My God its terrifying how true this is. They all knew. From the treasonous conservative/Republicans in Congress to even Trump's campaign. They all knew Trump is literally and clinically mentally ill, dangerous, and courting insurrection and an attempted coup over his Big Lie and said and did nothing to save the country and our democracy from him. One man stood between Trump and dictatorship.

Bob Woodward and Robert Costa joined Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night to discuss their latest explosive book, Peril, which details the final days of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Of the more shocking revelations in the book was the claim that Gen. Mark Milley grew so worried about Trump’s stability during his last days in office, that he took steps to make sure the former president could not launch any nuclear weapons.

While on The Late Show, Woodward stood by his reporting, confirming to Colbert that they record every interview and have proof of all quotations included in Peril.

Woodward admitted that while they did a deep background check on every claim, there were certainly people who came forward with information in an attempt to rehabilitate their reputation following their days on the Trump team.

“The one courageous person who did something was general Milley,” Woodward added of his sources. “There is a scene in the book, which took our breaths away, I think. When Nancy Pelosi called — Speaker of the House, second in line for the presidency — calls General Milley, and we have a transcript of it.”

Pelosi allegedly called Trump “dangerously crazy,” questioning Milley on how they could control nuclear weapons with him in office. Milley replied by confirming that there are procedures in place.

“And then after the call, Milley thinks, you know, she’s right. We better worry about Trump, and so he calls in the colonels and one-star generals and admirals into his office from the war room in the Pentagon,” he added. “And not just nuclear, but any military action. And he says, ‘All right, we have these procedures — don’t take a call from the president without me being involved. Do you understand that?'”

Woodward went on to say that Milley was not seizing power but instead ensuring that he would be in the room saying, “No!” if there was a threat to America or against American interest.

Woodward Defends Milley After Scrutiny at Hearing: People Accusing Him of Treason ‘Are Going to Owe the General an Apology’

General Mark Milley faced a number of questions about his Trump administration actions during Tuesday’s Senate hearing on Afghanistan.

To briefly recap, Bob Woodward and Robert Costa wrote in Peril that Milley was worried then-President Donald Trump’s actions could start war with China, so he called his Chinese counterpart to assure the U.S. would not attack.

Per the Washington Post, Milley said, “I want to assure you that the American government is stable and everything is going to be okay,” and he reportedly “pledge[d] he would alert his counterpart in the event of a U.S. attack.”

Milley defended his calls as “routine” and said they were meant to offer reassurances “in order to ensure strategic stability.”

Some Republican senators grilled and excoriated Milley over those calls during Tuesday’s hearing.

After the hearing, Woodward appeared on CNN with Jake Tapper and defended Milley’s actions.

Tapper asked asked Woodward, “From your reporting, how close was the U.S. to some kind of military conflict?”

“Milley’s whole point in this is that miscommunication is the seed of war,” Woodward responded.

He noted what Milley confirmed on the record during the hearing, and highlighted what Milley said about not being qualified to assess the president’s mental health.

Tapper asked if “something might have happened” if Milley had not made the call to China.

“Milley felt that’s the case,” Woodward responded.

He reiterated that the reporting he and Costa did found no evidence Milley did “anything other than what he felt in a crisis moment was ‘I’m going to do the maximum amount to protect the United States.'”

Woodward even made a point of saying, “When this is all washed out, those who are saying that General Milley actually was treasonous in what he did I think are going to owe the general an apology.”

I saw one Woodward interview where he commented on China getting nervous over Trump blaming covid on them. It apparently was causing a lot of internal pressure over in China for a response. Milley was only trying to assuage that tension.

And there is a hidden one. Probably all foreign countries but especially Russia China and Iran did their own psychological profiles of Trump and knew what our mental health experts knew. Trump was literally and clinically mentally ill and the most dangerous man in the world. So yeas China was on hair trigger and Milley needed to talk them down,

Bob Woodward knocks down GOP claims of 'treason' against Trump in presidency's final days

    MSNBC

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and other Republican senators suggested that Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley undermined former president Donald Trump in his final days on the job, but two reporters who revealed some of his actions knocked down those conspiracy theories.

Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa reported that Milley spoke with his Chinese counterpart to ease tensions and avoid possible military conflict over mistaken intelligence reports about U.S. aggression, and they told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that GOP senators were wrong to suggest other administration officials were kept out of the loop.

