Brian Stelter Curiously Incurious Over Significant Resignations at Major News Outlets

It is not just the quitting but the messages behind them which go ignored.

On Monday Ariana Perkary, a former segment producer and booker at MSNBC for Lawrence O’Donnell’s The Last Word, delivered an open essay on her personal website describing the reasons she was leaving the network. In a revealing but not surprising posting Perkary describes an environment that appears not at all interested in journalistic standards and ethics but one focused solely on ratings and pushing an agenda.

Perkay’s announcement comes rather soon following the notable exit from the New York Times by longtime columnist Bari Weiss, and columnist Andrew Sullivan also resigning the same day from New York Magazine over what he described as a workplace of intolerance towards divergent opinion. Two major columnists on the same day noting the media framework is one of rigid bias and hostility towards free expression should be something of an alarm going off.

When she resigned Weiss posted an open letter to the publisher of the Times describing an environment at the paper fraught with dysfunction and a newsroom that became beholden to a new generation of wokeness at the expense of free expression and sound journalism. In both cases the individuals shared in exposing the systemic problems in these media titans, and they both confirmed what many of us have been witnessing in the coverage emanating from the mainstream media.

Also with both cases — they have not been explored too deeply by CNN’s Brian Stelter. The reason he is brought up is that Stelter is the self-appointed media hall monitor, and when these two major examples of a glaring exodus announcing fundamental problems within the structure of news outlets you might expect some coverage born out of curiosity. Instead there has been very little in the way of serious analysis from Stelter.

I say this not from the position of telling a journalist what they are supposed to cover, but from the stance of what his described position is, and on his past reactions. Notably, it was one and a half years ago when Brian covered extensively another case of writers fleeing a news outlet — RedState.com. When two of our staffers quit, claiming there were internal pressures they could not abide, Stelter was more than eager to have them come on his Reliable Sources program and describe the ‘’problems’’ with our site, and the alleged internal machinations leading to their departure.

But within weeks you have some prominent members of top-flight news outlets coming forward with severe accusations of structural issues affecting the national news narrative, and Brian sees little to explore. He hosted one segment dealing with the Weiss and Sullivan departures, but not with a deep exploration from Weiss herself. Instead Brian’s approach was one of ‘Cancel Culture’ being in play, and he hosted Jill Fillipovic and Amanda Carpenter to discuss this matter.

Sure, Carpenter as a columnist for The Bulwark can fit his label of a ‘’conservative voice’’ and thus appear balanced. It seemed curious Weiss herself was not speaking on the matter, when she has been a contributor on his show in the recent past. Fillipovic dismisses the matter entirely, claiming that news outlets are all about multiple opinions — in complete denial of what these names are reporting from inside media sources — and then declaring that it is FoxNews that is truly intolerant of alternate opinions.

We saw Carpenter equivocate, saying there are some Cancel Culture concerns but also many times the claim simply means that someone disagreed with your opinion. What was never explored however in this piece was the very claims made by those who left, namely that there is a rigid mindset within these news sources and there is fostered hostility towards anyone who strays from the dictated narrative. These are serious charges being leveled, and not by outside pundits. Those describing the problem with the framework worked inside that very system. Stelter has no curiosity to check under the hood, however.

Going back to his piece addressing our site, Brian was perfectly at ease with exploring the alleged internal issues here and speculating on what led to those supposed mandates that were the source of professed troubles. Yet when multiple major media outlets are having a number of vaunted names choosing to walk out, and describing very similar and very serious issues leading to their escape, it gets the lightest touch from Stelter. But is this really cancel culture, seems the closest he wants to get to the uncomfortable operational realities described.

This lack of curiosity from across the media landscape means there is no real interest in addressing what is becoming an obvious and glaring problem. This only means the dysfunction will continue, and ignoring the core issues means the press will stay on its course of exposing itself as the broken down system we are witnessing.

Maddow blows apart the White House talking points on why Trump was rushed to Walter Reed hospital

The host of “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC was able to infer a fascinating conclusion after new reporting on President Donald Trump’s rushed trip to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in November.

Reporting at the time said the visit was “abnormal” and “scheduled last minute.”

“Here is something we do not know until now,” Maddow said. “In November, you may remember a little bit of a health scare or at least a lot of health questions raised about President Trump. It was a Saturday afternoon in mid-November and President Trump was seemingly rushed off to *Walter Reed Medical Center. This was an unannounced trip, it was a surprise, it led a lot of questions to what may have went wrong for the president that may lead to a rushed trip.”

“The White House later cooked up some weird story about how that sudden, unannounced trip to Walter Reed had been a long plan segment of the president’s annual physical and he was like doing a bit of it as if physicals are a thing that’s happening in the episodes over the course of the season or something,” she joked. “It was very strange, that’s not how physicals work.”

