Trump issues frantic response to pending release of Jan. 6 records

The White House will most likely release information about the actions Donald Trump and his aides took during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol over the former president's objections.

Trump intends to claim "executive privilege" to block information from the House select committee investigating the insurrection, but lawmakers argue that's not relevant as they look into the twice-impeached one-term president's actions leading up to the attack -- and as they unfolded, reported the Washington Post.

"It's not really relevant because there's no president involved — there's no such thing as a former president's executive privilege," said Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-MD), a constitutional law scholar who serves on the committee. "That's extremely dilute and not really relevant."

A spokesman for President Joe Biden called the Capitol riot "a dark stain on our country's history" and pledged a thorough investigation to ensure nothing like that ever happens again, while a Trump spokesman issued a frantic response.

"The highly partisan, Communist-style 'select committee' has put forth an outrageously broad records request that lacks both legal precedent and legislative merit," said Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich in a statement. "Executive privilege will be defended, not just on behalf of President Trump and his administration, but also on behalf of the Office of the President of the United States and the future of our nation."

Capitol riot committee slaps four former Trump officials with subpoenas

    Sarah K. Burris

Four former Trump administration officials have been hit with subpoenas by the House select committee investigating the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol building.

The first four officials receiving subpoenas are former chief of staff Mark Meadows, former political strategist Steve Bannon, former social media director Dan Scavino, and former defense official Kash Patel.

The group as a whole has until October 7th to respond to the subpoenas. Bannon and Patel are being ordered to appear before the committee on October 14th, with Meadows and Scavino slated to appear before the committee a day later.

In its letter announcing the subpoenas, the committee singled out Scavino for using social media to heavily promote the January 6th "Stop the Steal" rally that preceded the riot. Patel, meanwhile, was cited for being "involved with discussions among senior Pentagon officials prior to and on January 6th."

Although the subpoenas have been issued, it's no guarantee they will show up when scheduled, as Trump officials were notorious for defying Democratic subpoenas after Democrats took back the House of Representatives in 2018.

The committee's work has taken on new urgency after reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa revealed that Trump attorney John Eastman drafted a six-point plan to have former Vice President Mike Pence refuse to certify the results of the 2020 election.

'They are coming for Donald Trump': MSNBC analyst says subpoenas are hitting his 'inner, inner circle'

The investigation by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol is aimed directly at former President Donald Trump a panel on MSNBC's "The Last Word" explained on Thursday evening.

The select committee subpoenaed former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Daniel Scavino, former Defense Department official Kashyap Patel, and former Trump advisor Stephen Bannon.

Anchor Lawrence O'Donnell said "this looks to me like the inner circle. This is Bannon, this is Meadows, this is people who really had access to the president and as the committee says, knew what he was doing on January 6."

NBC News national affairs correspondent Jon Heilemann explained how close Trump was to Meadows, Scavino and Bannon.

"You think about the spokes of the wheel around Trump, these subpoenas is the most inner, inner circle in many respect, and it sounds the bell. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. The bell tolls for Trump here," he explained.

"And I think what this is a clear testament to is the thing that we've all been paying attention to over the past few months is this committee is really serious. They are serious. They've learned lessons, but they're also by every indication not going to take no for an answer and they are coming for Donald Trump."

Congressional historian Norm Ornstein noted the subpoenas did not just require interviews, but also document production.

"The documents may be even more critical than the testimony," he said.

Capitol riot committee subpoenas 11 high-profile Trump allies -- and it wants to grill them about their funding

The U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol has issued subpoenas for 11 additional Trump supporters being investigated for their role in overturning the 2020 election, which was won by President Joe Biden.

Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) announced the subpoenas in a statement released online on Wednesday evening.

"The Select Committee is investigating the facts, circumstances, and causes of the January 6th attack and issues relating to the peaceful transfer of power, in order to identify and evaluate lessons learned and to recommend to the House and its relevant committees corrective laws, policies, procedures rules, or regulations. The inquiry includes examination of how various individuals and entities coordinated their activities leading up to the events of January 6, 2021," Thompson wrote.

Women for America First (WFAF), which organized the rally preceding the insurrection, is among the groups being investigated. Intriguingly, the committee is also demanding "a range of records that include materials dealing with the planning, funding, and participation in the events."

