Florida police departments rocked by 29 COVID deaths as DeSantis bungles pandemic response

According to a report from AXIOS, Florida police departments are reeling with reports of multiple deaths from COVID-19 and a surge of infections taking law enforcement officers off of the streets.

Working off a report from FOX13 that states that twenty-nine law enforcement officers in Florida have died of COVID-19 so far, Axios notes that police departments throughout the state are being stretched thin in Florida which has been one of the hardest hit as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) battles local leaders over mask mandates.

Axios reports that Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd admitted that "... the majority of those hospitalized with COVID are unvaccinated," before issuing a statement where he explained, "Listen to the doctors, don't listen to the politicians; get your vaccine. ... If you didn't have motivation before to get the vaccination, I hope that Christopher's untimely death will give you the motivation," following the death of Polk County sheriff's deputy Christopher Broadhead, who died last Monday at the age of 32.

The report goes to point out that about 50 Polk County Sheriff's office staffers have reportedly tested positive for COVID -- with five in hospitals and one on a ventilator.

"Nearly 100 Sarasota County Sheriff's employees were out with COVID, deputies told the outlet last week," Axios is reporting before adding, "19 St. Petersburg police staff members were out sick as of Saturday, but the department said no one was hospitalized."

DeSantis is currently under fire from multiple directions over his handling of the Covid crisis with Politico reporting last week that his polls numbers are plummeting and his re-election in 2022 no longer assured.

      Just noticed this article.
Why do they post this as alarming? There are about 50,000 LEOs in the state of Florida, which means the death rate from Covid-19 among them is 58 per 100,000. Which is lower than 48 other states general death rate from Covid-19.

Why anyone would laud what this guy does. He may have several redeeming qualities, but his dogged ignorance of COVID-19 far outweighs any of the good he might have done. His actions on COVID-19 are deliberate, and that makes it unforgivable!

14 portable morgues head to Central Florida hospitals to help with overflow of COVID-19 deaths

ORLANDO, Fla. (WESH) — Central Florida hospitals are dealing with an overflow of COVID-19 deaths.

The Central Florida Disaster Medical Coalition is sending 14 portable morgues to area hospitals to help make room.

Florida foster dad to 75 children dies of COVID-19 after 4 cardiac arrests
The following hospitals have been allocated portable morgues:

    • AdventHealth
    • Halifax
    • Orlando Health
    • Leesburg
    • HCA-East Florida
    • HCA – North Florida
    • Steward
    • Cleveland Clinic
    • Health First
AdventHealth and Orlando Health have both been allocated three portable morgues each.

An email obtained by our NBC affiliate, WESH 2 News, Thursday confirmed that the Central Florida Division of AdventHealth has reached the capacity of hospital morgues due to the influx of COVID-19 patients.

The email from AdventHealth says the hospital system has begun using rented, refrigerated coolers at 10 campuses in Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, and Volusia counties, adding those coolers are also becoming filled.

The email said, “We believe this backup is due to a throughput slowdown at local funeral homes which is causing us to hold decedents for a longer period of time.”

The hospital says in the message they are in contact with regional hospital disaster coalitions and a request for assistance has also been made to the Florida Hospital Association.

“Since there is no disaster declaration for the state, we are unable to request assets such as FEMORS, but they are being contacted for guidance,” the email said.

The latest report from the state says nearly 44,000 Floridians died during the pandemic, more than 1,700 than last week’s report.

Florida caught using 'statistical sleight of hand' to create 'artificial decline' in COVID deaths: experts

With Florida experiencing a record COVID-19 wave, and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis under intense scrutiny for his handling of the pandemic, the state's Department of Health recently created an "artificial decline" in the number of deaths attributed to the virus, experts say.

In mid-August, without notifying the media or the general public, the department abruptly changed the way it reports COVID-19 deaths, according to a new report from the Miami Herald. Previously, the department counted deaths by the date they were reported. But now, it is tallying deaths according to the date the person died.

As a result, the state reported on Monday that only 46 people died from COVID-19 during the previous week. Under the old system, the number would have been 262.

"If you chart deaths by Florida's new method, based on date of death, it will generally appear — even during a spike like the present — that deaths are on a recent downslope," the Herald explained. "That's because it takes time for deaths to be evaluated and death certificates processed. When those deaths finally are tallied, they are assigned to the actual data of death — creating a spike where there once existed a downslope and moving the downslope forward in time."

Shivani Patel, a social epidemiologist at Emory University, called the move "extremely problematic" and said it creates an "artificial decline" to make it "look like we are doing better than we are."

"It shouldn't be left to the public, to scientists, national policy makers or the media to guess as to what these numbers are," Patel said. "We know from the beginning that dates matter and that they tell us different things."

Economist Tim Harford, author of "The Data Detective: Ten Easy Rules to Make Sense of Statistics," referred to such unexplained changes in data reporting as "statistical sleight of hand" that may be designed to confuse the layperson.

"When numbers are presented in a flattering light, an expert will generally be able to see through the dazzle quite quickly. That said, I still think the truthful-yet-deceptive framing of numbers is a serious problem," Harford said, adding that it can lead to dangerous public mistrust and cynicism.

"COVID is a matter of life and death and people deserve to have information that is both accurate and understandable without having to decode it," Harford told the Herald.

Florida breaks its record for daily COVID-19 deaths -- again

The state of Florida has broken its record for the highest daily average in COVID-19 deaths yet again.

The Miami Herald reports that Florida on Thursday reported 1,338 new COVID-19 deaths, and the state has also averaged 325 deaths a day for the last week, which the paper calls "a record high."

And unlike other states that were hit early with the delta variant of the novel coronavirus, Florida has not seen a significant decline in cases and is now averaging more than 22,000 new cases per day.