“People who’ve worked at the White House say the White House medical office is so well-equipped that White House medical staff can handle on-site all but the most serious incidents without a president ever having to be rushed off campus from the white house to the hospital,” she reported. “But rushed he was. What was that all about?”

She noted that the forthcoming book Donald Trump v. The United States: Inside the Struggle to Stop a President by Michael Schmidt reports further on the mystery.

Maddow explained how Vice President Mike Pence was “on standby to take over” if Trump needed a general anesthesia at Walter Reed.

She explained that, “whatever it was, it was serious enough that the vice president was warned to be on standby, that the president might have to be under general anesthesia, which would occasion Mike Pence having to temporarily become president.”

“And to state the obvious, that is not something that happens when you go in for a segment of your physical,” Maddow noted. “If you had to go under general anesthesia to have a physical, nobody would have an annual physical.”

Joe Scarborough Rips Trump Comparing Lethal Police Force to Missing a Putt: Anyone Else Would ‘Lose Their Job’ For That

Joe Scarborough said that if anyone else used President Donald Trump’s curious analogy about police officers who “choke,” they would almost certainly be fired from their job.

Morning Joe discussed Trump’s interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Tuesday, and they began by focusing on how Trump compared the police shooting and killing of African American suspects to people who miss a 3-foot putt in a golf game. Scarborough slammed Trump over the “racist tropes” of his interview, but he also joined the mockery for the president’s claim that Joe Biden is being controlled by a plane full of black-uniformed people “in the dark shadows.”

“It sounds like bad guys from Avenger movies,” Scarborough exclaimed. “It is so unmoored. It is so out of right field. It is straight from the pages of QAnon…That man on that interview was completely unhinged.”

As the panel discussed the racial element of Trump’s comments and Ingraham’s frequent attempts to save him from his own words, Scarborough eventually got back in and remarked that people on TV have seen their careers collapse for saying “far less” than what the president said.

I guarantee you, if anybody on television compared the killing of a black man seven times to missing a 3-foot putt, they’d lose their job by the end of the day. If a governor said that, if a university president said that, if you had a CEO sayin ‘oh boy, that low income housing in suburbs, white women are going to be in trouble and crime is going to go up,’ they would lose their job…But Donald Trump is still president of the United States.

Yeah this was one of those jaw dropping Rachel Maddow moments. Its the kind of question you ask and don't really expect a straight answer to.

And this is a pretty big deal. There is $40 million missing from the Trump Inauguration. And in her book Melania and Me Stephanie Winston Wolkoff says she knows where it went. So do the three prosecutors she's been working with.

But maybe the bigger bombshell came out in an interview with Rachel Maddow tonight.

Longtime Melania Trump confidante Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, the author of the new tell-all book Melania and Me, was interviewed by the host of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” on Tuesday and made the bombshell revelation that she has tapes.

Maddow noted that there has been reporting that Winston Wolkoff may have recorded conversations with the first lady.

“Can you comment on that at all?” Maddow asked.

“So, Rachel, I — I haven’t commented on this in the past,” she replied. “And one of the reasons why I’m going to share this with you this evening is because I’ve been accused of taping my friend, as the White House said, and how horrible of a human being I am for doing that.”

“And they’re right. If she was my friend, it would be horrible, but Melania and the White House have accused me of criminal activity, had publicly shamed and fired me and made me their scapegoat. At that moment in time, that’s when I pressed record, she was no longer my friend,” she explained. “And that’s not how you treat a friend, so I was going to do anything in my power to make sure that I was protected. And at first I really did think maybe she would come to my aid, maybe she would tell the truth. She turned her back, she did. She folded like a deck of cards and I was shocked when she did it.”

“Are you saying at that point you decided in order to protect yourself that you — that you would make recordings of some of your conversations with the first lady or that you did?” Maddow asked.

“I did, Rachel. I did,” she replied. “And, again, it’s disgraceful in any other context, but who would believe any of this otherwise? You can’t make this up. But, again, I needed the evidence, I needed the evidence.”

“If the White House continues to call you a liar and say that you have made up these conversations, and that these things you are attributing to the first lady or the president are things that didn’t happen, do you have plans to release those tapes to the public or to show them — play them for reporters so that other people can validate what you’re saying?” Maddow asked.

“There is a report coming out,” she replied. “The last thing they should be doing is coming after me.”

Omar, Tlaib call on MSNBC host Joy Reid to apologize after comments deemed Islamophobic
'ReidOut' host said Trump was 'radicalizing' his supporters in 'the way Muslims act'

Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. have called on MSNBC anchor Joy Reid to apologize after she suggested Monday night that President Trump has radicalized his supporters in the same way that "Muslims act."

