Wallace, along with colleague Brett Baier expressed dismay to Fox News management about a January 6th documentary created my Carlson that attempted to make the case that the Capitol riot was a "false flag."

    Hahahaha -
    OH.
    NO!

So those 'hard news' (lol lol lol) idiots at MSNBC held a panel on it.
I'm sure they'll find it was Trump's fault.

What a bunch of moronic garbage. As usual.

‘Only janitor they had’: Fox News trashed after Chris Wallace abruptly announces he is out

Fox News personality Chris Wallace (screengrab).

"Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace announced on-air he's leaving the conservative cable channel after 18 years. The news came abruptly – MSNBC's Brian Williams' exit was announced a month in advance.

The Daily Beast reports the "Fox News Sunday moderator shockingly announced that this week’s episode of the political talk show would be his last, telling viewers it was with 'real sadness' that he was departing both the Sunday series and network."

Wallace isn't retiring, however, he "is exiting to 'try something new.' A source told The Daily Beast that new gig is with CNN’s streaming service."

Wallace is seen by many as the only legitimate journalist the far right wing network had left. Unlike most of the others, Wallace often challenged Republicans on their own lies.

Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple noted that Wallace "and Bret Baier had recently objected to the Tucker Carlson documentary 'Patriot Purge.'"

On social media reaction was quick.

No, Chris Wallace doesn't get points for being a human shield while working at the most treasonous, untruthful and hateful "News" channel in the history of the U.S. He sold his name and reputation so Fox News could spend every day making the country, the media & your life worse.

Fox News hosts knew Trump fans were behind MAGA riots -- but still lied and blamed Antifa: Mehdi Hassan

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) revealed during the Jan. 6 hearing vote on Monday that three Fox News personalities were hurriedly texting White House chief of staff Mark Meadows begging him to make President Donald Trump stop the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

On television that day and in the days that followed, however, those Fox hosts were saying something entirely different on air.

"I, for one, am shocked Fox News hosts were staying stuff in private different to what they say in public. Shocked," MSNBC's Mehdi Hasan said in reaction, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Media Matters president Angelo Carusone described it as a "big deal" for two major reasons.

"One, this is a stunning illustration, and it is rare to use the word stunning in relation to something Fox does but this is a stunning illustration of the Trump-Fox feedback because it shows in real-time on Jan. 6 they knew there was a problem," he explained. "They tried to protect and advise Trump to address that problem in real-time. Then after Jan. 6 they ran cover for him and, to this day, continued to rewrite history. The second reason is that we actually have their words that they were saying on air at the same time they were sending these messages."

Hasan showed a video collection of twisting the situation to make it seem that Democrats were acting hysterically. The attack wasn't actually that big of a deal, they claimed.

"What we just saw — it is gaslighting," said Hasan. "Now, thanks to the texts, we have clear evidence for that gaslighting."

Carusone agreed, noting that on Jan. 6, the same day Fox News hosts were sending the panicked text messages, they were telling their viewers that those attacking the Capitol weren't Trump supporters but Antifa and Black Lives Matter.

"Laura Ingraham called in," he recalled. "Sean Hannity did a show that night. Brian Kilmeade did the same thing. So, they recognized in real-time that this was actually Trump supporters and yet they spent an enormous amount of effort that very day lying, explicitly saying, and blaming this on Antifa and Black Lives Matter."

Hasan wondered if Hannity would dedicate his 9 p.m. hour to his role in the conversations with Meadows on Jan. 6 and come clean about what he was saying and thinking.

What a phony little dog and pony show. All this and Hannity never addressed his texts or answered any questions. And Rivera gets accused of disloyalty. to Dear Leader like its North Korea instead of the United States of America.

Fireworks erupt on Fox News after Geraldo blames Trump for inciting Capitol riots

Fireworks erupted on Fox News Tuesday night after Geraldo Rivera directly implicated former President Donald Trump of inciting riots at the United States Capitol building.

