Actually there are multiple examples of Republicans finally trying to stand up or distance themselves from Trump. In fact it looks like right now they are going to go against Trump on the new stimulus package and just make him suck on it. Moscow Mitch and his cohorts know that if they refuse to help the American people they will be out of a job come January.

‘Republican rats are slowly abandoning ship’ as Trump looks doomed in November: conservative

In his column for the Daily Beast, conservative and Never-Trumper Matt Lewis explained that GOP lawmakers are seeing the writing on the wall and are doing all they can to put distance between themselves and Donald Trump as his re-election prospects sink.

Calling them “Republican rats” who are “slowly abandoning” the ship, the conservative columnist said that GOP lawmakers are looking at their own internal polls which indicate there is no advantage in sticking with the president as his bungling of the COVID-19 pandemic has sent his approval numbers into the tank.

“These Republicans (who have their own pollsters) have demonstrated that they will go whichever way the wind is blowing. And it is now clear that Trump is running against the wind,” Lewis wrote before noting Republican Senator Ben Sasse (NE) took an open slap at the White House this past week, telling the New York Times, “I want the whole White House to start acting like a team on a mission to tackle a real problem.”

As Lewis notes, Republicans aren’t in full-fledged retreat from Trump but the cracks are beginning to show, with the columnist writing, “What we are starting to see, however, is some distancing (and not just the social kind) on the issue that will probably define (and doom!) Trump’s presidency. Some independence. Some daylight between Republicans and their president. ”

Having said that, Lewis lamented that Republicans who may be ousted along with Trump might be the more moderate members, leaving what is left of the Republican Party in the hands of “Trumpist” idealogues like Sens. Tom Cotton (AR) and Josh Hawley (MO).

“If Trumpism is a cancer in the Republican Party (the theory goes), then you must root it out completely before it metastasizes. The problem is that most of these Republicans aren’t Trumpists—they’re opportunists. Their behavior was based on a rational conclusion that their voting base wanted them to support their president,” he explained. “If George W. Bush were president, they’d never stop talking about the importance of ‘compassionate conservatism.’ Destroying them reminds me of the line about having to destroy the village to save it.”

Writing, “Just how low should de-Trumpification go? In my opinion, it would be nice to have a check-and-balance on the potential excesses of the next regime. Just because you hate Trump doesn’t mean you have to reverse engineer your entire belief system,” Lewis admitted before expressing hope that a more level-headed Republican Party might rise from the ashes.

Democrats are now favored to take back the Senate — it could be ‘a perfect tsunami’: Cook Political Report

Democrats have not held control of the United States Senate since losing in the 2014 election, but are on pace to regain the majority in November according to a new analysis by the Cook Political Report.

“With just over 100 days until Election Day, the political climate appears dire for Republicans across the board. President Trump is the decided underdog against former Vice President Joe Biden in our Electoral College ratings and Democrats could end up expanding their House majority,” Jessica Taylor wrote.

“That leaves the Senate as Republicans’ firewall—the final barrier to unified control for Democrats in 2021. While GOP incumbents are trying to run races independent of the president, if Trump’s polling numbers remain this dismal come November, that’s an unenviable and likely unsuccessful strategy, according to several top party strategists. As of now, Democrats are a slight favorite to win the Senate majority,” the report explained.

“We wrote four months ago that the worsening pandemic, along with Biden emerging as the Democratic nominee instead of Bernie Sanders, was the “perfect storm” Republicans feared. Now, with the death toll nearing 150,000, the environment has gotten even worse for the GOP, prodded along by Trump’s missteps. Racial injustice protests y after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in early June further galvanized the nation, leading to rapid cultural shifts against Confederate monuments and even the long pushed for change of the Mississippi state flag, which still bore the Confederate battle flag emblem.

Taken together, that’s not just a perfect storm for Democrats, but perhaps a perfect tsunami.”

The group changed its ratings in five key races.

In Arizona, interim Republican Sen. Martha McSally’s reelection campaign went from toss-up to leaning Democrat. McSally is being challenged by former astronaut Mark Kelly.

In Iowa, Republican Sen. Joni Ernst’s campaign had been rating as leaning Republican, but is now considered a toss-up. Ernst is being challenged by Theresa Greenfield.

In Georgia, Republican Sen. David Perdue’s chances had been rated as leaning Republican, but is now considered a toss-up.

Polling shows Trump’s secret police in Portland—and GOP lawmaker complicity—could have 2020 consequences

MoveOn says voters are “fed up” with GOP senators from the battleground states of Arizona, Maine, and North Carolina “carrying water for him as he trundles toward authoritarianism.”

