Maggie Haberman: Trump Believes He’s Not Getting Sufficient ‘Deference’ from Ron DeSantis

New York Times’ Maggie Haberman is reporting that Donald Trump is preparing for a political collision with Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) with his latest vaccine comments.

The former president made headlines on Tuesday night when he gave an interview to One America News Network in which he bashed the “gutless” politicians who refuse to publicly disclose whether or not they’re vaccinated. Trump has been pushing back on anti-vaccine positions lately, which puts him at odds with many conservatives who refuse to be vaccinated and/or won’t say whether they’ve received the shot.

DeSantis has confirmed that he got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine months ago, though he declined to say if he got a booster shot while the Omicron variant has been spreading through Florida and beyond. Haberman noted that the former president’s Tuesday night comments shed some new light on what Trump recently told her about his vaccine messaging:

“This would indicate Trump’s ‘must tell the truth’ message to me about the timing of his vaccine comments a few weeks ago were about DeSantis, who is increasingly under his skin,” Haberman said.

Uh yeah read the quotes about how he watches pols not answer, it's almost certainly DeSantis he's referring to

Haberman expanded on this later, saying Trump “isn’t getting the deference from DeSantis that he wants in the pre-2024 leadup.”

“Trump could always decide not to run but every indication is he will. And once again he’s moving to set the terms of engagement with his potential rivals while those rivals are mostly averting their gazes and hoping he goes away,” she said. “If DeSantis or Pence or whomever runs, they’re gonna have to make a real choice at some point about whether they want to have a cage match every day with someone who enjoys it in a way that 75 percent of the political world doesn’t.”

DeSantis is proving to be a better mini Trump than Trump when it comes to corrupting every aspect of Florida government for nothing more than keeping him in power. But there may be a silver lining to that dark cloud of dictatorship. Trump is mentally ill and when he sees DeDantis out Trumping him he will have to try and destroy him.

How Ron DeSantis yields 'a tremendous amount of power' over Florida politics: 'Cross him once, you’re dead'

    Meaghan Ellis, AlterNet
    January 16, 2022

    Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is considered one of the most powerful governors to ever hold office in the state of Florida, according to a new report.

Per Politico, the Republican governor exerted even more power over top state officials and lawmakers by "cracking down on election crimes, spending $8 million to transport 'unauthorized aliens' out of state and targeting 'wokeness' in schools."

"Democrats, who are in the minority, are unable to stop him," Politico reports. "And Republicans in the Florida Legislature are enthusiastically carrying out his wishes or are unwilling to buck him."

“He’s become the 1,100-pound gorilla in state government,” said Tom Lee, a member of the Republican Party and former president of the Senate who worked with four different governors over the course of his 18 years with the Legislature. “Gov. DeSantis is extremely popular relative to most of his predecessors. With that goes a tremendous amount of power.”

Lee also noted how Republicans have enabled the governor.

“Republicans are doing very well and hanging together on a lot of these issues. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” said Lee. “He’s been very effective in picking issues and having his finger on the pulse on how the public reacts… When you are on the trajectory he is on right now, you are not going to have a lot of detractors in your own party.”

“There are no second chances,” said one former legislator, who spoke to Politico anonymously. “It’s well known you can’t go against him. If you cross him once, you’re dead.”

A number of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have also expressed concern about the imbalance of legislative power within Florida's state government. State Rep. Ben Diamond (D-St. Petersburg, Fla.) offered critical remarks about the power disparity between DeSantis and the Legislature noting that they have an obligation to “their constituents, not the governor.”

“While Gov. DeSantis is the leader of his party, there are a number of Floridians depending on their legislators to represent their best interests, not those of the governor and his potential presidential campaign,” Diamond said.

One Republican lawmaker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, shared a startling assessment of the governor's legislative role. "They are not going to embarrass Ron DeSantis," the lawmaker said. "Ron DeSantis is essentially the speaker of the House, the president of the Senate, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court right now.”

According to State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando, Fla.), DeSantis' popularity among "rank-and-file Republican voters" is a large part of the problem as many lawmakers within his party refuse to challenge his authority.

“In addition to his veto pen, Republican lawmakers see him as appealing to their base, so if they question him they’re questioning the base which would hurt them on the campaign trail,” Eskamani said. “So not only do they consent to his extreme agenda but some try to appeal to it by filing their own bills grounded in the culture wars.”

How is this any different than the shoe that's on the left foot? I'm talking Democrat dominated states like NY, California, and Illinois. Crime is lower, the economy is doing very well, and, oh yes, people are moving out of blue states to DeSantis Florida. Only fellow flaming liberals agree with Stumbler. As the mental health experts pointed out Trump's brain in nearly reptilian. It cannot fathom nuance and can only feel himself. And so he will respond to any perceived threat with attack whether the threat exists or not or whether the attack makes sense or not.

This is going to be fun and funny to watch.