"Leaders, let's say in the Muslim world, talk a lot of violent talk and encourage their supporters to be willing to commit violence, including on their own bodies, in order to win against whoever they decide is the enemy," Reid said on her new show "The ReidOut."

"We in the U.S. media describe that as they are radicalizing those people -- particularly when they're radicalizing young people. That's how we talk about the way Muslims act. When you see what Donald Trump is doing, is that any different from what we describe as radicalizing people?"

Her comments came in response to President Trump retweeting a video of a pro-Trump caravan which included a man who shot paintballs at protesters.

Omar tweeted that Reid's remarks constituted "casual Islamophobia" and were "hurtful and dangerous."

"Words matter," Tlaib chimed in, "and these words feed into the harmful anti-Muslim rhetoric & actions that we continue to see in this country. It is even more painful to hear it from someone I admire. We deserve an apology."

Reid did not mention the issue on her show Tuesday night, which prompted criticism from the civil rights organization Muslim Advocates.

"She spent much of the show discussing racism, however Reid failed to acknowledge the harm she caused, did not apologize for stereotyping Muslims as violent radicals and failed to address her history of anti-Muslim comments ..." the group said in a statement. "By refusing to apologize and disavow her anti-Muslim comments, Reid is continuing to put Muslims in danger.

"Hate and bigotry should not have a home on MSNBC," Muslim Advocates added. "Joy Reid and MSNBC must take responsibility for what they have unleashed by apologizing on air and agreeing to meet with Muslim leaders to ensure this does not happen again.

Social media users of all political stripes were taken aback by Reid's comments.

Briahna Joy Gray, a former spokesperson for Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, tweeted:"Nearly 1/4 of the world’s population acts how?"

"These remarks are pretty appalling," tweeted Luke Savage of the left-wing Jacobin Magazine. "Joy Reid's subtext is more or less that Trump is 'radicalizing' his supporters, just like barbarians abroad do - 'the way Muslims act' is racism plain and simple."

"This is not good @JoyAnnReid," liberal activist Linda Sarsour said.

"[T]his is, without a hint of sarcasm, LITERALLY Islamophobia," The Washington Examiner's Siraj Hashmi tweeted.

Matt Whitlock, a senior advisor with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, commented: "Might be tough for Joy to blame hackers for this one."

He was referring to a previous controversy surrounding homophobic posts on Reid's personal blog. After the comments first surfaced in 2017, Reid issued an apology, calling her remarks “insensitive, tone deaf and dumb” and vowed to “do better” going forward.

However, after Mediaite found even more articles in April 2018, Reid claimed that an “unknown, external party accessed and manipulated material” on her old blog and “fabricated” the offensive entries and that she was working with a “cyber-security expert” and “notified federal law enforcement officials.”

MSNBC did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

Come on Shooter we both know how this going to end. We will find out that the so called sources with first-hand knowledge are actually someone that heard something from someone else that had heard something someone else had heard from someone else. Or they are just someone that believes that is something Trump would say because it is Trump and that fits their biased view of him.

‘This is the episode where the president resigns’: Rachel Maddow explains why today’s Woodward revelations are so damning for Trump

Wednesday evening’s episode of MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show began with the host reacting to the revelations in Bob Woodward’s new book, Rage, that President Trump knew the COVID virus was deadly as early as February of this year.

“I don’t mean to make light of this and downgrade the gravity because of what’s going on in the news right now… this is heavy stuff for our country. I kept on thinking over and over again as each unbelievable news story broke in the past 24 hours. If this were a TV series of what’s going on in American politics right now, tonight would be the episode of the TV series where the president of the United States resigns,” Rachel Maddow began.

Maddow then played a recording Woodward made with Trump, where the president confesses he wanted to “play down” the deadliness of the virus.

* “I wanted to always play it down I still like to play it down because I don’t want to cause a panic …It is also more deadly than your strenuous flu,” President Trump said.

“That’s what he knew,” Maddow continued. “The president admits he likes to ‘play it down,’ even though he knew just how bad it is, that it is… ‘deadly stuff’ and ‘young people are not immune’ and this is not like the friggin’ flu.”

‘He’s mocking people wearing masks and talking about this is like it’s no big deal and it is going to go away on its own ..In the well-written drama we all wish it was, this is the episode where the president resigns. But, instead we just keep going on…”

Biden kicked Trump's ass in every way possible last night. He proved he is much more mentally fit then the sociopath Trump. Biden proved he has more stamina then Trump. Biden even slaughtered Trump at his own insult game. But most of all Biden spoke to the American people and got his message out.