Here is the full list, with descriptions from the select committee:

    • Amy Kremer, founder and Chair of WFAF.
    • Kylie Kremer, founder and Executive Director of WFAF.
    • Cynthia Chafian, submitted the first permit application on behalf of WFAF for the January 6th rally, and founder of the Eighty Percent Coalition.
    • Caroline Wren, listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "VIP Advisor."
    • Maggie Mulvaney, listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "VIP Lead."
    • Justin Caporale, of Event Strategies, Inc., listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "Project Manager."
    • Tim Unes, of Event Strategies, Inc., listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "Stage Manager."
    • Megan Powers, of MPowers Consulting LLC, listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "Operations Manager for Scheduling and Guidance."
    • Hannah Salem, of Salem Strategies LLC, listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "Operations Manager for Logistics and Communications."
    • Lyndon Brentnall, of RMS Protective Services, listed on permit paperwork for the January 6th rally as "On-Site Supervisor."
    • Katrina Pierson, former Trump campaign official, reportedly involved in the organization of the January 5th and 6th rallies and was in direct communication with the former President about the rallies.
The select committee had previously subpoenaed former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Daniel Scavino, former Defense Department official Kashyap Patel, and former Trump advisor Stephen Bannon.

Insurrection subpoena arrives in Marjorie Taylor Greene’s inbox– she scream tweets

Hump day just got a little bit brighter over here as we learn that someone in the inner circle of Trump-bootlicker and QAnon-apologist Georgia Rep. Margorie Taylor Greene is likely to be subpoenaed. Greene was on the attack Wednesday morning, publicly posting an email sent by Sean Tonolli, a senior investigator on the House committee probing the January 6 insurrection.

Greene not-so-subtly attempted to turn the blame from her unnamed associate to Democrats, who she claims “supported, cheered, & funded violent anti-government riots”—aka Black Lives Matter—without whatever consequence she seems to believe should accompany believing Black lives actually matter. Meanwhile, she complains, the “witchhunt” committee investigates “innocent people that had nothing to do with a random 3 hour riot.”

Greene added that the email was “being sent to some of President Trump’s strongest supporters.” And? Is that supposed to mean something? Of course the email is going to Trump supporters. Who else would storm the U.S. Capitol and attempt a coup after their cult leader lost an election? That’s who should be getting subpoenaed, hopefully, as well as everyone else involved behind the scenes.

    Marjorie Taylor Greene [IMG]
    @mtgreenee

    1. The Democrats supported, cheered, & funded violent anti-government riots all over America for a year killing people & causing billions in destruction to private businesses. Now the J6 witch-hunt is going after innocent people that had nothing to do with a random 3 hour riot.

Greene ends her Twitter rant by implying she will not comply with the subpoena. “We won’t be playing your stupid games anymore,” she writes.

Greene has already been ousted from two congressional committees for acting like a fool in the halls of Congress and fined for her refusal to comply with mask mandates while on the House floor.

“You would think that the Republican leadership in the Congress would have some sense of responsibility to this institution,” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference on February 4 after Greene was banished from her previously held committee seats. “For some reason, they’ve chosen not to go down that path.”

Even some of Greene’s constituents are beginning to question her.

“It’s embarrassing,” Ashley Shelton, a stay-at-home mother who voted for Greene told The New York Times. Shelton says. “I think she’s kind of a loose cannon,” Shelton said. “The more she opens her mouth, the less evidence of her wisdom.”

t's 'all but certain' the Capitol riot committee subpoenaed a ‘senior adviser’ to sitting member of Congress: report

The U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol announced 11 new subpoenas on Wednesday, and one of those being investigated has the same name as a "senior advisor" to a Republican member of Congress.

On Wednesday, MSNBC's Chris Hayes noted that Maggie Mulvaney, the niece of Mick Mulvaney, was among those subpoened.

Politico's Betsy Woodruff Swan noted a fascinating detail.

"Maggie Mulvaney, there's also a person by that name with a LinkedIn profile that tracks with her career who's now listed as a Republican congressional staffer," Swan said. "It seems safe to surmise that we're talking about the same person, in the legislative databases it shows a Republican congressional staffer named Maggie Mulvaney, I think it's all but certain these are the same persons, if so it would be notable that Congress has issued a subpoena to somebody who works for Congress," she explained.

The LegiStorm database shows Mulvaney working as a "senior advisor" to Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV) since January.

In addition, Miller's official congressional website lists someone with that name holding that position. The website Archive.org shows Mulvaney appearing on the page on February 8th.