Florida also still has nearly 15,000 residents hospitalized
with COVID-19, which accounts for roughly one quarter of all people hospitalized in the state.

Despite this, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has refused to back off his opposition to mask mandates and vaccine mandates, and his administration has taken steps in recent weeks to strip funding from schools that implement mask mandates and to fine businesses that ask customers for proof of vaccination.

Considering where thinskin gets his news (ring of fire, The young turks and the guardian) it isn't surprising the old boy would think Ron DeSantis (not DeSatan, try to focus) couldn't "get away with it".

You know, since he also thinks clinton did nothing wrong paying a foreign agent to dig up dirt on a political opponent in 2016, but it was wrong for trump to do the same.

15 Miami-Dade school staffers die of COVID in 10 days: report

    Ron DeSantis (Screen Grab)

On Friday, NBC 6 Miami reported that 15 staffers and educators in the Miami-Dade County school system have died of COVID 19 — just in the past ten days.

"Sonia Diaz, a spokesperson for several unions in the school district, confirmed the number of deaths to NBC 6," reported Johnny Archer. "Miami-Dade County Public Schools resumed classes on Aug. 23, and it's unknown when the employees contracted COVID-19."

The news comes as school districts and state governments around the country wrestle with how to handle the continued spread of the Delta variant.

"One of [the victims] was Abe Coleman, a teacher for more than 30 years," said the report. "In addition to teaching, Coleman was a mentor and Site Director for the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Program, overseeing the Holmes Elementary location. Coleman helped shape the lives of hundreds of young men over the years during his service for the organization that mentors young minority men in Miami Dade County."

As Florida experiences some of the worst COVID-19 numbers in the country, even surpassing its death toll at the height of last summer's wave, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has continued to attack mask mandates, seeking to prohibit school districts around the state from enacting them — even as some districts in Republican strongholds acknowledge the need for mask rules.

A judge recently ruled DeSantis cannot enforce the mask mandate ban. Despite this, he has continued on with his plan to try to strip pay from local officials who impose mask mandates, starting with officials in Broward and Alachua Counties.

Notice how the invertebrate supercop does not use the reply function as he is afraid of debate but he is welcome to present evidence (supercop knows all about evidence and planting!) supporting his assertion about the payment of foreign agents which I assume is like bribing the Ukranian head of state.

If memory serves it was the Republican party that originally hired Mr. Steele.......oops!

The Republican party did NOT hire Steele. The Washington Free Beacon (an American conservative political website) commissioned Fusion GPS to dig up dirt on trump when he announced he was running for president. That research was canceled when Trump won the nomination. There was no foreign research or foreign agents involved in the Free Beacon research. And apparently to hide the source of the funding, the DNC/Clinton laundered the estimated $1.3 MILLION payment through their law firm, Perkins Coie. That pesky Federal Election Campaign Act makes it ILLEGAL, what they did when they hired Steel, a foreign national.

Guess you don't give a fuck about anyone but yourself. I am fully vaccinated, but I still wear a mask when I work because I work with the public. While I may catch covid being fully vaccinated (and yes, people are catching it while still being fully vaccinated), I chose to wear the mask so that if I am asymptomatic, I won't pass it on to others.

But hey, you go right ahead and believe this is about DeSantis wanting to run for president. Spin and rev!

Florida’s funeral homes are overwhelmed by COVID-19 deaths: 'Funerals and funerals and funerals'

One of the ways to gauge the severity of a COVID-19 surge in a particular state or city is how busy funeral homes become — and in Florida, according to CBS News, employees of funeral homes are absolutely swamped.

In July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that one in five new COVID-19 cases in the United States was occurring in Florida. Ron DeSantis, Florida's far-right Republican governor, has been receiving a great deal of criticism for his response to the COVID-19 surge; DeSantis has opposed social distancing measures, forbidden public schools from having mask mandates, and tried to score cheap political points with his MAGA base by railing against expert immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci.

CBS News' Khristopher J. Brooks explains, "In the last week of August, Florida hospitals averaged 279 deaths per day — up from 52 in July, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The spike in fatalities, although not yet definitively linked to the coronavirus, is strongly suspected to stem from the ongoing surge in cases caused by the Delta variant. Overall, the state has reported a total over 44,000 coronavirus deaths over the course of the pandemic, according to a New York Times tracker. COVID-19 has claimed so many lives in Florida that funeral directors said there aren't enough hours in the day to schedule all the services, a local TV station reported."

The local television station that Brooks is referring to is WFLA Channel 8, the NBC affiliate in Tampa. WFLA's Melanie Mitchell, on August 25, reported that funeral directors in Tampa are "working around the clock, seven days a week."

One of the funeral directors CBS News interviewed was 48-year-old Richard Prindiville, director of the Highland Funeral Home in Apopka, Florida. Prindiville told CBS News, "There's been days I've come home, and I'm exhausted — and I'm talking to my daughter, and I'm falling asleep as I'm talking to her. Every day is funerals and funerals and funerals."

According to Brooks, Prindiville "routinely works 14-hour days booking funerals, meeting with grieving families, transporting bodies and overseeing services." John Ricco, executive director of the Florida Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association, told CBS News that in recent weeks, funeral workers in Florida have been as busy as they were during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Some funeral homes in Florida, Brooks reports, are running out of space for bodies of people who have died from COVID-19. And funeral homes have so many burials to arrange that they are having to ask the families of the dead to please be patient.

Prindiville told CBS News, "What makes it difficult for us nowadays is just explaining to family members that we cannot have — and we'll have to hold off having — a funeral. In an hour, I could have six death calls, and I'm back to figuring out how to piece stuff together."
