Sixteen Thirty Fund’s total 2020 fundraising came to nearly $390 million — a new record for the group, and nearly three times more than the approximately $140 million it raised in 2018 and 2019.

Half of the haul came from just four donors, who gave contributions of $86.2 million, $52.7 million (in the form of stock), $45.7 million and $45 million to Sixteen Thirty Fund.

“I’m struggling to think of any group I’ve ever come across that has a single contribution that large,” said Maguire, who noted that it could be from an individual or from another nonprofit or other group.

Tech billionaire Pierre Omidyar and his wife, Pam, disclosed earlier this year that they were responsible for the $45 million gift, which went to Civic Action Fund, a fiscally sponsored project of the Sixteen Thirty Fund.

Another four donors gave between $10 million and $20 million, and 27 more gave between $1 million and $5.3 million.

As a nonprofit, Sixteen Thirty Fund is not required to disclose its donors, even though it spends significant sums on politics. But in addition to Omidyar’s self-disclosure, the New York Times revealed earlier this year that Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss’ nonprofits gave more than $135 million to the Sixteen Thirty Fund in recent years, which was earmarked for non-electoral purposes. A person with Sixteen Thirty Fund, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that contributions from organizations funded by Wyss did not increase in 2020.

The Open Society Foundations, founded by liberal mega-donor George Soros, also lists nearly $17 million in 2020 grants to the Sixteen Thirty Fund on its website.

Sixteen Thirty Fund’s single biggest outlay in 2020 — $129 million — went to America Votes, the liberal umbrella group that works on voter registration and turnout and collaborates with other political groups across the left.

The massive windfall from Sixteen Thirty Fund in 2020 was, by itself, more than twice as much as America Votes raised the previous year. Like Sixteen Thirty Fund, and with its help, America Votes expanded dramatically in the last few years, raising approximately $13 million in its fiscal years ending in June 2017 and 2018 before bringing in $64 million the next year, according to its most recent tax documents.

Okay, that’s a joke (sort of), but It’s hard to imagine, given the news reported by the NY Post Wednesday—Manhattan DA to stop seeking prison sentences in slew of criminal cases—that more people will not be continuing the recent trend of decamping New York for Florida, Texas, Tennessee and a slew of other red states.

In fact, it is likely to increase. Property values hereabouts will sky rocket. Thank you, George.

Why am I thanking Soros? It should be obvious. The billionaire’s habit of opening his very deep pockets to elect “woke” district attorneys across the country has been remarkably successful. He, more than anyone, is personally responsible for the crime wave currently engulfing America with murder rates in our big cities the highest in decades.

That, as much as anything, is sending people out of the blue states on what is called in the country classic “Wagon Wheel,” “the Southbound Train.”

That the vast majority of those murders are black on black doesn’t seem to have deterred George (although he surely must know it because the statistics are widely available), nor does it appear to deter Alvin Bragg, the newly elected black Manhattan DA.

They—the mayor of Chicago, the DAs of Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore and many others—don’t seem to care about this. They apparently have other priorities. Like Black Lives Matter itself, they don’t seem to think black lives actually do matter. Power (theirs) is all that matters. And that they look good. (To whom, I wonder?)

The people who really do care about black lives are the people who are supposed to disdain them—the cops (many of whom are themselves black).

According to the Post, one high-ranking policeman said of Bragg’s new dictum that his office “will not seek a carceral sentence” except for homicides and a “handful” of other felonies, “It will lead to more young lives lost to gang violence and innocent people being hurt both physically and emotionally.”

Another added: “This is outrageous. He was elected to enforce the law. If he wanted to change them, he should have run for a state office.”

True enough, but as some woman once said of another crime that was never punished, “What difference does it make?” The police have been leaving New York too. More will now.

Bad, even horrific, as that is, we do have something to thank George Soros for that is considerably more important than whatever jokes we want to make about red state property values.


More than anyone—with the possible exception of the current resident of the White House—George Soros will be responsible for a sweeping Republican victory in 2022 and possibly 2024.

 

Manhattan’s Soros-Backed DA Won’t Seek Life for Cop Killers, Terrorists
Alvin Bragg tells prosecutors incarceration is 'a matter of last resort'

Manhattan's newly installed, George Soros-backed district attorney this week ordered prosecutors not to seek life without parole sentences for murderers, terrorists, and cop killers.

Alvin Bragg issued a memo on Jan. 3 that forbade staff from seeking life without parole sentences and broadly discouraged them from seeking sentences beyond 20 years. A $1 million contribution from Soros helped Bragg secure a narrow 4-point victory last June in the Democratic primary.

"My commitment to making incarceration a matter of last resort is immutable," Bragg's memo reads.

