The Department of Justice's unsealing of seditious conspiracy charges against members of the Oath Keepers has provided the House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol with a roadmap for future inquiry, a former CIA agent explained on CNN on Friday.

CNN's John Berman and Brianna Keilar interviewed CNN counterterrorism analyst Phil Mudd on Friday morning.

"You know, Phil, you have been an investigator before," Berman said. "You have been in the trenches here. What's the evidence that jumps out at you?"

"The time involved in preparations for this, the fact that there are — the amount of weapons acquired in advance, the fact that people are using specific language that indicates this they were coordinating," he replied. "They're not just talking about breaking a window in the Capitol. They're talking about civil war in America."



"And Phil, one thing is important to note here: inside this indictment there is no — as far as I can tell — direct link to the Trump White House or Trump political world," Berman said. "They haven't written that down yet. But does that mean, at this point, investigators aren't looking for that link?"

"No," Mudd replied. "Heck no, they will be looking for that. You have one straight line case, did people gather together with the idea this might be civil war 2.0? Yes. That's a totally different question from the politically explosive question of 'Was there any communication before or after with, for example, a congressional office?' I don't see why you would have to put that in the indictment. But that's why people the January 6th committee want to talk to members of Congress. 'Did you talk to these people? And we would like to see your phone records.' That's why they are going with subpoenas to the Silicon Valley saying we want data."

"This is not done yet, John," Mudd concluded.

House riot committee wants to question Pence over efforts to oust Trump: report

According to a report from the Washington Post, the House select committee investigating the Jan 6th Capitol insurrection is still debating whether they want to compel former vice president Mike Pence to appear and they have indicated that they want to query him about more than the events of that day.

First noting that the committee is still looking into how to force House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Reps. Scott Perry (R-PA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH), to testify about Donald Trump’s role in the Capitol insurrection, the report states the committee is also looking at bringing in Pence without antagonizing him.

According to the report, "the panel has begun preliminary discussions with Pence over how to obtain his account of events, including the sustained pressure he received from Trump and other Republicans to block certification of Biden’s election victory."

The Post reports that they would prefer Pence testify in public and also would like to press him on other details of his time serving as understudy to the former president.



In particular, they would like to question Pence about efforts to oust Trump as unfit for office.

"The committee wants information on a broad range of topics, including the pressure placed on Pence by Trump and his allies to block the electoral certification on Jan. 6 and personnel moves at the Justice Department, according to a person with knowledge of the committee’s requests. The panel is also interested in any conversations that might have occurred regarding a push for Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, declare Trump unfit for office and assume the powers and responsibilities of acting president, the person said," the report states.

The report adds, "The committee is also expected to question Greg Jacob, Pence’s former counsel, next month. The committee last fall interviewed J. Michael Luttig, a former federal judge who advised Pence’s legal team in the days leading up to the Jan. 6 vote."

In an interview with host Molly Jong-Fast on the Daily Beast podcast "The New Normal," former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara explained that, to the best of his knowledge Donald Trump and those closest to him have not been approached by the House committee investigating the Jan 6th insurrection but then explained how the public will know when the pressure may be truly on.

According to the legal expert, the committee has gathered a tremendous amount of information and testimony, but to all appearances have yet to approach the former president or members of his family.

“It’s odd to have allowed all this testimony to be collected, all these documents to be subpoenaed and compiled, and they don’t look like they’ve done any of these interviews. And maybe there’s some reason that I’m not aware of that I can’t think of,” he told the host before adding "I don’t know why that hasn’t happened.”

He did note that Trump, and those close to him, have a distinct habit they fall back on when the pressure gets to them and they panic.

"When you go and you approach people you want to interview about what you might expect them to have done, people who are very mouthy like the Trump folks, they get up in arms, they send letters, they try to quash, they get very upset and they blab about it," he added.

Jim Jordan is a bad liar. The Ohio congressman can’t pull off deceit like the Dear Leader of the MAGA cult. The diminutive Jordan is wont to stammer, backtrack, draw a blank, deny, admit, or squirm like a trapped weasel. Not a good look for Ohio’s 4th U.S. Congressional District Republican who fancies himself a firebrand in shirt sleeves owning the libs. But the former wrestling champ who came to Congress to brawl — not improve lives through constructive legislating — may well lose a looming takedown by the truth.

Jordan is a small-town opportunist who got a taste of fame as the darling of the Tea Party movement and saw scorched earth theatrics as his ticket to the top. Constituents in his gerrymandered district could count on their representative to rail on cue for the television cameras — and nothing else. Jordan’s histrionics shifted into high gear when a voracious cable TV addict occupied the Oval Office. The Urbana Republican shrewdly tailored his tantrums for an audience of one.

For his abject sycophancy, Jordan was singled out by the most powerful man on earth at rallies and heralded as a MAGA prince. It was heady recognition for an otherwise unremarkable politician. His fierce allegiance to the Dear Leader elevated his profile far beyond the 4th District and Jordan became infamous on the national stage. He would not be deterred in his pursuit of greater glory even after the 2020 election was called for a new president. Not even to defend the peaceful transfer of power central to democracy.

Instead, Jordan prostrated himself at the altar of fascism in service to a sore loser. He plotted to overturn the will of millions of fellow Americans based on a lie spread by the aforementioned loser. When the seditious strategies of fellow plotters failed to seize unearned power for the imperious leader, Jordan spun into character and voted to reject the certified outcome of a free and fair election — because, as he ranted pointlessly, it didn’t make sense. That’s it. Jordan’s preferred candidate simply could not have lost, according to him. It was instinctive, if not factual. Compare the size of campaign rallies, he charged. Surely that showed something was wrong with the results.

