CNN busts new press secretary for past criticism of Trump — she even called him a ‘sideshow’

While President Trump’s newly-minted White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany is known to be a die-hard loyalist, comments she made in 2015 have reemerged, showing that she wasn’t always in Trump’s corner.

According to a report from CNN, McEnany criticized statements Trump made while announcing his campaign, where he said Mexico was sending “rapists” and drugs and crime to the country.

“To me, a racist statement is a racist statement. I don’t like what Donald Trump said,” she said on CNN in late June 2015, McEnanyn then went on to compare Trump’s remarks to comments about Jewish people made by the Rev. Al Sharpton in the 1990s.

“Donald Trump has shown himself to be a showman, I don’t think he is a serious candidate,” she added. “I think it is a sideshow. It’s not within the mainstream of the candidates.”

On Friday, at her first ever briefing, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany made a promise to never lie to the American people.

On CNN, fact-checker Daniel Dale immediately pointed out two false claims in her briefing.

“There was a significant misstatement — I’ll put it gently because it is her first briefing — from Kayleigh McEnany about one of these state matters,” said Dale. “She was asked about the president’s tweet this morning in which he expressed support for Michigan protesters — he didn’t say who among the protesters, but some were militia members, and was asked who he was talking about, the people that stormed the state building and she said the president was referencing generally you have a first amendment right to protest. that is not what he said. This is not a general expression of the right to protest, this is support for the protesters.”

“I think we should also point out that Kayleigh McEnany significantly misquoted the FBI notes regarding Michael Flynn,” continued Dale. “She quoted the note saying ‘we need to get him to lie.’ In fact, the note said, what is our goal, either truth/admission, or get him to lie. and so, it’s fair to raise questions about the ‘get him to lie part’ but it didn’t say, quote, ‘we need to get him to lie’ and that is what she said it said.”

Trump’s new press secretary just gave her first briefing — and it was a disaster

New White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany gave her first briefing on Friday, an event she indicated would be one of many going forward. And it went about exactly as well as could be expected.

Which is to say that it was a whirlwind of lies, deception, trumped-up outrage, braggadocio, and deflection.

In some ways, it was an improvement over some of the worst performances of her predecessors (leaving out Stephanie Grisham, who never held a single briefing while on the job). She didn’t begin in a completely combative stance, and she didn’t verbally abuse or berate reporters. But we’re not grading on a curve. A press secretary should be judged on their honesty, public service, and decorum, and on all three, McEnany was a disaster.

Early on in the briefing, she told the reporters: “I will never lie to you, you have my word on that.”

But this didn’t last long.

She warped and shaded the truth when she discussed President Donald Trump’s recent tweets about protesters in Michigan.

“The president was referencing generally that in this country you have a First Amendment right to protest,” she said. However, this is highly misleading.

As CNN’s Daniel Dale pointed out, Trump was quite specific in his tweet: “The Governor of Michigan should give a little, and put out the fire. These are very good people, but they are angry. They want their lives back again, safely! See them, talk to them, make a deal.” This wasn’t about a general right to protest; it was about a frightening event that included armed men menacing a government building.

Asked about the accusations of sexual misconduct against Trump, McEnany brushed them off.

“The president has swiftly denied all of these allegations that were raised four years ago. He’s always told the truth on these issues,” she said. She said the issue has been settled — and she slammed the reporters for even bringing it up — because it has been “asked and answered in the form of the vote of the American people.”

Of course, a win in the electoral college doesn’t settle the factual dispute about whether sexual abuse occurred. But even more deceptively, McEnany’s question obscured the many sexual misconduct allegations that have come out since the election, including one of the most disturbing accusations: the account of rape from E. Jean Carroll. She first made the accusation publicly in June of 2019.

It’s also preposterous to say that Trump has “always told the truth” about the allegations against him. It’s exceedingly likely that Trump has lied about many of the cases, and some of his defenses have been provably false. For instance, he claimed he had never met Carroll, even though a photo showed them together.

When McEnany, unprompted, brought up the case of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn — which has garnered extensive attention from right-wing media in recent days — she was even more directly dishonest. She claimed new notes produced in the case showed that an FBI official wrote about the interview with the NSA: ‘We need to get Flynn to lie,’ quote, and get him fired.”

In a follow-up with a reporter, she was yet more explicit, claiming the FBI wrote: “We want to get someone to lie.”

But this claim misrepresented the much more ambiguous statement that the note actually contained, which was: “What’s our goal? Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?” Experts on federal law enforcement have argued that the notes show nothing out of line with usual typical FBI tactics — despite McEnany’s claim that Flynn was targeted politically — though it’s still worth debating the propriety of these law enforcement methods.

A reporter pointed out to McEnany that, regardless of the evidence produced, it’s still a fact that Flynn pleaded guilty to the charge of lying to the FBI. Absurdly, after bringing up the case on her own, she said she didn’t want to get “involved” in a discussion about it.

And then, by the end of the briefing, she decided to repeat some of the president’s favorite lies.

She said the Russia investigation culminated in “$40 million of taxpayer money being lost and the complete and total exoneration of President Trump.”

“The final total was $32M, per official figures,” noted Dale, pointing out that the government “expected to recoup about $17M; Mueller report explicitly said it didn’t exonerate [the president].”

The View co-hosts burn down Kayleigh McEnany’s press briefing: ‘She’s just spinning lies to the American people’

“The View” co-hosts began their Thursday attacking new White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who they said is “just spinning lies.”

Sunny Hostin began noting that McEnany promised when she joined the White House that she would never lie but clearly broke her promise.

“She’s already broken that promise,” said Hostin. “She broke that promise during the first press briefing. But I think what was most striking to me is that she said that it was ‘nonsensical’ to think everyone should get a coronavirus test. That was shocking to me because CNN has just confirmed — I’m not sure if ABC has, but CNN has just confirmed that a valet of Trump’s just tested positive for the coronavirus. So, it’s obviously important enough for everyone in the White House and surrounding the president to be tested for the coronavirus, but it’s not important to the press secretary and to the administration for Americans to be tested for the coronavirus.”

She did give McEnany credit for actually having the bravery to step up to the podium and not being as hostile as Sarah Huckabee Sanders or as “comical” as Sean Spicer.

“She’s spinning lies to the American people rather than being honest with the American people, and she never answered that question by the way that was posed to her. She never answered the question,” Hostin also said. “So, she is just lying to the American people like everyone else.”

Meghan McCain said she could remember when medical experts were telling her it was just like the flu, safe to travel, and to give away her medical masks. Now she’s being told not to go outside without one.

McEnany “was hired for this job because she’s good at spinning propaganda, and she was good spinning propaganda before she got hired, and you can make the argument that’s the role of any press secretary, but it’s probably a little more egregious with this particular president,” said McCain. “Some of the questions I would like to be answered and whenever they do another press conference is, there has been 1,000 percent increase in government suicide hotline calls. think about that. We have the worst unemployment numbers that just came out today. In the last two months, they are higher and far worse than before the great depression. the worst retail sales on record, the worst decline in a product in a decade. 1 in 5 American workers have filed for unemployment.”

She said that if America has no need to be tested and somehow pull ourselves out of the situation “this is going to be far more egregious than any crisis any of us have seen in all of our lifetimes. It is going to make things that look like happened in a science-fiction movie a fantasy.”