Bragg's election is the biggest victory yet for Soros and his Justice and Public Safety PAC, which has helped elect soft-on-crime candidates in Chicago, Philadelphia, and suburban Washington, D.C. Manhattan is uniquely visible as the economic and media capital of the nation, meaning Bragg's new approach—and Soros's criminal justice philosophy—will attract attention nationally and around the world.

Crimes that qualify for life without parole sentences in New York state penal law include first-degree murder, terrorism, criminal possession of chemical and biological weapons, assassination of police officers, and molesting and murdering a child.

Defendants in those cases would likely serve prison terms in the range of 20 years or less, if Bragg's office pursues incarceration at all. Under the new policy, the maximum sentence Manhattan prosecutors are advised to seek in cases that can't be reviewed by a parole board is 20 years. There is a carveout for "exceptional circumstances," which are not defined in the memo.

The memo leaves open the possibility that murderers or violent assailants otherwise eligible for life without parole could qualify for early release, provided the victim or a victim's loved one goes along.

"In exceptionally serious cases such as homicides where lengthy periods of incarceration are justified, ADAs shall consider the use of restorative justice as a mitigating factor in determining the length of the sentence, only when victims or their loved ones consent," the memo reads.

There are between 200 and 300 individuals serving life without parole sentences in New York as of this writing. Another 10,000 are serving life terms but are eligible for release in the future. Among them is David Berkowitz, the notorious "Son of Sam" serial killer who was sentenced to six life sentences for a string of shootings in New York City between 1976 and 1977. Another is Mark David Chapman, who murdered John Lennon in 1980 and is eligible for parole. He was prosecuted by Bragg's office.

Critics like Bragg say such sentences are the functional equivalent of capital punishment, calling it "death by incarceration."

About half of states have banned life without parole sentences outright for juveniles, and a series of Supreme Court decisions have narrowed the range of minor defendants who qualify.

The Manhattan prosecutor's office is one for long tenures. Just three individuals, Democrats all, have served as district attorney in an official capacity since 1942.

The office is also politically salient because of its jurisdiction. Bragg's predecessor Cyrus Vance led a sweeping investigation into the Trump Organization's financial practices that reached the Supreme Court. Robert Morgenthau, Manhattan's DA from 1975 to 2010, was a legend in legal circles and mentor to numerous prominent lawyers, including Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor.

US Attorney Flaks for Embattled Soros DA Hours After Taking Office
Rachael Rollins stumped for George Gascón amid recall effort

Rachael Rollins, the newly minted U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, joined embattled Los Angeles County district attorney George Gascón (D.) at a press conference Wednesday afternoon amid a renewed push to remove him from office.

Gascón, who was elected with the help of a $2 million contribution from liberal moneyman George Soros, is facing a recall effort just one year into his tenure amid a spike in violent crime. Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.), who led the opposition to Rollins's confirmation, criticized her for politicking on the west coast the day she became the top federal prosecutor in Massachusetts.

"Rachael Rollins decided a long time ago that her politics were more important than keeping Americans safe from criminals," Cotton told the Washington Free Beacon. "It's no surprise to see her promoting another soft-on-crime district attorney backed by George Soros instead of doing her duty."

For recall organizers, Wednesday's event was a reminder that Gascón commands support from a sprawling national network that fiercely defends its allies. Organizers also saw the press conference as further proof that the DA is elevating left-wing criminal justice causes over workaday office business. Los Angeles is reeling from a string of smash-and-grab robberies at major retailers and soaring gun violence.

"To ‘celebrate' his first year in office, George Gascón stood with none of his prosecutors, no victims, no local law enforcement, no local elected officials, and no families, instead choosing out-of-state George Soros funded DAs who have no connection to LA. Think about that," said Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami, a Los Angeles prosecutor who has been a fierce Gascón critic.


Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department data show that since 2019 car thefts are up 53 percent. The city surpassed last year's number of murders, 355, at the end of November.


In recent weeks, an 81-year-old woman was murdered by armed intruders at her Beverly Hills home and a 13-year-old boy was killed in broad daylight in the streets near his elementary school.


Gascón took questions for almost 90 minutes, many of which touched on the nascent recall effort. He had sharp words for one of his most pointed critics, Los Angeles County sheriff Alex Villanueva (D.).


"My dad used to say that when you wrestle with a pig, you both get muddy and the pig likes it," Gascón said. He later walked back the remark.


Gascón and Rollins were joined on stage by Soros-funded DAs from around the country, including Chicago's Kimberly Foxx (D.). Other Soros acolytes issued statements of solidarity with Gascón.