Host Sean Hannity began by asking Rivera why Congress was only investigating the Capitol riot and not the assorted riots that took place in response to the murder of George Floyd last year.

Rivera replied that those riots were not an attack on the American republic and system of government the way that this one was.

"This was a riot that was unleashed, incited, and inspired by the president of the United States, which targeted the heart of American democracy" Rivera charged.

Hannity tried to deflect blame by claiming that Trump had urged protesters to act "peacefully," without noting the fact that Trump for more than three hours refused to tell the rioters to leave the Capitol after the riots had begun.

Rivera responded by citing Hannity's own texts that he sent to Meadows during the riots asking Trump to put out a statement telling people to leave.

"I beg you, Sean, to remember the frame of mind you were in when you wrote that text on January 6," he said. And when Laura did. And when Brian did. And when Don Jr. did! Remember that concern you had. Remember the frustration you had at our beloved 45th president."

Guest Dan Bongino wasted no time in accusing Rivera of disloyalty.

"The backstabbing of the president you're engaging in is really disgusting!" he fumed.

The proof that treasonous conservative/Republicans are anti democratic is simply overwhelming. They already tried to overthrow the last election and install Trump as a dictator. They are passing voter suppression laws from coast to coast. They are gerrymandering to make sure minority white Republicans maintain control over the majority. And are installing treasonous conservative/Republicans as election officials so the next time they try to steal an election they get away with it.

Republicans are now the official party of treason against the United States of America.

Fox News Channel closes 2021 as most-watched cable network for sixth straight year
'I am incredibly proud of the unrivaled success we’ve had at Fox News Channel,” FOX News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said

Fox News Channel finished off its 25th anniversary year as the most-watched network across all of basic cable for the sixth-straight year.

Fox News, which launched on October 7, 1996, dominated all of basic cable in total day and primetime viewership to close the anniversary year with plenty to celebrate a quarter-century after Rupert Murdoch launched the network.

"As we embark on our 20th year as the leader in cable news, the last six of which as number one in all of cable, I am incredibly proud of the unrivaled success we’ve had at Fox News Channel," FOX News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said.

"Not only were we the only network to grow our audience share, but we did so while changing our lineup and transforming the entire late-night television landscape in the process, ensuring our continued momentum for many years to come," Scott said.

Fox News averaged 1.3 million viewers from the start of 2021 through December 13, while no other basic cable offering cracked the one-million viewer barrier.

MSNBC finished second with an average audience of 915,000 and CNN settled for third place with 783,000. ESPN and HGTV joined the cable news channels among the top five.

Fox News dominated the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m. ET, averaging 2.4 million viewers compared to 1.7 million for second-place ESPN. MSNBC averaged 1.5 million viewers to finish fourth, as CNN held off HGTV for the fourth spot by averaging 1.1 million primetime viewers. Fox News was the only cable network to finish with over two million viewers in primetime and one million in total day.

"Tucker Carlson Tonight" averaged 3.2 million viewers to finish as the most-watched show on cable news.

"The Five" averaged 2.9 million to finish second despite airing in the late afternoon, well before the primetime hours that historically attract a larger audience.

"Hannity" averaged 2.8 million viewers to finish third while MSNBC’s most-watched program was "The Rachel Maddow Show," which averaged 2.6 million viewers to finish fourth.

"The Ingraham Angle," "Special Report with Bret Baier," "Fox News Primetime" and "Gutfeld!" all finished among the 10 most-watched cable news options, too. Daytime programs "Outnumbered," "America’s Newsroom" and "The Faulkner Focus" finished in the top 15 after dominating their timeslots.

"Hannity" averaged 2.8 million viewers as Fox News was as the most-watched network across all of basic cable for the sixth-straight year.

"Gutfeld!," hosted by Greg Gutfeld, was launched in 2021 when Fox News joined the late-night space to great success. It swiftly became the second highest-rated program in late night television with an average audience of 1.7 million viewers, topping ABC’s "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," NBC’s "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon," ,Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show" and TBS’ "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" in the process.