I wanted to go back to this one because there is something else in there that most people miss but legal experts have been pointing out ever since January 6th. The January 6th committee is now subpoenaing the organizers of the Stop The Steal rally. But as legal experts have been pointing out regardless of criminal charges the organizers of the event are probably going to get their asses sued off for what happened. There have already been multiple lawsuits filed with more to come and the committee just presented current and future plaintiffs with a target rich environment.

And now I do not believe these two are going to get over looked. I cannot believe their suppleness won't be arriving soon.

Some key figures from Jan. 6 were suspiciously absent from latest round of subpoenas

    Capitol Rioters (Screengrab)

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection issued another round of subpoenas this week, but the names of some key figures were missing.

The committee issued its fourth batch of subpoenas seeking information related to the U.S. Capitol riot, this time targeting organizers of a "Stop the Steal" rally outside the White House that drew thousands of supporters to hear a speech from then-president Donald Trump, although some of the leading organizers still haven't been ordered to turn over documents, reported the Washington Post.

"The subpoenas issued by the select committee Wednesday focus on the individuals identified as rally organizers in the permit for the rally at the Ellipse, including [Women for Trump leader Kylie] Kremer and her mother, Amy Kremer," wrote the Post's Philip Bump. "They do not, however, include those who sought permits from the Capitol Police for rallies there."

"This is a noticeable gap," Bump added. "It's not just that the rally at the Capitol was an early indicator of what was to come or that it was obviously located right at the place where violence broke out on the day of the riot, it's also that the rally was obviously a function of the fringier elements of Trump's coalition and included close Trump allies."

Trump himself promoted the event, which he promised Dec. 19 would "be wild," and the website WildProtest.com, likely a project of right-wing provocateur Ali Alexander, invited Trump supporters to protest at the Capitol, and at some point his rally and the one at the Ellipse were blended together into one package called March to Save America.

Organizers were concerned by the overlap between the fringier rally at the Capitol and the one at the Ellipse, and the latest batch of subpoenas includes Cindy Chafian, who submitted permits on behalf of Women for Trump, and Trump aide Katrina Piersen, who had assured the president that Alexander's rally would focus on him and his speech.

The committee has asked the National Archives to provide copies of any communication between the White House and Alexander, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and longtime Trump associate Roger Stone -- who all were scheduled to speak at the Capitol rally -- but so far no subpoenas have targeted the organizers of that event.

"That certainly doesn't mean that none will come; the committee's work is still in its early stages," Bump wrote. "But it stands out as an existing gap. There was a rally planned for the Capitol grounds organized by far-right allies of the president's and at which a close ally of Trump's, Stone, was scheduled to speak."

"It's an area on which the committee will necessarily need to shed light but, as of now, remains stubbornly in the dark," Bump added.

'We're not going to play these games': House riot committee member serves notice to subpoenaed Trump aides

    Tom Boggioni
    October 02, 2021

    Rep. Jamie Raskin (R-MD)
Appearing on MSNBC on Saturday morning with host Ali Velshi, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) left no doubt that the House select committee investigating the Jan 6th Capitol riot will use every legal tool in the box to compel members of Donald Trump's inner circle to appear before his committee and reveal what led up to the insurrection that sent lawmakers fleeing for their lives.

Admitting he fully expects Trump's associates to attempt to avoid appearing, the Maryland Democrat warned them not to "try the patience" of the committee members.

"I want to start by understanding this concept of criminal referrals because most of us will never be subpoenaed to Congress so we won't really know what are you supposed to do and what does the threat of criminal referrals mean?" host Velshi prompted.

"Those are two different things," Raskin explained. "The criminal referral is if our select committee on January 6th comes in possession of evidence related by criminal conduct by people that the Department of Justice is currently unaware of, we will refer it to them. In other words, if we have crimes that took place that the DOJ didn't know about we will send it to them for subpoenas, we have all of the same authority that a court would have to issue subpoenas."

"So if you get one of these subpoenas, that is not an optional thing." he continued. "That is legally mandatory and we can coerce your cooperation through criminal contempt or civil contempt or what's called the powers of Congress where we can call people before Congress and fine them and use our own sanctions and that hasn't been done for a long time, but I don't think anybody should be testing our patience at this point."

"I want to get greater clarity on the criminal referral that I asked you, you said we're going to subpoena them, they're going to follow the law," Velshi pressed. "That's it. If any of them think they can slither away from this, they should be worried about the information we've already got. when he said we'll offer criminal referrals is that for not showing up or not giving the information that you requested or is that the fact that they may be underlying criminal activity."