"I am proud to stand alongside District Attorney Gascón, who is implementing smart, evidence-based policies that will deliver safer, healthier communities in Los Angeles. It is the same thing I am doing in Arlington County, Va., and that reform-minded prosecutors are doing in every corner of the country," said Parisa Dehghani-Tafti (D.), who was elected commonwealth's attorney for Arlington County, Va., with the help of a six-figure donation from Soros's Justice and Public Safety PAC.

Gascón practically ended pre-trial detention for criminal defendants. He abolished cash bail and issued a directive that in all cases requires a presumption in favor of pre-trial release. He also set internal guidelines designed to avoid charging crimes that trigger mandatory sentence enhancements. Gascón in March forbade prosecutors from seeking the death penalty for two accused child killers.

GOP States Are Pushing for Stricter Penalties for Protesters

Last year, all around the country, people took to the streets in an unprecedented uprising for racial justice. After the police killing of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement reignited in all 50 states.

And we also saw brutal crackdowns by the police on protesters. In just the first few days of demonstrations, police around the U.S. arrested more than 10,000 protesters. Many arrests were for violating curfews and failing to disperse.

And this year, more people are beginning to take to the streets to protest the continued barrage of police killings. But as demonstrations continue in the U.S., some lawmakers around the country are looking at stricter legal penalties for protesting. Oklahoma and Iowa recently passed laws that grant immunity to people who strike protesters with their cars. And in Florida last week, Governor Rick De Santis signed legislation to create harsher penalties for existing public disorder laws.

On Saturday, January 15th, just hours after Miyares and Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin were sworn into office, Miyares released a statement explaining why he has launched an investigation into the commonwealth’s parole board as well as Loudoun County Public Schools. He wrote:

“One of the reasons Virginians get so fed up with government is the lack of transparency and that’s a big issue here.

The Virginia Parole Board broke the law when they let our murderers, rapists, and cop killers early on their sentences without notifying the victims.

Loudoun County Public Schools covered up a sexual assault on school grounds for political gain, leading to an additional assault of a young girl.”

He added:

“It’s unconscionable that you had some victims that found out their loved one’s killer has been released by this parole board by sometimes just hearing about it on the nightly news.”

In addition to the investigations, Miyares fired 30 staff members, 17 of them attorneys. Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas tweeted that Miyares fired the “entire” civil rights division, which Miyares’ office confirmed is not accurate. Miyares’ spokeswoman Victoria LaCivita said in a statement:

“This is incorrect information. There are 12 individuals who work in the Office of Civil Rights – only two personnel changes were made.”

She added:

“During the campaign, it was made clear that now Attorney General-elect Miyares and Attorney General Herring have very different visions for the office. We are restructuring the office, as every incoming AG has done in the past.”

Richmond.com reported that while it is routine for lawyers to be replaced when one political party loses control, the number of lawyers fired surprised the outgoing Herring administration.

Herring spokesperson Charlotte Gomer said via email:

“These are dedicated and professional public servants who do important work, like investigate wrongful convictions, protect Virginians’ civil rights, help to ensure free and fair elections, and prevent human trafficking and opioid abuse.

Their absence will be a significant loss to the mission of the Office of Attorney General.”

Virginia Commonwealth's attorneys frequently let criminals walk

After a registered sex offender was arrested twice in three days on felony charges in Northern Virginia, local leaders are wondering what it takes to land a criminal behind bars when lenient prosecutors backed by George Soros are administering justice.

The serial CVS bandit, Karim Clayton, 44, has a seedy criminal history ranging from menacing a CVS employee with a knife to leading police on a high-speed chase on a major regional thoroughfare.

But Fairfax County prosecutor Steve Descano and Arlington County prosecutor Parisa Dehghani-Tafti—who cruised to victory with six-figure donations from Soros—have brought charges against Clayton at least a dozen times between them, only to abandon their cases or plead him out on paltry misdemeanors with almost no jail time.

"Radical leftist prosecutors like Steve Descano and Parisa Dehghani-Tafti do not represent the public or crime victims," said Sean Kennedy, president of Virginians for Safe Communities. "Their allegiances lie with criminal defendants first, last, and always."

A two-year-long spike in violent crime is a political hazard for President Joe Biden and Democrats. Virginia governor-elect Glenn Youngkin (R.) hammered a public safety message throughout his campaign, promising to fully fund law enforcement and fire an inmate-friendly state parole board. Republican candidates in the commonwealth are homing in on a similar strategy ahead of next year's midterm elections.

Thus far, Clayton’s twin arrests in the last week of September have netted him only three months in prison. He was arrested for assault and battery on Sunday, Sept. 26, in Fairfax County and released on bail Monday morning, according to Virginia court records. That case has not yet been resolved. Authorities arrested Clayton the very next day in Arlington County for stealing from a CVS.