"They're on a hair trigger with China, as we know, there are all these exercises around Taiwan, around the, in the South China Sea," Woodward said. "It's definitely true, and it's consistent with our reporting in the book. The idea is to avoid war, to de-conflict. If you put yourself in Milley's shoes here, four days before the election, Oct. 30, they get intelligence that China thinks we're going to attack them. This is the worst environment for a military man -- 'oh, my god, they think we're going to attack them.'"

"You might get a Pearl Harbor where somebody will take the first move advantage, as they call it, so he's trying to close this down," he added. "This is a crisis moment, this is a practical time when he has to talk to Li [Zuocheng] and say, 'No, no, no, this is in the a situation where we are going to attack,' like they had in their five-year relationship, they're always talking back and forth. I accept, and Bob Costa does, that this is exactly as it is described. But it was a national security crisis."

Milley told lawmakers that he notified then-Defense Secretary Mike Esper and then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the talks, which were widely known across the Trump administration, and Costa knocked down claims by some Republicans that the general's actions were "treasonous."

"It's so important, whether you're a House Republican today or a House Democrat, to read the whole book," Costa said. "The context is there in the book, to not cherry-pick a paragraph and say, 'Well, that defines the entire story.' No, the book is the entire story of a dangerous transition. In particular, page 129 of the book details the whole conversation on Oct. 30. That whole conversation shows, based on our reporting, chairman Milley telling Gen. Li that you need to calm down. It's not some kind of tip-off about an attack. He's saying in historic context, you'll always see some escalation. There will be communication, as Bob Woodward just said. There has been a five-year relationship between Milley and Li, there is a level of trust there. He wanted to reemphasize that, to bring back the tensions, to avoid being on the brink of war."

"Our book also shows, as chairman Milley testified under oath, that he was reading other people in," Costa added. "In the prologue and throughout the book, you see Milley talking to other officials. We detail his conversations with the head of the NSA, paul Nakasone. We see him talking to [then-CIA director] Gina Haskell about the China calls. He talks to the Joint Chiefs of Staff about the China calls. It's a dangerous story of a transition in total turmoil, the Milley component is part of it. That's what we're trying to really give readers a portrait of."

Both CNN and MSNBC cut away from live coverage of the hearing because it was just too much of a slaughter for treasonous conservative/Republicans. Milley, Austin, and McKinney used yesterday's Senate hearing as a learning and strategy session to know where they treasonous conservative/Republicans in the House would be headed today. So they changed their opening statements to cut them off at the knees and the Democrats use everything they try to claim against them.

Another Republican attempted to twist the story of Gen. Mark Milley's conversation with Chinese military officials to be some kind of corrupt or illegal action during a hearing about Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Rep. Michael Turner (R-OH) attacked Milley for allegedly going rogue and calling the Chinese when there was no reason to. Instead of directing his question at Milley, however, Turner directed it to Sec. Lloyd Austin.

"With indignation in front of the House and the Senate, you have commented on the statements in the press concerning your phone conversation with your counterparts, Gen. Lee in China," said Turner. "Let's be clear, to give you some help with the indignation, those comments were in the press, because that's where you put them. Now, you claim that you had information, and it's all over, that China was worried about an imminent attack. You did not tell the president, the vice president, the White House chief of staff, the national security adviser, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State, the director of national intelligence either of the relevant committees in the House, including the Big 8, which you know include intel."

The committee chairman suspended the rules to allow Milley to answer the attacks, noting that Milley addressed the issue on Tuesday, explaining that the new book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa didn't include the full story much less the classified information that Milley was privy to.

"With respect to the intelligence, I have it right here. I'll be happy to share it with you," Milley began. "I guarantee that that intelligence was disseminated to the in the president's [presidential daily briefing], the vice president, the DNI, director of CIA, the Secretary of Defense, the assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, and others. That was significant and there was a lot of it. It wasn't just a singular report. There was a lot -- I'll be happy to share that with you and go over it with you line by line."

Milley then explained that given all of those people knew that there was a concern by China that the U.S. was going to wage a war with them, it was then concluded that he work with his counterpart to reassure China. There were eight people on the call between Gen. Milley and his counterpart in China.

"It was significant and concerning to the point where the secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Adm. David Skponson and myself and others had conversations about it," said Milley. "And I was directed by then-Secretary of Defense Esper. First, he directed his assistant secretary of Defense for Asia Pacific Affairs to make calls and then me. Same thing. This is all done with oversight and I try to lay that out in the memorandum. I tried to lay it out in a timeline in an unclassified way that you can use."

WATCH: GOP congressman lashes out at Biden after Milley deflates his outrage over Pelosi call

Tennessee Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais tried to put words in Gen. Milley's mouth during the House hearing on Afghanistan involving the account from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa's new book "Peril."