Gutfeld, also a co-host on "The Five," was the first late night television host to outdraw CBS’ Stephen Colbert as the most-watched late night television host for an entire week since 2018. "Gutfeld!" ended up topping Colbert during several weeks of 2021.

CNN’s most-popular program was troublesome for multiple reasons. "Cuomo Prime Time" combined with its timeslot replacement, "CNN Tonight," averaged 1.3 million viewers to finish No. 25 among all cable news options. The liberal network’s 9 p.m. ET hour finished behind 13 Fox News shows and 11 MSNBC programs.

While the lack of viewership for CNN’s most popular show would raise eyebrows alone, its namesake host was fired in December after months of embarrassing the network.

"Gutfeld!" namesake Greg Gutfeld, also a co-host on "The Five," was the first late night television host to outdraw CBS’ Stephen Colbert as the most-watched late night television host for an entire week since 2018.

CNN was forced to fire Chris Cuomo after the New York Attorney General's office released documents from its sexual harassment investigation into ousted Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, revealing the anchor was far more involved in helping his disgraced brother than he publicly acknowledged.

Transcripts from his interview with investigators show the now-former CNN star admitting he would reach out to media sources to find out about new accusers who have yet to come forward publicly. The "Cuomo Prime Time" namesake was also caught up in a variety of other scandals and has been temporarily replaced by Michael Smerconish, but the show still managed to finish as the most popular program CNN had to offer in 2021.

As 2022 approaches, MSNBC’s most-watched host, Rachel Maddow, is expected to take a step back from her nightly duties in the coming months and CNN’s most-watched host is currently unemployed.

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham has now finished as the most-watched female cable news host among the key demo in back-to-back years. (Fox news)

Fox News also topped cable news options among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25-54, averaging 222,000 total viewers from the key category. The only basic cable offering to finish ahead of Fox News in the demo was NFL-heavy ESPN, while CNN averaged 189,000 demo viewers to finish fifth. MSNBC, which has struggled to attract young viewers in recent months, barely cracked the top ten with 127,000 average viewers.

During primetime, Fox News averaged 373,000 nightly viewers from the critical category compared to 274,000 for CNN and only 219,000 for MSNBC.

"Tucker" was the most-watched show among the demo with an average audience 536,000 viewers among the category most coveted by advertisers. "Hannity" averaged 462,000 to finish second, followed by "The Five," "The Ingraham Angle" and MSNBC’s "Maddow."

By topping Maddow, Fox News’ Laura Ingraham has now finished as the most-watched female cable news host among the demo in back-to-back years.

Fox News held a 44% share of the cable news audience in total day viewership and 41% of the demo audience. During primetime, Fox News held a 47% audience share in total viewers and 43% among the key demo, increasing its percentage of the demo audience since 2020 in the process.

Rupert Murdoch announced his vision for Fox News Channel a few months before it launched in 1996.

"FOX News @ Night with Shannon Bream," which moved to a new timeslot in 2021, improved the network’s timeslot’s ratings across the board. Fox News also unveiled a new daytime lineup on January 18, which increased the network’s daytime viewership by 12% among total viewers and 27% among the key demo.

"America’s Newsroom" with Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino averaged 1.5 million viewers, Harris Faulkner’s "The Faulkner Focus" averaged 1.5 million and Faulkner, Emily Compagno and Kayleigh McEnany’s "Outnumbered" averaged 1.6 million viewers, while "America Reports" with John Roberts and Sandra Smith, "The Story with Martha MacCallum" and "Your World with Neil Cavuto" all averaged 1.4 million to help Fox News crush cable news competition.

"FOX & Friends" was highest-rated morning program on cable, averaging 1.2 million total viewers and 211,000 in the demo. Meanwhile, CNN’s morning show option, "New Day," averaged only 529,000 viewers to finish as the No. 46 program on cable news.

