Freedom of Information Act requests to the U.S. Park Police reveal that there were far more arrests for guns than previously known.

NBC News reporter Scott MacFarlane reported that they acquired emails showing conversations about the early-morning crowds who law enforcement officials were already starting to see at the Ellipse on Jan. 6.

"Many/Most visitors have brought backpacks that are not permitted in venue by USSS," says one email. "USPP units are having to collect and sweep these backpacks. Some of the backpacks were placed in the trees on the WAMO grounds and are being removed by USPP and NPS assets."

"Wearing ballistic helmets, body armor and carrying radio equipment and military grade backpacks," observed another email alert shared from a Park Police commander as he watched the crowd near the White House grow.

The report also said that one person was detained with a rifle near the World War II Memorial. It also revealed that an undercover police unit was watching a person in a tree on 16th street they thought had a handgun near his or her waist.

Other incidents of guns were discussed in the emails, such as a D.C. police report "there have been approximately 10 arrests ranging from simple assault to weapons possession" by 9:35 a.m. that day.

An FBI update forward by a Park Police detective explained, "At approximately 10:45 a.m., Federal Protective Service received notification... that two individuals were detained by a protective service officer for possession of two guns in vehicle."

The discussions then began to focus on a group of about 200 alleged Proud Boys on or near Capitol Grounds. "We are monitoring the group's movement through the city," the email said according to the report. By 11:15 a.m. a situation report emailed from the FBI cited at least 400 people on the east side of the Capitol.

"Per U.S. Capitol Police, a Congressional staffer was at the Hyatt Regency Hotel this morning and overheard an individual wearing fatigues state 'We are going to storm the FBI at 2 p.m.," said another alert from the FBI sent to the Park Police.

"POTUS event concluded. Crowds are marching towards Capitol. Capitol PD working three very suspicious packages around Capitol proper. We are checking our NPS areas for suspicious packages out of (sic) an abundance of caution," the next alerts warned.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) previously said in a radio interview that the Jan. 6 attack wasn't "an armed insurrection" and that he doesn't "know any Trump supporters who would do that."

9 months after 9/11.
9 months after the Kennedy assassination.
9 months after Pearl Harbor.
The events leading up to and causing these events were either fully investigated, the significant factors were well known and acted upon, and the culprits either apprehended or being pursued.

The chief of Capitol police and the department's top intelligence officer personally signed off on permits for six demonstrations ringing the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, despite red flags raised by officers that the groups all seemed to share the same goal, according to newly released documents.

BuzzFeed News obtained documents as part of an open-records lawsuit related to the permits for protests for various pro-Donald Trump groups and found that Capitol police were concerned that organizers had attempted to conceal their ties to "Stop the Steal" activist Ali Alexander as part of an effort to secretly coordinate protests on the day Congress was set to certify Joe Biden's election win.

"One Nation Under God is not an organization and does not maintain social media accounts or webpages," wrote one officer who reviewed a Dec. 21 request by a group called One Nation Under God, which asked for a permit to stage a protest against election fraud Jan. 6 at the Senate East Front grassy area between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

"I explained that it appears that the Stop the Steal and the One Nation Under God is one [and] the same due to the similarities and the affiliation with Ali Alexander," the officer added.

Another officer raised concerns Dec. 31 that some of the groups requesting permits appeared to be "proxies for Stop the Steal" and "may also be involved with organizations that may be planning trouble."

However, One Nation Under God was granted a permit personally signed off by then-chief Steven Sund and then-assistant chief of police for protective and intelligence operations Yogananda Pittman, who told Senate committees in April -- after she had been elevated to chief -- that she believed police intelligence officers properly vetted the applications and concluded none of them were affiliated with Stop the Steal.

The permit application listed Nathan Martin, of Shelby, Ohio, as a representative of One Nation Under God, and the newly released documents show a Capitol police officer spoke to him Dec. 28 and found him fairly unresponsive, and the Iraq War veteran directed him to the group's "spokesman," Stephen Brown, who told the officer that Martin was "associated with Stop the Steal and travels with Ali Alexander."

Brown and Alexander did not respond to requests for comment, but Martin told BuzzFeed News that he was affiliated both groups but couldn't explain the purpose of One Nation Under God' or how it was formed, and he couldn't explain why his name was on a permit application he'd never seen.

Police raised concerns that protest -- like four others suspected of being tied to Stop the Steal -- would draw more than the 50 people to which each was limited, but documents show the department performed little more than an internet search to research the groups or their organizers.

