I disagree. Every step along the progression of history is important to how our society has been shaped in the present, and as hard as it is to separate our emotions from the events of the past, we should all learn from those events at a minimum. I personally believe that historical monuments belong in museums, historical parks, and other specifically designated places so that people have the historical context of our country...the good as well as the bad.

Someone needs to check on him. There is no such thing as a confederacy. Even when they tried that flag never made it that far north. No, he had it right traitor is right...what they did was a slap in the face to every loyal, oath keeping, Patriotic Soldier who wore a uniform, carried a weapon, and stood a post. To our Honored Dead sacrilege..funny most of them would not dare to go to Iraq or Afghanistan but would not hesitate to attack the Land of their Birth...sad

I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I recognize neither red state nor blue state, there are 50 states each given a star on the field of Old Glory a.k.a The Stars and Stripes a.k.a The ONLY Official Flag of the United States of America. I .do not recognize the Confederate flag in any of its incarnations. That flag was erected on the battlefield in direct opposition to the Flag of the United States. It represented a rogue state, as unlawful in the declaration of its existence, as unlawful in it's adaptation as a standard and as a national symbol within the borders of the United States of America. There is a misconception that has taken root as time marched forward. There are some people who say that the confederacy is their heritage. That is not the truth. Robert E Lee, the traitor placed in overall command of the rebellious force, who to the man, were nothing more than traitors, as was their leadership. On April 9, 1865 Lee and the remnants of his beaten down and demoralized cabal of secessionist officers would meet one last time under the trappings of their mythical confederacy to surrender what was left of the defeated confederate traitors at Appomattox Court House, VA, to General Ulysses S Grant. Ever the magnanimous Gentleman Soldier the terms of surrender were very lenient and showed a great deal of latitude in deference to a defeated for. The enlisted traitors were relieved of their muskets, while the traitorous officers were allowed to keep their swords and other regalia, with the charge to obey the federal laws of the United States of America. Which they did. And thus ended the question of secession, the institution of slavery albeit only in those rebellious states, the buffer states that did not participate were allowed to keep their slaves a few years longer. Starting in the year 1620 until 1865, 245 years had passed. For 245 years slavery flourished in the Continental United States. If you start in the year 1861 until the year 1865, 4 years had passed. The confederacy lived for four years, the Institution of Chattel Slavery lived 245 years but today when blacks bring up the subject of reparations we are told to stop pulling The race card. We are told that no-one today had been a slave nor did anyone own slaves in the modern era. We are advised that those things and events happened so long ago no-one could probably remember the particulars, conversely, many Southerners claim that the Confederacy is a part of their heritage. They proudly fly the colors of that long ago settled question in the backs of their pickups behind the gun racks. Many Southern State Capitals used to fly the Stars and Bars from federal buildings in the state capitols. They were even embossed on the license plates of Southern vehicles and given design in the heraldry of some state flags. Military bases, schools, public parks, were dedicated to and named after several notable Confederate traitors. But ask yourself a few simple questions. After World War I how many bases did we name and dedicate to Otto Von Bismarck? How many parks and statues of Kaiser Wilhelm? Ok World War II, how many schools did we name after Hitler...or Goering? How many hospitals were dedicated to Dr. Mengler? If you all guessed zero you are correct. It is very peculiar for the victors to go on honoring the nation's traitors from the Civil War, and Yet Benedict Arnolds name will live on in infamy while the CW traitors are honored at dedication ceremonies being celebrated for their betrayal of the Nation.

Comparing a back water squabble to the largest war ever fought is a bit of a stretch.

By backwater squabble you mean the American Civil War. Well Sir, your flair for minimalism is duly noted. That "backwater squabble" that you refer to remains the bloodiest war our nation has been involved in:
-The total number of fatal casualties from the C.W. was 683, 000 American lives lost. 623,026 were deemed combatant casualties of war. Given our current acceptable loss ratios, 91.2% K.I.A is strongly indicative of a pyrrhic victory.

-The number's coming out of WWII are only slightly less grim. American K.I.A/M.I.A tallies at the end of WWII was 407, 316 American lives killed or missing. 671, 846 W.I.A. Included in the K.I.A count are the 1, 124 P.O.W's captured and detained in Nazi Prison camps in Europe and the 12, 935 American lives lost at the hands of the Axis power, Japan.

