I have no proof of this nor have found evidence of it YET. However, I heard at work, that intially the Govt. and Colonial Pipeline refused the ransom on the basis that "The US does not negotiate with terrorists" and Colonial was rebuilding their computer system, which really shouldn't be hard to do. What I also heard was that the same group who hacked the pipeline, had also hacked all the records of the capitol rioters, and threatened to release it all compromising all of the cases. The Govt. wanting to to make examples of the rioters, thereby capitulated and negotiated a ransom payment. If that is the case, somebody will dig into it, and it will be run the enire Biden presidency!

So now I've heard several stories that the Colonial Pipeline has paid 5 million dollars in ransom to the Ransomware crooks who attacked them.

I work (in a non-technical capacity) for an IT MSP (Managed Services Provider), and this is ridiculous. None of our clients are as big as Colonial, but it's not fucking rocket science. There certainly may be components of a complex network infrastructure that runs a pipeline that I may not have information on, but the steps to cure Ransomware attacks is, on its face, simple:

Shut down.
Wipe all affected computers and servers clean.
Recover and re-install all data that has been reliably backed up locally (but not connected to the working network) or in the cloud.

These people, like the City of Atlanta a couple of years ago, should have IT people that know this.

Your cure seems to make a lot of sense however it also seems a little simplistic, is it really that easy. I have absolutely no clue.

 

I'm not going to write 1,000 words about how it's done, but those are the steps. Our clients have been hit with Ransomware (there is no perfect protection against it - over 80% of Ransomware attacks are due to users falling for email 'Phishing' scams), and we have restored them to full network productivity in a matter of hours.

Many companies with in-house IT departments or people, for whom we provide 'back end' IT support, either did not have a reliable, bulletproof backup system and/or did not test the reliability of backup data retrieval on a regular (monthly) basis. I suspect this is where Colonial failed - it's all too common.

A driver in Florida has kindly provided the perfect cautionary tale for anyone thinking of buying up more gasoline than they need in the midst of this week’s Colonial Pipeline outage. According to WFLA, a Hummer driver’s vehicle erupted in flames on Wednesday after they filled up four canisters full of fuel. Citrus County Fire Rescue told the news outlet that firefighters who responded to the scene discovered four five-gallon containers full of gasoline in the back of the burnt-out Hummer. Fire officials reportedly said that one person was injured but, against advice, they refused to be checked out by a doctor. That wasn’t the only advice they ignored—Tampa Bay officials had told people to not panic buy fuel in the wake of the pipeline outage. Colonial Pipeline restarted operations Wednesday after an audacious ransomware attack forced it to shut down for six days.

Shooter got gas yesterday. He also took his 1 gallon gas can that he uses for his lawn mower to fill.
A busy body decided he knew better than Shooter, and started in about "panic buying of gas" and "where is your mask" and generally trying to be the boss of Shooter.

Shooter pointed out a: the ONE GALLON gas can is officially approved for the transport of gasoline. b: A mask is not required out of doors c: you are not the boss of Shooter, go back to your car before you get gas spilled on you.

This is all just a precursor to what we will face this summer. Gas shortages? You betcha. Also construction materials, computer chips, food, paper goods, all manner of things will be in short supply.

I gues the Carolinas were hit hard , New Jersey never skipped a beat but every oil refinery on the East Coast is , only 50 miles from everybody’s door in New Jersey , When you close oil refineries like President Obama did , you only screw the people who by gas and need gas .