"Denying someone a permit based only on a belief that the group is a 'proxy' for another group would be an unlawful prior restraint," said a spokesperson for Capitol police."Before January 6, the Capitol Police knew the Congress and the Capitol Grounds were to be the focus of a large demonstration attracting various groups, including some encouraging violence," the spokesperson added. "Based on this information, the Department enhanced its security posture and tried to get support from the National Guard. What the intelligence didn't reveal, was the large-scale demonstration would become a large-scale attack on the Capitol Building, as there was no specific, credible intelligence about such an attack."

Hundreds of law-enforcement officials were warned about the possibility of a “mass-casualty event” just two days before a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, according to Politico. It was reported earlier this year that the heads of so-called fusion centers—regional U.S. intelligence hubs tasked with tracking domestic terror threats—held a rare national call on Jan. 4 to discuss ominous threats they were seeing ahead of the MAGA gathering. Now, Politico reports that the 300 law-enforcement officials on the call were warned about a possible “mass-casualty event.” An official summary of the call obtained by the site says: “Reporting indicates a significant number of individual [sic] plan to or are advocating for others to travel to Washington, DC to engage in civil unrest and violence.” One participant said threats to the U.S. Capitol building were specifically discussed during the call. Politico reports that there was even a hashtag on FBI’s private communication service to discuss the threats: #CERTUNREST2021. An FBI spokesperson declined to comment on Politico’s report.

During his ten minute speech delivered in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack, former President George W. Bush called out domestic terrorists and, by extension, supporters of Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol on Jan 6th, saying they had much in common with the religious fundamentalists who killed thousands of innocents by crashing three airplanes twenty years ago,

In the somber speech, the former president spoke of the country coming together after the 2001 attack while at the same time pointing out recent divisions.

"Many Americans struggled to understand why an enemy would hate us with such zeal," the former president recalled. "The security measures incorporated into our lives are both sources of comfort and reminders of our vulnerability and we have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders but from violence that gathers within."

"There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home," he continued. "But in their disdain for pluralism, disregard for human life. In their determination to defile national symbols they are children of the same foul spirit and it is our continuing duty to confront them."

According to a report from Rolling Stone, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) -- who proudly bills himself as a member of the bi-partisan "Problem Solvers Caucus" -- has a close relationship with a conservative activist who proudly boasted about chartering buses for people who wanted to attend the pro-Trump rally that preceded the Jan 6th Capitol riot.

Of note is the fact that Fitzpatrick was blunt in his assessment of what happened that day when rioters breached the halls of Congress and sent lawmaker fleeing for their lives, with the Pennsylvania Republican calling it "nothing short of a coup attempt" and taking a shot at Donald Trump for "lying to his supporters with false information and false expectations."

That has not kept him from associating and accepting donations from Jim Worthington, who is being investigated by the FBI over his possible connections to the attempted insurrection.

According to Rolling Stone's Hunter Walker, Fitzpatrick "spoke out against the riot and backed a resolution condemning Trump's 'reprehensible conduct.' But that hasn't stopped Fitzpatrick from maintaining a close relationship — personally and financially — with Worthington, a man who helped bus hundreds of people to Washington for a "Million MAGA March" on Jan. 6. New reporting from Rolling Stone reveals how Worthington has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Fitzpatrick and committees that support him. And, less than five months after Fitzpatrick counseled Worthington on his dealings with the FBI, Worthington hosted a fundraiser for the congressman in his home, according to posts on Worthington's Facebook page."

According to Worthington, Fitzpatrick counseled him to lawyer up after the FBI visit, with Rolling Stone reporting that the GOP lawmaker told him, "Well, you should probably get an attorney, just not because you need one, but that's probably the right thing to do."

The report adds that Worthington claims he never went near the Capitol building on Jan 6th and "He has also expressed confidence that none of the hundreds of people he helped bring to Washington took part in the riot."

In a Facebook post, he wrote, "Not one of them was near the Capitol entrance when the rioting took place nor were most of them aware of any activities at the Capitol until after they got on the bus. These folks are not seditionists, nor do they break the law."

Rolling Stone is also reporting that Worthington's "People4Trump's advertisement for the trip, which has since been deleted, indicated it would include more than just attending Trump's speech. That ad declared, "March will start at the National Mall and proceed to the Capitol for the Electoral Votes.'"