While we can agree that the CW was fought in a smaller theatre in terms of geography, than was WWII, America paid a more terrible price domestically than we did abroad.

I think you will find it is minimalist and not flair. If you chose to study a little history you might find exactly how minimalistic it is.

History records that minimal engagement as the most loss of life in armed conflict the country has ever been in. Your gauge might be geography but History predicated its degree of depth on loss of American lives as a more accurate measure.

    Restore the monuments? Why?

However, before we condone the removal of more monuments, why not do it peacefully. We are a nation of laws, or at least we claim to be. So introduce legislation banning monuments that are deemed to be detrimental to the country under very clear standards. Then authorize the peaceful removal of the offending statuary and replace it with acceptable works.

Does anyone in here think that rioting, and destruction by a mob of frenzied people is a better way of doing it? Collateral damage be damned?

Now there is a thinking citizen. Notice how his thought process followed an elegant logic, transparent in it's objective with a linear progression of thoughts and ideas aimed more towards a peaceful resolution even though there is charged rhetoric already in place. We call that good ol'American ingenuity...solve the problem with a minimum of blame. I whole heartedly agree with every word sir.

Good luck if your politicians are anything like local politicians in UK, here in Bristol we had the Colston statue torn down. With none of the complexities of history you have on the matter all we had to decide was how much money a man had to give to charity, even if he made it slave trading, to keep a statue in the city centre. 25 years of centre left councils and mayors and all they did was put a small explainer plaque on the base.

So where did you come with that ridiculous idea? Clearly you put very little thought into it! See you forget something ! It's called the First Amendment, the Right to Free Expression, Govt doesn't have the right to do that, nor do other people. If you did that, MLK statues could be banned too! You can't pick and choose that way!
Thats also why we say you liberals are little soft upstairs and don't know what you are talking about.

As I said before. I don't support going around and tearing down monuments for publicity sake.

Its NOT about about "erasing history" Its about CORECTING it. Confederate monuments were erected in another time. To exalt and promote the glorious, "lost cause." Today such symbols have no place. Move them to museums or to an appropriate alternate location. Confederate monuments and flags have no place in or around government buildings or important institutions.

But people cannot enter into those government buildings if you do not agree with them.

This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. It has proven to be one of the most dangerous threats to the country since the Civil War to allow the southern states to create their false narrative about the cause of the Civil War and appease them by allowing them to have confederate monuments and the Confederate Flag. All confederates were in fact and in deed traitors to the United States of America and should have been treated as such dying in disgrace.

But instead allowing them to be seen as heroes by some is in large part what just led to the violent insurrection that resulted in six deaths, sedition, an attempted coup and threats of terrorism and a civil war. And that must end.

But that's the point why should traitors who bore arms against their own country, have a place left after such base betrayal?

Many of the Confederate officers had already accepted a Commission in the Federal Army. So after they raised their right hand, Swore the Oath of Loyalty, was vetted into service as Officers...they then betrayed their Oath of Affirmation to the Nation and we are to believe they maintain an equitable share the same as those exquisite Soldiers who kept their Honor and they're Oath?

There is an old axiomatic "To the victor goes the spoils". A lot of Southerners are clinging to a brutal time period, that will forever be a stain on the Nation's Honor, a dark period in the countries fledgling beginning best lost in the ether of time and forgotten by all persons who profess to follow the Rule of Law.

I assure you sir, I am intimitely familiar with the Nation's history, painfully at times aware of the present, and prescient enough to deduce that men like Nathan Bedford Forrester do not deserve to be honored in our society, for what, making bedsheets fashionable after five attire as he and his ilk spread hate and division, clung to stereotype and conspiracy while totally spinning the truth into what ever form best covered their night time perfidy...sound familiar yet?

Robert E Lee, was also a National hero for his actions in the Mexican -American War. he was also asked to lead the Union Army! He declined because it was "at the time" asking him to invade his own home , and home state ! Many of the Confederate Generals were West point graduates, and let go with honor to serve their southern states ! You are ignorant about civil war history!

War is a racket. Possibly the oldest. Definitely the most brutal. It’s the only racket where the gains are measured in money and the losses by lives. - that is a quote from a highly decorated general named Smedly D Butler. Look him up you might learn something.