Even the bloodthirsty rampage of insurrectionists, who trashed the U.S. Capitol, battered police and hunted down lawmakers prepared to formalize President-elect Biden’s victory, didn’t give the congressman pause. That is the true measure of a little man who put personal gain over principle hours after a MAGA mob stormed the institution, he was privileged to serve in, hyped up on violence and vengeance. As evidence mounts of Jordan’s direct involvement in the attempted coup of our government, the MAGA Muppet is furiously tap dancing around incriminating text messages, confirmed meetings leading up to Jan. 6 and conversations with the seditionist-in-chief the day of — all aimed at subverting the Constitution Jordan swore to support and defend.

The Ohio right-winger is up to his neck in the unforgivable attack on our Capitol. He didn’t just amplify the baseless falsehoods of a “stolen election” at every opportunity to stoke MAGA rage until it exploded on Jan. 6. Jordan also worked zealously behind the scenes to steal a decided election for a megalomaniac who lost it fair and square. He advanced plans to scrap the people’s choice and install the loser by having the vice-president simply discard electoral votes Republicans disapproved of. It was a sinister ploy to mortally wound our democratic republic. And almost did.

Still, Jordan doubled down on his underhanded betrayal, by reverting to form and lashing out against those investigating the heinous assault on our democracy. We’ve seen this indignation act before with the Republican sell-out, remember? Jordan was implicated in the Ohio State scandal with credible evidence that nailed him for turning a blind eye toward the serial sexual assault of OSU students under his charge as a wrestling coach. The ongoing abuse, said former students, was so widespread and so well known, it was impossible for Jordan not to have known during his eight years at the school.

Yet Jordan not only denied any knowledge about the scores of college athletes abused by the school’s sports doctor, he also accused the victims of having personal vendettas against him and reportedly pressured one to recant his story lest it hurt the congressman’s career. Today, the same congressman accuses Democrats of being obsessed with Jan. 6 to conduct a protracted “witch hunt” against the twice-impeached disgraced president who sparked an insurrection against his own government.

Again, Jordan denied having any “relevant information” about the Capitol attack and refused to share knowledge of the barbaric event, even if he had it, because the bipartisan Select Committee was just out to get Jan. 6 plotters-turned-blameless bystanders like himself. He decried “the Democrats’ incessant focus on partisan investigations” and declared “the American people deserve better.”

He’s absolutely right. We do deserve better than diversions and denials from a bad liar who, by his own admission, aided and abetted the attempted steal of an election. Jordan recently basked in a standing ovation — inspired by the MAGA myth of massive election fraud in 2020 he helped perpetuate — rather than disavow what he knows is a lie. The Artful Dodger, whose notoriety is rooted in down and dirty deception that supersedes oath to country or actual public service, wants desperately to wrestle an escape from culpability.

But he’s no match for the truth.

Former Arizona Oath Keeper at the center of Capitol riot conspiracy theories will speak to Jan 6 committee

Ray Epps, who was seen in video taken on Jan. 6 just before the Capitol riot encouraging "Stop the Steal" rally attendees to march to the Capitol and breach the building, will sit for a transcribed interview with the House Select Committee investigating the riot, POLITICO reports.

Epps has been at the center of speculation from pro-Trump figures who say, without concrete proof, that he was an FBI plant who was trying to carry out an entrapment scheme. In November, Epps met with the committee and told them he had no connection with the FBI or any other law enforcement agency.



Epps did not appear to join in the violence and his lawyer claims he was never in the Capitol building.

"Part of the theory promoted by Trump supporters is based on the FBI’s decision to remove Epps’ face from a Jan. 6 suspect list six months after the attack," reports POLITICO's Kyle Cheney. "The list contains images and videos of rioters who were caught on camera in the crowd but who have not been identified or tracked by the bureau."

The House Select Committee investigating the January 6th Capitol riots his issued subpoenas to several attorneys who issued legal challenges aimed at blocking President Joe Biden's win, including Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis.

Giuliani notoriously filed dozens of lawsuits aimed at blocking key swing states from certifying their election results, only to lose every single one.

Powell, meanwhile, infamously floated a baseless conspiracy theory claiming Dominion Voting Systems conspired with the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez to rig the election for Biden.

Ellis wrote a series of legal memos that falsely claimed that Vice President Mike Pence had the power to unilaterally reject certified election results, thus kicking the election back to Republican-controlled state legislatures.



"The Select Committee is looking into the causes that contributed to the violence on January 6th, including attempts to promote unsupported claims of election fraud and pressure campaigns to overturn the 2020 election results," Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said in announcing the subpoenas. "The four individuals we’ve subpoenaed today advanced unsupported theories about election fraud, pushed efforts to overturn the election results, or were in direct contact with the former President about attempts to stop the counting of electoral votes."

CNN is reporting that the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th Capitol riots has subpoenaed and obtained phone records from both Eric Trump and Kimberly Guilfoyle.

The records obtained by the committee include call logs that show whom Trump and Guilfoyle had been talking with and the duration of their calls. The records do not contain any details about the contents of their phone calls and text messages, however.



"It appears to be the first time the select committee has issued a subpoena that targeted a member of the Trump family, in what marks a significant escalation of the investigation into Trump's role in the January 6 insurrection," writes CNN. "The decision to subpoena communication records involving the Trump family underscores the aggressive tack the committee is taking as it races to complete its investigation while battling Trump in court over access to documents from his administration."

News of the phone records broke shortly after the House Select Committee issued subpoenas to former Trump lawyers Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani, who were instrumental in promoting former President Donald Trump's false claims about the 2020 presidential election.