President Donald Trump’s brutal ongoing crackdown on protests in Portland, Oregon and his threats to send federal agents into other major U.S. cities in the coming days could have electoral consequences for not only Trump but also vulnerable Republican senators in key battleground states who are up for re-election this November, according to polling released Friday by MoveOn Political Action.

Public Policy Polling (PPP) this week surveyed registered voters in Arizona, Maine, and North Carolina, and found that majorities in all three states oppose Trump’s deployment of federal agents in Portland. Some critics have charged the president’s tactics are part of a ploy to sow chaos across the country in an effort to “steal” the election in November, when he is expected to face off against former Vice President Joe Biden. Voters also want Congress to intervene.

Although many Democratic members of Congress this week have condemned Trump’s actions in Portland and his promises to deploy agents elsewhere in the country, congressional lawmakers have so far failed to take any meaningful action and few Republicans have voiced any opposition.

PPP’s polling also showed that three GOP senators facing re-election—Martha McSally of Arizona, Susan Collins of Maine, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina—are all trailing their Democratic challengers.

“These results show that Trump’s plan to use unidentified federal agents to suppress local protests is backfiring with the public. Voters oppose it, and they want their senators to act,” Rahna Epting, MoveOn Political Action’s executive director, said in a statement Friday. “Continued enabling of Trump by Senators McSally, Collins, and Tillis is likely to hurt them at the ballot box.”

Epting added that “in this case, their political interests are aligned with the public interest, and they should do the right thing and join efforts in Congress to limit these abuses. When are they going to stand up to Trump’s continued abuses of power? Voters have had enough.”

We’ve watched in horror as Trump’s agents have used violence without accountability or transparency in Portland. Many have seen this same abuse from CPB agents on the border for a long time. This is a deeply dangerous jolt against democracy and for a strongman state.

Democrat Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut and co-founder of a nonprofit that advocates for stricter gun laws, now leads McSally by nine points, according to PPP. The pollsters also found that Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives Sara Gideon leads Collins by five points and former North Carolina state Sen. Cal Cunningham leads Tillis by eight points.

In Arizona, nearly two-thirds of voters say they are following the situation in Portland closely; 52% of all respondents in the state oppose the use of unidentified federal agents to suppress local protests and 51% support Congress acting to stop it. Additionally, 55% back specific actions in a bill (S. 4220) introduced this week by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) that would restrict the use of federal officers to respond to protests.

Nearly two-thirds of Mainers are also paying close attention to Portland, and 56% of voters in the state both oppose Trump’s use of federal agents in the Oregon city and want lawmakers to stop it. Even more Maine voters (58%) support elements of Merkley’s legislation.

More than two-thirds of North Carolina voters are monitoring the federal crackdown in the Pacific Northwest. A majority of respondents (54%) say they oppose the agents suppressing protests there and 52% want Congress to end it. Even more (61%) say they support key parts of S. 4220.

MoveOn pointed out on Twitter Friday that of the 42 current co-sponsors of Merkley’s bill, Collins, McSally, and Tillis are all missing. In fact, none of the Republican lawmakers in the GOP-controlled upper chamber—which adjorned for the weekend—have signed on to the legislation.

The advocacy group called the bill “a start” and urged Congress to go even further, investigating “this abuse of Trump’s power.”

That bill would be a start. We need Congress to investigate this abuse of Trump’s power (just as the DOJ’s Inspector General is). Members of Congress and local electeds should personally go monitor feds for use of violence on their constituents.

The blue wave keeps growing

With 102 days until Election Day, the blue wave threatening to swamp President Trump's re-election chances keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Why it matters: We all know that anything can happen. But right now, every measurable trend is going against Trump — and with each day that passes, it gets increasingly harder for him to claw his way back.

The Cook Political Report on Friday flipped Florida from "toss-up" to "leans Democratic," with national editor Amy Walter citing the state's spiraling coronavirus outbreak.

That follows a Quinnipiac poll on Thursday that showed Joe Biden leading by 13 points in the Sunshine State. For context, Trump led Hillary Clinton by 3 points in the same poll in mid-July 2016.

The tsunami flows down-ballot: Charlie Cook and his team now like Democrats' chances to reclaim the Senate, with Cook's Senate editor Jessica Taylor shifting races in Arizona, Georgia and Iowa in their favor this week.

Cook also moved 20 House races toward Democrats.

Dave Wasserman, its House editor, said he couldn't recall a similarly sized shift for one party.