Jonah Goldberg Reveals ‘Huge Share’ of Fox Pundits Are Dishonest About Their Trump Support: ‘I Didn’t Want to be Complicit in So Many Lies’

Former Fox News contributor Jonah Goldberg revealed in a scathing new op-ed that many pro-Trump hosts at Fox News are dishonest about their support for the former president.

Goldberg made headlines weeks ago when he and fellow Fox contributor Stephen Hayes left the network in protest of its post-election coverage and Patriot Purge, Tucker Carlson’s conspiracy-theory-riddled series on the storming of the U.S. Capitol. Fox News said after the resignations that it did not plan on renewing Hayes and Goldberg’s contracts.

“I felt conflicted about speaking freely,” Goldberg wrote in a new piece published by The Dispatch.

“Fox understandably doesn’t like to pay people who criticize Fox or its talent, and there is something unseemly about it,” he wrote. “That was one reason why I left. Another was that I didn’t want to be complicit in so many lies.”

Goldberg went on to say “I never deliberately lied on Fox,” but he felt like he was becoming complicit in “a series of lies of omission” at the network. He also spoke of how he was a first-hand witness to “dishonest” people at Fox who would cheer for Trump publicly, but would take a significantly different perspective in private.

I know that a huge share of the people you saw on TV praising Trump were being dishonest. I don’t merely suspect it, I know it, because they would say one thing to my face or in my presence and another thing when the cameras and microphones were flipped on. And even when I didn’t hear it directly, I was often one degree of separation from it.

The piece comes days after Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) publicly disclosed text messages from Fox News hosts who begged former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to have Trump call off his rioting supporters on Jan. 6.

The texts included one from Laura Ingraham, and Goldberg noted that while the Fox host clearly saw Trump as the reason for the violence that day, she never blamed him on her show:

The central truth of the texts isn’t that what the mob was doing was condemnable, but that Trump was responsible for the condemnable behavior. By the time the cameras went on, Laura was still willing to condemn the president’s mob, but not the president. And if you read the transcript, much of the show was dedicated to rationalizing the mob’s behavior, with various GOP congressmen changing the subject to the supposed real outrage of the stolen election.

“The president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home,” Ingraham wrote in her text to Meadows. “This is hurting all of us. He is destroying his legacy.”

In the months that followed, Ingraham did her best to downplay the violence. Goldberg wrote:

“No reasonable person thinks that what happened on January 6 was, as Biden said, the worst attack on the Capitol since the Civil War,” she said last July. “Come on, guys. Buffalo head guy was poised to take over the U.S. Government? Are you kidding me? We’ve had many protests, many riots in American history. We had many last year that were far worse than this.” When Capitol police testified before Congress, she dismissed it all by giving out “Best Performance” awards like they were all actors. And she said the police had “no one to blame but themselves” for letting the mob inside the perimeter.

That’s not what she was texting Mark Meadows.

May be true, but Tucker still admits he lies and that his show is entertainment, not news. That was they're defense in court!

Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News can move forward, a Delaware state judge ruled Thursday.

Law & Crime reports Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis wrote, “For purposes of the Motion, the Court must view all well-pled facts alleged in the Complaint as true and in a light most favorable to Dominion,” but added clearly, “If the plaintiff offers ‘some direct evidence’ that the statement ‘was probably false,’ the Court can infer that the defendant ‘inten[ded] to avoid the truth.’”

The far right wing cable network is being sued for giving “fictions a prominence they otherwise would never have achieved,” Dominion said in its lawsuit back in March, turning “a small flame…into a forest fire.”

“With Fox’s global platform,” Dominion’s 138-page lawsuit contents, “an audience of hundreds of millions, and the inevitable and extensive republication and dissemination of the falsehoods through social media, these lies deeply damaged Dominion’s once-thriving business.”

In a statement Fox News called the lawsuit an “all-out assault on the First Amendment.”
