White House Instructs Agencies to Ignore Biden’s Transition Team Until Trump Accepts Defeat, Says Report

Leaders at agencies across the federal government have been instructed not to cooperate with Joe Biden’s transition team until President Donald Trump finally accepts that he’s lost the election, The Washington Post reports. The report states agencies have been told to ignore communications from Biden’s team until his victory is confirmed by the General Services Administration—an agency that, in normal times, signs the paperwork to start the transition, but its Trump-appointed leader has so far refused to do so. One senior administration official told the newspaper: “We have been told: Ignore the media, wait for it to be official from the government.” On Monday, a Biden transition official said legal action is “certainly a possibility” when asked how they plan to resolve the obstruction.

Top Pentagon Official Resigns Day After Trump Fires Esper

James Anderson, the Pentagon’s acting undersecretary of defense for policy, resigned Tuesday a day after President Trump fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper. Anderson had been assigned to second-in-command, but had been acting as the Pentagon’s top policy chief since June. “Now, as ever, our long-term success depends on adhering to the U.S. Constitution all public servants swear to support and defend,” Anderson wrote in his resignation letter, which came in advance of an expected request to resign from the White House.

Insiders told Politico they expect Anderson to be the first of several departures after Esper’s firing, and that he’d clashed with other Trump appointees. His departure leaves a power gap possibly to be filled by his deputy Anthony Tata, who was pulled from consideration for the top job last year over Islamophobic tweets. Tata also pushed “deep state cabal” conspiracy theories.

President Donald Trump wants to overturn the election results to give himself another four years, but a White House reporter said he hasn’t performed his duties for weeks or even months.

The president spent the last month, after returning from the hospital for coronavirus treatment, campaigning for re-election, and Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Trump had basically stopped doing the job he has already lost.

“Successful recounts tend to pick up a few dozen votes, maybe 100 or so at most, in terms of changing sides, and that’s not necessarily to mean they would break for President Trump,” Lemire said. “Joe Biden may pick up more votes in a recount. The margins in these states are too big and these legal challenges seem destined to fail. The White House has had no meaningful success in any legal challenge. Even, as you say, if one state was to turn its result over, he would still be well short.”

“What next?” he added. “How long do Republicans let him play out this game? I’ve talked to* some of his advisors and said, what’s the harm in giving him a few days to come to term with this as they explore his legal options. That’s what we’ve heard from Senate Majority Leader [Mitch] McConnell and others.”

However, the delay puts the nation at risk, because there’s not a smooth transition period for the president-elect and the current president has basically abandoned his responsibilities.

“This is slowing a transition at a time of true crisis,” Lemire said. “The coronavirus pandemic is surging out of control across the country, the worst it’s ever been, state by state setting record number of cases each day, and we have a president who, in the meantime, has largely abandoned his day job. He himself has not attended a coronavirus task force briefing in months. His public schedule does not show he’s received an intelligence briefing since Oct. 1. The White House hasn’t read out a foreign leader call in weeks.”

“He is simply not doing governing the country right now at a time of crisis,” Lemire added, “and we’re seeing Joe Biden try to step into that breach. His campaign offered readouts of several foreign leader calls yesterday who offered congratulations to the president-elect. We know that he has already organized his coronavirus task force, but there’s a limit to what he can do right now. He is not the president, he is not receiving these briefings. There comes a moment, and we may already be there, where President Trump’s refusal to cooperate with the transition, with the government agencies refusing to authorize the win and allowing these Biden landing teams to enter these government agencies

‘Crazy thing going on inside that White House’: Retired General says Trump loyalists want to stage a coup

A four-star United States retired general is sounding the alarm on key national security concerns after President Donald J. Trump shakes up the Pentagon staff less than one week after losing the election to President-elect Joe Biden.

“I have been shot at a lot and nearly killed a bunch of times,” said Gen. Barry Richard McCaffrey (ret.). “I‘m not an alarmist. I stay cool under pressure. Mark me down as alarmed. I just listened to Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) — wonderful, experienced, mature guy — say this is just payback to [Mark] Esper not being a loyalist. I don’t believe it. We’re watching a setup of some people who are unqualified for office to be in control of the 2.1 million men and women of the armed forces.”

McCaffrey said, “And I remind our viewers, the only one who can give orders to the armed forces is the president and the secretary of defense. This acting secretary Chris Miller is a perfectly good, experienced combat soldier. He is unqualified for this office. The other three, one of them, a retired one-star, is a dangerous man. That team moving in, no one in his right mind would have accepted an appointment for 90 days. These people are in there to control a coercive institution of U.S. democracy. Watch out.”

Host Ari Melber asked McCaffrey, “What specifically are you warning against, general? Do you feel based on your knowledge of these individuals and the situation that you have a credible reason or evidence to think that there could be an effort to enlist the military in something unlawful?”

“The federal government tools could be used in an oppressive manner, start with the attorney general of the United States, the Department of Homeland Security, and federal law enforcement agencies, who — unless they get an order that is patently illegal — will carry out their instructions. So the end of the story is, you know, I don’t believe in any way this should be minimized or this is just a tantrum of a president trying to accommodate himself to the outcome of the elections. This is some crazy thinking going on inside that White House.”

McCaffrey added, “If I was a CIA officer trying to understand what was going on in a third-world country and I saw this pattern of behavior, I would say the stronghand’s trying to take over the government and defy an election — and I think they’re playing with that idea inside the White House. I can’t imagine that Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and even [Sen. Mitch] McConnell (R-KY) and people like this are going to disregard the Constitution, but I think that’s the thinking that’s going on in the White House right now and we ought to be worried about it. And the Republicans in Congress ought to speak up and push back.”

Former WH Chief of Staff John Kelly Says Trump ‘Hurts Our National Security’ by Blocking Biden Transition: You Can’t ‘Go From Zero to 1,000 MPH’

Retired four-star general and former Trump White House chief of staff John Kelly offered a sharp rebuke of his former boss, saying the president “hurts our national security” with his insistence on blocking the official Biden transition to pursue absurd conspiracy theories to try to overturn his election loss.

According to an interview Kelly did with Politico, Trump’s previous top White House staffer insisted that the president should immediately allow his successor to receive intelligence briefings and begin the process of transitioning the federal government.

“You lose a lot if the transition is delayed because the new people are not allowed to get their head in the game,” Kelly told Politico. “The president, with all due respect, does not have to concede. But it’s about the nation. It hurts our national security because the people who should be getting [up to speed], it’s not a process where you go from zero to 1,000 miles per hour.”

Kelly, like an overwhelming number of former White House officials, has become a something of a Trump critic since leaving the president’s inner circle, disputing his integrity and reportedly trashing him in private as ‘the most flawed person I have ever met.”

Continuing in this vein, Kelly went on to say the ongoing delays would have an accumulating affect on the Biden administration’s ability to govern on day one. It’s a sentiment Republican senators have expressed as well.

“The transition, in the national security realm in particular and the homeland security realm, is just so important that every day that the transition is delayed really kind of handicaps,” Kelly said in the interview. “I know Mr. Trump better than most people do. I know that he’ll never accept defeat and, in fact, he doesn’t have to accept defeat here. He just has to do what’s best for the country and in the country’s interest.”