The big picture: Trump's net approval rating (-15) has remained remarkably consistent throughout his presidency, highlighting the difficulty he faces in trying to quickly turn around public opinion.

CNN's Harry Enten noted morning that, since 1940, incumbent presidents who were re-elected had an average net approval rating of +23.

Those who lost had an average net approval rating of -14.

The bottom line: The pandemic isn't going anywhere. And no matter what the president wants, it's going to define everything from here on out.

102 days ago, the U.S. had 860,000 confirmed coronavirus cases (now 4 million), and Trump claimed "total" authority over ordering states to reopen.

Cash-strapped House Republicans furious with Jared Kushner for blocking RNC help: report

According to a report from the Washington Post, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been pleading for money from the Republican National Committee to help bolster the struggling campaigns of some of his colleagues in the House — only to be ignored.

Following the “Blue wave” 2018 midterm election that resulted in the Republican Party losing control of the House, McCarthy has been attempting to stop the bleeding in 2020 in what is expected to be a high-turnout election with an embattled Donald Trump at the top of the ticket.

The report notes that McCarthy has asked the RNC which is flush with cash for a check for the National Republican Congressional Committee multiple times, only to be given a cold shoulder as the RNC focuses on keeping Trump in office.

The roadblock for the frustrated McCarthy reportedly is Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

“McCarthy specifically has asked Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, to make a financial commitment to the House GOP, according to several officials familiar with the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely describe private conversations,” the report states. “But Kushner, who oversees such decisions and has a greater say than RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, has refused thus far, the officials say. While the Trump campaign and the RNC have brought in record amounts of money, some Trump officials see donating to the House as a wasteful investment as the GOP’s chances of reclaiming the majority sharply deteriorate.”

According to one White House insider, Trump and his advisors regard the House as a lost cause unable to overcome their minority status and are hoarding the money to salvage the president’s re-election.

“The campaign just wants the money. . . . They don’t care about the House — it’s not their concern,” the official stated. “When you’ve been working in politics for years, and you understand it’s a team sport, you kind of look at these things a little differently. I don’t think they see it that way.”

According to the report, House Republicans are furious with Kushner, “many of whom believe the president has a duty to help the party — not just himself,” particularly because some Republican House members in safe seats have forwarded donations in the tens of thousands of dollars to the RNC at the request of the president’s campaign officials.

Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Republicans have only themselves to blame.

“Washington Republicans have learned the hard way that encouraging people to drink bleach doesn’t make for the most effective fundraising pitch,” she said before adding, “House Democrats have outworked, out-hustled and outraised Republicans all cycle long. Our fundraising advantage is the firewall protecting our majority.”

It cracks me up to see PR hacks and Trump supporters like @shootersa try to condemn news reports with anonymous sources when often times the stuff they post not only have unnamed sources many times I can check them out and prove they are just flat out lying. Especially since two things have proven true about Trump and his administration. They, and in particular the White House, have more leaks than any administration in history. The number of people in the White House and administration willing to leak to the press is nothing short of phenomenal. And second, those leaks over time have proven remarkably accurate. And that is often in the face of emphatic denials from Trump and the White House communications that are later shown to be nothing more than blatant lies.

But now back on topic. There is nothing the GOP will not stoop to in order to try and win an election. And most often they are just laughably bad at trying to lie about it.

GOP Senator Removes Facebook Ad Showing Jewish Rival With Bigger Nose: Report

Sen. David Perdue (GA-R) has removed a Facebook ad aimed at his Jewish challenger, Jon Ossoff, featuring an image that appeared to have been doctored to make his nose look larger, The Forward reports. The ad includes photos of both the Senate hopeful and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and urges potential donors to “fight back” as “Democrats are trying to buy Georgia.” The newspaper analyzed the ad with the help of three experts and found that Ossoff’s nose in the 2017 Reuters image used in the ad had been both widened and lengthened.

Perdue’s campaign said in a statement that the alteration was *an accident. “In the graphic design process handled by an outside vendor, the photo was resized and a filter was applied, which appears to have caused an unintentional error that distorted the image,” a campaign spokesperson said. “Obviously, this was accidental, but to ensure there is absolutely no confusion, we have immediately removed the image from Facebook. Anybody who implies that this was anything other than an inadvertent error is intentionally misrepresenting Senator **Perdue’s strong and consistent record of standing firmly against anti-Semitism and all forms of hate.”

*Anyone who has worked with graphic arts especially resizing and filtering photos automatically knows that's a fucking lie because if the image was distorted the entire image would be distorted not just the nose. The only way to distort one element of a photo without distorting the entire image is to do it deliberately.