And Trump got his message out too. But when you see the army of Trump sycophants hit the airways saying do not believe your lying eyes and ears the president did not say what he said you know that's not the message they wanted Trump to get across.

‘People have ears’: MSNBC host stunned as Trump adviser insists president denounced white supremacists

MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson was stunned by White House adviser Peter Navarro’s insistence that President Donald Trump had forcefully denounced white supremacists.

Debate moderator Chris Wallace asked the president to denounce white supremacists, and Joe Biden suggested the right-wing Proud Boys — but Trump demurred and instead urged the extremist group to “stand back and stand by,” which they swiftly incorporated into their logo.

“I think that moment for me underscored * just how poor Chris Wallace did as a debate moderator,” Navarro told Jackson. “There is an expression in boxing, there is a cut man in a corner, Chris Wallace’s function as Joe Biden’s cut man and also as a second debater on the president and when he asked the president.”

Jackson tried to direct Navarro back to her question about the Proud Boys.

“I’m going to get do that,” Navarro said. “When he asked the president the question about that, the president said, of course, he started to say, of course he would denounce that, and Wallace cut him off. So I’m not — I think the president has made it clear that he wants no part of that kind of stuff, what the president also made clear, I think, it is a good distinction between Joe Biden and the president is, the president is for law and order.”

Jackson tried to pin Navarro down, saying that almost everyone who watched the debate agreed Trump had not condemned his white supremacist supporters.

“People have ears, they heard what the president said,” Jackson said. “When asked about the Proud Boys and didn’t denounce them, he did not do that. He said, in fact, ‘stand by.’ Why want he more forceful about that, and do you believe he needs to clear that up?”

Navarro refused to say, and instead complained again about the moderator.

“That’s not for me to say,” he said. ** “What I saw last night was Chris Wallace interrupting him when the president was about to clear that up, and the president and Chris Wallace, I mean that — I thought it was Chris Wallace let that thing get out of hand and then he was Joe Biden’s cut man.”

Jackson asked if he was blaming Wallace for the president’s refusal to denounce those followers.

“The president denounced white supremacists repeatedly,” Navarro insisted. “You aren’t hearing that. What I think Chris Wallace did last night was basically serve as Joe Biden’s cut man. Every time Biden got into trouble — it is a factual matter. Wallace interrupted 76 times the president and 15 times with Joe Biden. What is wrong with that picture?”

**As always with Trump and his lying sycophants the opposite is true. But in this case it is hilarious and just uncanny. Wallace had Biden on the ropes several times asking him really tough questions on very sensitive issues. I know just as a progressive/liberal/Democrat I was holding my breath to see how Biden was going to answer them because they can be minefields for our side. And instead every fucking time Biden didn't have to answer the tough question because Trump was so out of control he kept interrupting. And then they would trade a few insults with Biden even winning the insult game and Biden would never have to finishing Wallace's tough question. That was not Wallace interrupting Trump. That was Trump interrupting Biden because he could not control himself and neither could Wallace control Trump. The answer to those questions had the potential of hurting Biden at least a little bit. But Trump cannot grasp the consequences of his own actions and jumped in and saved Biden every time. Oh fuck did I ever laugh at that.

‘Manslaughter?’ MSNBC’s Mika hammers Trump for putting Secret Service and White House staff in danger

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski called out President Donald Trump as criminally negligent for coming back to the White House with an active COVID-19 infection.

The president staged a dramatic return to the White House from Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was treated for the potentially deadly virus, and “Morning Joe” guest Mark Leibovich said Trump’s grandiose boasts may come back to haunt him.

“The virus goes up and down a lot,” said Leibovich, a New York Times reporter. “I mean, the course of this thing is very, very unpredictable. Maybe he was having an up moment, maybe he was in a particularly, you know, feel-strong state where he could actually go do that photo-op, but one thing we have learned over and over again through this is that, you know, humility is the way to go.”

“There’s an epidemic of famous last words when you walk around saying maybe I’m immune or I feel 20 years younger or don’t let it dominate you,” he added. I mean, that’s the first lesson in how you should not sort of assume that you are going to prevail here given that the bigger forces at work, for instance, fate, are going to ultimately control both your health and the course of these stories.”

Brzezinski wondered if the president meant something else when he claimed to be immune.

“Maybe the president is immune from everything, because he said, ‘Am I immune now?'” she said. “Is he legally immune? What if the Secret Service men and women who got exposed to the deadly coronavirus, what if someone gets sick and dies? I don’t want this to happen, I wish for his health but he’s pushing all of this against the advice of the professionals in his government, against the advice of scientists.”

“At some point isn’t this manslaughter?” Brzezinski added. “If you purposely put people in a position that you send a deadly virus their way, what is that?”
