White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows disputed CNN’s account that President Trump abruptly cut off last night’s 60 Minutes interview set to air Sunday, but did say host Lesley Stahl came across as more of an “opinion journalist” than a “real” reporter. “Well, he didn’t walk out,” Meadows told Fox Business. “The characterization of that, he spent over 45 minutes with Lesley Stahl. I’ve looked at every single minute of the interview and then some. We have tape of every single minute.” * Trump had threatened to preemptively post footage of the CBS show, calling Stahl’s interview “FAKE and BIASED.” He also tweeted a short clip of her not wearing a face mask.

Last night, CNN White House correspondent Kaitlin Collins tweeted there had been “some drama” during the CBS interview, adding that ** the president “abruptly ended his solo interview after around 45 minutes” and “did not return for a scheduled walk & talk he was supposed to tape” with Vice President Mike Pence.

Writing in the Washington Post this Wednesday, columnist George Will slammed President Trump as a “practitioner of crybaby conservatism.”

Citing Trump’s disputing of reports that his inauguration turnout was lower than Barack Obama’s, Will says Trump’s presidency began with a “wallow in self-pity” and will probably end “in ignominy when he slinks away pouting, trailing clouds of recriminations…”

According to Will, the Trump era has caused the Republican Party to “eagerly” surrender its self-respect. “And having hitched its wagon to a plummeting cinder, the party is about to have a rendezvous with a surly electorate wielding a truncheon.”

Will says that now is a good opportunity to encourage eligible voters “to take the trouble to participate in a historic correction.

“It is not yet probable, but is not highly improbable, that Joe Biden can become the first candidate in 32 years to capture more than 400 electoral votes,” Will writes. “He can do this by carrying some Trump 2016 states where Biden is either leading or within the margin of polling error — Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Texas.”

In a now-infamous phone call, President Donald Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to insert himself into American politics by announcing an investigation of his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. That call and the scheme surrounding it led to Democrats impeach Trump, alleging that he had corruptly leveraged his office and congressionally approved funds to benefit his own political campaign.

Trump appeared to be taking a shot at a similar gambit, if on a much smaller and less elaborate scale, on Friday during a televised call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While discussing a new plan for Israel to normalize relations with Sudan on speakerphone in front of reporters, Trump tried to goad Netanyahu into attacking Biden.

“Do you think Sleepy Joe could have made this deal, Bibi? Sleepy Joe?” Trump asked, smirking. “Do you think he would have made this deal? Somehow, I don’t think so.”

Of course, the ask wasn’t as duplicitous or egregious as the one Trump made of Zelensky. It involved no withholding of military aid, and he was simply asking for Netanyahu to disparage his opponent, not open a criminal investigation of him. Still, it was wildly inappropriate and corrupt, both from the perspective of domestic and international politics.

And despite the fact that Netanyahu has made no secret for his preference for Republicans and his fondness for Trump in particular, the Israeli prime minister refused to bite on the president’s bait. He pointedly avoided disparaging Biden.

“Well, Mr. President, one thing I can tell you is that we appreciate the help for peace from anyone in America,” Netanyahu said. “And we appreciate what you’ve done enormously.”

The smile dramatically fell from Trump’s face, and he gave a deflated: “Yeah.” It was clear he was disappointed that Netanyahu didn’t join him in attacking Biden, which would have given him a de facto campaign ad with the endorsement of one of his favorite foreign leaders.

Many pointed out, though, that despite Netanyahu’s fondness for Trump, he can read polling data as well as anyone. And the polling quite clearly indicates that Biden is heavily favored to win in the 2020 election. Netanyahu is likely to have a more fraught relationship with Biden regardless, but he wisely doesn’t want to intentionally aggravate the Democrat in the last days of an election.

Netanyahu seemed to try to make up for the disappointment his remarks surely caused by adding: “This will be registered in the history books. History registers who did what, I think it does.” But the damage was done.

If he wins re-election next month, President Donald Trump is planning a massive culling of some of his key appointees, says a new report by Axios’ Jonathan Swan and Alayna Treene.

The heads lined up on the metaphorical chopping block reportedly include FBI Director Christopher Wray, CIA Director Gina Haspel, and Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

Two people who have discussed these officials’ fates with Trump were the sources for the story, and said that the president would have fired these officials already if not for what Axios described as the “political headaches” of doing so before the election.

