Envoy Khalilzad says Afghan, Taliban peace talks going well

U.S. Envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has confirmed peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan appointed government officials in Qatar are going well. His statement came Saturday after the first day of peace talks between the two groups.

While the opening meeting was largely ceremonial, real negotiations are now being held behind closed doors. Political analysts believe the path to peace will be difficult because both sides have to figure out what policies are best for the Afghan people.

The two groups have been discussing the possibility of lasting ceasefires, women’s rights and the disarming of the Taliban.

“I have heard positive things about the meeting between the two sides without any foreigners being there,” said Khalilzad. “I have talked to both sides, they have been positive of their account of their meeting.”

The head of Afghanistan’s peace council was also optimistic about the initial peace talks with Taliban leaders. Abdullah Abdullah reiterated both sides need to be able to compromise if they want to move forward peacefully.

“As one of the top most issues in the minds of the people, reduction in violence in a significant way, in a way that is palpable,” explained Abdullah. “Also getting to a humanitarian ceasefire, hopefully a permanent ceasefire.”

This came after President Trump brought the two sides together for bilateral discussions. The President has been working to end the war in Afghanistan and improve Middle East relations.

 

President Trump announces peace agreement between Bahrain, Israel

President Trump has announced a new peace agreement between Bahrain and Israel. On Twitter, the President wrote, “Our two great friends, Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain, agree to a peace deal, the second Arab country to make peace with Israel in 30 days.”

He also released a joint statement, in which he confirmed both regions agreed to the establishment of full diplomatic relations. According to the statement, leaders from the two countries will meet in Washington next week to sign the historic peace accord.

President Trump spoke more on the deal at the White House.

“This is a truly historic day,” he stated. “This is now the second peace agreement that we have announced in the last month.”

He added, “I am very hopeful that there will be more to follow.”

The President has said Bahrain and Israel will exchange embassies and ambassadors, begin direct flights between their countries, and launch cooperation initiatives across a broad range of sectors, including health, business, technology, security and agriculture.

 

President Trump: Other Arab nations may join Israel-UAE deal

President Trump has called on other Arab nations to join the latest peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The President added countries are “lining up” to join the treaty.

“Next week at the White House, we’ll be having a signing between the UAE and Israel. We could have another country added into that. I will tell you, countries are lining up that want to go into it.”

He went on to say he’s in talks with the king of Saudi Arabia on the matter. The President also said even Iran’s ayatollah regime may finally join talks.

The President added he also expects the Palestinian National Authority will want a peace deal with Israel once it discovers the majority of Arab nations have joined.

 

White House helps broker peace deal between Serbia, Kosovo

The Trump administration has successfully brokered another historic peace deal. On Friday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Kosovar Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti signed an agreement at the White House, which will establish their new economic relations.

President Trump also signed the document as a witness. Staff members like Robert O’Brien, Jared Kushner and former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell stood present.

Grenell, who has served as the special envoy for Serbia and Kosovo, has said this deal will put an end to decades of fighting. He has called the conflict a nightmare.

Serbia and Kosovo have been in an ongoing conflict since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1989. The conflict even prompted Operation Allied Forces in 1999. The U.S. and NATO launched a bombing campaign on strategic positions in Serbia to end their president’s ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

During a press briefing following the signing, Grenell discussed how President Trump has challenged the idea of using political dialogue in negotiating. He instead suggested negotiations begin with the discussion of economics.

“If we would have done the typical political thing, listened to all the really smart people at NGO’s and think tanks here in Washington, D.C., we would not have this agreement,” he added.