DesJarlais cited Sen. Marsha Blackburn's (R-TN) questions Tuesday about the conversations Gen. Milley had for the book. He cited the conversation Milley had with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is cited asking if anyone was doing anything at the White House other than "kissing Trump's fat butt."

"I haven't seen the transcript," said Milley.

"Well, I think that would be firmly imprinted on my mind," said DesJarlais.

"I would just say there was a lot of disparaging comments made, and that my focus was to assure her that the nuclear system and weapons were under control," said Milley.

"And according to Costa and Woodward, she went on to say, 'you know he's crazy, he's been crazy for a long time,'" DesJarlais continued. "To which they say, and I'm sure you haven't had a chance to read the book yet, 'Milley responded, Madam Speaker, I agree with you on everything.' If you're the principal adviser to the president and she said that to you, do you think that you were doing service to a president by agreeing with the speaker that your commander in chief is crazy?"

Milley corrected the Republican about the conversation.

"I actually said — I actually said I'm not qualified to assess the mental health of the president. What I'm agreeing to is that we have to have a secure nuclear system. So —" he replied.

"Have you had any conversation with the speaker or any of our foreign leaders about our current president's mental capacity?" asked DesJarlais. He went on to cite Rep. Ronny Jackson (TX), a far-right Republican who has demanded that President Joe Biden take a competency exam. Jackson gave Trump a similar exam that asked him to identify an elephant and remember a series of words Trump cited, "person, woman, man, camera, TV."

"No," Milley said when asked if he questioned Biden. "My answer would be the same, I'm not qualified to evaluate a president's mental health or your mental health or anybody's mental health. I'm not a doctor."

"But you were concerned about Trump, you said you were concerned about him when he made the call to China," misquoted DesJarlais, leaning way back in his chair.

"No, I didn't," corrected Milley. "What I said on the call to China was I guarantee you that President Trump is not going to attack you in a surprise attack. I was carrying out his intent. President Trump's intent. In order to protect the American people and prevent an escalation or an event."

That's a very serious accusation to make. You'd think a congressmen would make they have the facts before they challenge any witness, almost to the point of already knowing the answer!

    Lazy republicans!

Um, well, but the question remains; Milley took it on himself to make phone calls to China and Russia to, you know, address concerns they had.
Now, we know that the chief of staff does have contact with other countries, both allies and non allies. And they do that in part to keep communication lines open to avoid unintended consequences.

The question then is, why would the chair of the joint chief of staff undertake to ease China and Russian concerns without direction from the President, who is his ultimate boss, rather than the DNI or whoever? And the issue is still unclear if Milley did this before or after he notified anyone else.

Lazy and incompetent. They are still trying to stick to their script even after Milley Austin and McKenzie shredded their script this morning with their opening statements. And its also like they are deaf. Points coma up and they and the Democrats just destroy them. And then a while later another treasonous conservative/Republican will just bring up the point again like they didn't even hear it get destroyed a few minutes before.

Liz Cheney Apologizes to Milley Over ‘Despicable’ Attacks from Colleagues: They Tried ‘To Question Your Loyalty to Our Nation’
    By Josh FeldmanSep 29th, 2021, 2:28 pm
    336 comments

Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R- WY) took a moment during Wednesday’s Afghanistan hearing to apologize to General Mark Milley for “despicable” comments from her colleagues.

The House Armed Services Committee held a hearing Wednesday to press top military leaders on the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The hearings yesterday and today have also been notable for questions to Milley about his calls to China, first reported by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa in Peril.

Matt Gaetz in particular went on a tear against Milley Wednesday, excoriating him on Afghanistan and bringing up the book to accuse him of “undermining the chain of command.”

Cheney started her time by bringing up the January 6 rioting at the Capitol, saying, “In the aftermath of that attack, many of the members of our constitutional system failed to do their duty. Many of them punted. Many of them today are still attempting to obstruct the investigation into that attack, attempting to whitewash what happened.”

Cheney is one of two Republicans on the January 6 select committee, which issued subpoenas to several Trump allies last week.

And without referring to anyone in particular, she continued with the following:

General Milley, you found yourself in your constitutionally prescribed rule standing in the breach. And for any member of this committee, for any American, to question your loyalty to our nation, to question your understanding of our Constitution, your loyalty to our Constitution, your recognition and understanding of the civilian chain of command, is despicable. I want to apologize for those members of this committee who have done so and I want to thank you for standing in the breach when so many, including many in this room, failed to do so.

Cheney moved on to press Milley over Afghanistan.