Wray and Haspel are “despised and distrusted almost universally in Trump’s inner circle,” write Swan and Treene, and a victory on November 3rd would “embolden” Trump to purge anyone he views as disloyal, or who is unable or unwilling to execute his preferred policies.

It is common for presidents who are re-elected for a second term to shuffle around some key officials and bring in new faces to help guide their agenda for their final years in office, but removing the heads of America’s main intelligence and security agencies all at the same time is raising eyebrows.

Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with other top officials in his administration, including Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Bill Barr, although Axios’ sources said that he had not yet made any “formal plan” to fire them, and was focusing his ire on Wray, Haspel, and Esper.

Unsurprisingly, a core factor in the president’s desire to replace these officials is their failure to blindly follow Trump in some of the conspiracy theory-fueled investigations he has sought to launch against political opponents. For example, Wray refused to launch an investigation into Hunter Biden’s foreign business activities and testified in September that the FBI had not seen evidence of widespread fraud related to mail-in ballots, and Haspel has opposed efforts by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe to declassify documents that Trump believes show how government officials “spied” on his campaign.

Anyone who does survive the pending November purge should expected even more “loyalty tests” moving forward, noted Axios, the culmination of ongoing efforts since February to drive out “Never Trumpers” and other insufficiently loyal bureaucrats.

Officially, the White House is denying these reports. “We have no personnel announcements at this time nor would it be appropriate to speculate about changes after the election or in a 2nd term,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said to Axios.

NY Times calls out Trump’s broken promises on creating a manufacturing renaissance in America

When President Trump spoke at a 2018 groundbreaking ceremony for the Foxconn plant in Wisconsin, he promised the plant would provide thousands of jobs and would be the “eighth wonder of the world.” But as the New York Times’ Alan Rappeport points out, the company has hired “less than a quarter of the 2,080 workers it was expected to employ last year and invested just $300 million, rather than the expected $3.3 billion.”

“Foxconn’s failure to create the kind of factory powerhouse that Mr. Trump described demonstrates how the president’s promise of an American manufacturing renaissance has not always resulted in the pledged jobs or economic investment,” Rappeport writes. “Mr. Trump has threatened companies like General Motors, Harley-Davidson and Carrier with backbreaking taxes and boycotts if they moved manufacturing abroad, often cajoling job promises out of those firms. But in many cases, those pledges went unfulfilled once Mr. Trump’s attention shifted elsewhere and market realities could not be ignored.”

Speaking to the Washington Post, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire science and engineering professor said that Trump likes to “fly in and make a show of being involved and showing that he got something going” but comes up short on delivery, adding that he was hoping that his students might find jobs at one of Foxconn’s nearby plants that now sit vacant.

“It was frustrating for us,” he said.

On Monday, The Washington Post reported that White House officials are frustrated with chief of staff Mark Meadows, over his management style and his failure to communicate vital information to both the public and his colleagues.

“Meadows’s uneven handling of the pandemic response and other West Wing crises has dismayed many staffers and campaign officials, who say he has largely proved to be an ineffective chief of staff, instead serving more as a political adviser and confidant,” reported Josh Dawsey. And the frustration reportedly goes deeper than his contradictory claim over the weekend that the administration will not control the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Four senior administration officials said there was no communication for several days from Meadows to the staff about the president’s condition; whether the West Wing would partially close and whether they should work from home; what precautions were in place after the widespread infections; or how many other staffers had the virus,” continued the report. Meadows, moreover, contradicted the president’s doctor on the severity of his condition in discussion with reporters.

“Aides also said Meadows knew about a positive coronavirus result for top Trump aide Hope Hicks for more than eight hours before it was disclosed to the public on Oct. 1 — and before the president left for a fundraiser that day in New Jersey,” said the report. “A person close to Meadows said the White House did not plan to disclose publicly the condition of aides who became sick but always planned to disclose the information if the president became infected.”

In spite of all this, Meadows is reportedly unlikely to be fired, because he has maintained a close relationship with the president himself, with Trump calling him for advice up 8 to 10 times a day.

President Trump has taken the lead over Joe Biden in a nationwide poll of likely voters. On Monday, the Rasmussen Reports released a survey that identified 48 percent of voters support the President, while 47 percent are backing the former vice president.

The boost for President Trump came just a week after Rasmussen released a poll that showed Biden leading the President at 49 to 46 percent