"It could be both," the Democratic lawmaker replied. "When we come to people that have committed crimes on January 6th, we will turn that over, but at the same time, the chairman has signaled our determination to get all of the information we're asking for. It's just not discretionary or optional. It's the government's subpoenas or documents from you: you have to testify unless you will assert a Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination and we don't think that that exists."

"In other words, we will immunize you from the use of any information you give us, but you do still have to testify," he added. "The point is we're not going to play these games like they did during the Trump Administration."

'It's no joke': Subpoenaed Trump associates facing life-changing fines and jail time if the DOJ steps in

    Tom Boggioni
    October 03, 2021

Amy Kremer, a Trump supporter, on CNN/Screenshot
Appearing on MSNBC on Sunday afternoon, Politico reporter Betsy Woodruff Swan said threats by the House select committee investigating the Jan 6th insurrection asking for criminal charges against any associate of Donald Trump who balks at at being subpoenaed should be taken with the utmost seriousness based upon the penalties that could be handed down.

Speaking with host Alex Witt, Swan said that the DOJ under President Joe Biden would likely be accomodating if the Democratic-led committee asked it to step in and file federal charges.

"The threat to issue criminal referrals is significant; any time you start talking about members of Congress accusing people of crimes is a big deal," Woodruff Swan began. "But it's doubly important because the Biden administration controls the political appointees at the Justice Department. If Trump were president and Congress were controlled by Democrats, there's no way the DOJ would bring charges against people for defying a Democratic congressional investigation."

"Now, if these Democrats are able to put together criminal referrals that are serious, which they will be able to do if any of these witnesses defy their subpoenas, there's a very good likelihood that DOJ will take those referrals seriously," she continued, "and that's something that is sure to be front of mind for any of these Trump World witnesses who are thinking about defying those subpoenas."

After stating, "The fact that DOJ is a serious player in this particular moment of the investigation is something that I'm sure is worrying a number of these witnesses," Woodruff Swan was asked by the MSNBC host, "To the point of thinking, yeah, we could end up in jail, we could be behind bars, is that realistic?"

"Certainly, certainly, the Politico reporter replied. "My understanding is that the criminal penalties, if you're convicted of defying this type of Congressional investigation could include a fine that's up to six figures as well as a prison sentence of, I believe, up to a year."

"It's no joke," she added. "This is pretty serious, a pretty serious threat that will be motivating these witnesses when they're trying to figure out what their legal options may be."

Subpoenaed Trump associates facing trap as deadline looms to turn over Jan 6th records: report

According to a report from Politico, the next big clash between the House select committee investigating the Jan 6th Capitol riot and members of Donald Trump's inner circle will play out on Thursday when subpoenaed officials need to respond to the committee whether they comply or not.

As Politico's Kyle Cheney wrote, Trump is faced with "a fast-approaching deadline to attempt to block the National Archives from releasing records from his White House that could shed light on his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results," and Trump associates including former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Dan Scavino, Steve Bannon and Kash Patel are also on deadline to turn over their own records.

On Friday committee chairman Bennie Thompson drew a line in the sand, stating he was more than willing to issue "criminal referrals" to the DOJ to anyone who ignores the deadline.

With that in mind, and with committee members strongly believing the Trump's associates will balk, the committee has been hearing secret testimony from other members of the former president's administration that could be sprung on the Trump higher-ups should they finally be compelled to answer questions under threat of a DOJ referral.

According to Cheney, "... committee members expect that these witnesses won't willingly cooperate — one of the reasons the panel issued subpoenas without offering them a chance to voluntarily provide documents or testimony," adding, "One reason for their confidence: Witnesses have begun coming forward to testify behind closed doors in transcribed interviews, a setup used by the House Intelligence Committee during Trump's first impeachment."

The Politico report notes, "Almost exactly two years ago, the impeachment panel — helmed by Rep. Adam Schiff, who sits on the Jan. 6 committee today — broke Trump's logjam when it secured a voluntary transcribed interview with veteran diplomat Kurt Volker. That led to a cascade of interviews with other State Department and Pentagon officials," with Cheney adding, "Members of the Jan. 6 committee are hopeful for a similar snowball effect now that their initial interviews have begun."

On Sunday, Politico's Betsy Woodruff Swan reported that subpoenaed Trump officials could face up to one year in jail and a six-figure fine should the DOJ have to step in with a criminal indictment.

@vincenzz, with these silly posters you expose the fact that you have forgotten what your high school English teachers taught you about spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, and you lack the ability to compose original arguments.