'Dull DeSantis' is Donald Trump's new private attack against the Florida governor

    Sarah K. Burris

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis isn't grateful enough for what President Donald Trump has done for him, the ex-leader has complained privately.

According to Axios, Trump is trashing DeSantis as an ingrate with a "dull personality." According to the one-term president, DeSantis has no chance of beating him in the 2024 race for president, sources who've spoken to Trump told the site.

DeSantis performed well in early straw polls, but only if Trump didn't win. If he went up against Trump in 2024, DeSantis flopped.

Axios noted that DeSantis through the first punch in the battle when he told the "Ruthless" podcast, his biggest regret in office was failing to be "much louder" in March 2020, when Trump told Americans to stay home during the early part of the pandemic.

His comments likely come more as a response to Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), who attacked DeSantis last year for kowtowing into lockdowns. She said that her state, which has a population smaller than Jacksonville, Florida, never shut down, where Florida did briefly close along with the rest of the vast majority of the U.S.

Like Trump's attacks on previous candidates, Trump thinks that DeSantis is low energy.

"He says DeSantis has no personal charisma and has a dull personality," the source told Axios.

Another source, however, said that Trump's true anger comes from DeSantis refusing to say whether or not he'll run for president in 2024.

This is just funny as fuck. First it looks like Roger Stone is starting to panic because his Oath Keeper buddies have been indicted and they could lead the feds to him. So naturally Stone is going to do everything he can to stay in Trump's good graces. Which means if Trump is angry with DeSantis he is gong to jump all over him. Which is great for us progressive/liberal/Democrats because we love the smell of treasonous conservative/Republican cannibalism. We love watching them tear each other up. And giving us the attacks we can use later.

The long knives are out for Ron.

Roger Stone Rips into ‘Yale Harvard Fat Boy’ Ron DeSantis Amid Reports of Tensions With Trump

Former Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone tore into Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on Monday after an Axios report detailed former President Donald Trump’s frustrations with the governor.

Axios reported Sunday night that Trump is “irked by DeSantis’ popularity and refusal to rule out running against him” in 2024. The report cited sources close to Trump, saying the former president has been “trashing Ron DeSantis in private as an ingrate with a ‘dull personality.’”

Stone took the criticism a step further, writing on social media, “Trump sometimes President Donald Trump hits it right on the nose. Ron DeSantis Yale Harvard fat boy can’t get out of his own way. Not smart. Not honest and not going to be president.”

Stone, known for his conspiratorial rhetoric, added that DeSantis was “An unknown congressman with a bad haircut and an ill-fitting suit until Donald Trump made him governor.”

Stone, who has been a Republican political consultant dating back to the 1970s, continued, “I know where he was when he was missing. Ask Emerald Robinson.” The idea that DeSantis was missing was a popular barb that emerged on the left in late December when critics asked “Where is DeSantis?” amid a spike in Covid-19 cases in Florida.

    RUN ROGER RUN
Stone has threatened to run for Governor in Florida as a LIBERTARIAN, in 2022, unless DeSantos pledges to NOT run AGAINST Trump in 2024

Stone’s logic is DeSantos would not be a viable candidate in 2024 if he loses the Florida Governorship to a DEMOCRAT in 2022

And this 1 time I actually agree with Roger Stone,

    did I say THAT?

Why would Oath Keepers being indicted, and possibly leading the Feds to him, make Stone want to stay in Trump's good graces? What on earth can Trump possibly do to help Stone in that scenario?

Damn, I agree with username1. Did I actually say that out loud???

I can't believe that either. But it could happen for one very simple reason. Everything revolves around Trump and he is literally and clinically mentally ill. Just like this. It makes no political sense at all for Trump to be turning against DeSantis. Its just that he is jealous of his popularity and sees him as a threat. So against all reason and logic Trump is attacking DeDantis. And since his cult followers share his psychosis they jump on board the attacks as well.

And there is no way to predict what will happen because there is no way to predict what Trump will do next because he does not know himself.

The Democrats are facing just incredibly steep odds of being able to hang onto the House and Senate. But every little bit of this treasonous conservative/Republican cannibalism helps. They were actually holding DeSantis up as a model that Republicans can follow to win. And now Trump and Stone are trying to destroy that model even though DeSanits molded himself after Trump. It is hilarious to watch.

'Fat, slow and dumb': Trump ally Roger Stone ramps up attacks on Ron DeSantis as feud escalates

Trump ally Roger Stone is ramping up the war of words against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

As reported by The Daily Beast's Zachary Petrizzo, Stone on Monday described DeSantis as "fat, slow, and dumb" in a diatribe against the man who could be Trump's rival for the 2024 GOP nomination.

Stone also said of DeSantis that "the Yale Harvard governor will never be president" because, among other reasons, he "opposes constitutional open carry.”

Trump and DeSantis have now been trading barbs for weeks, with DeSantis slamming Trump for not firing Dr. Anthony Fauci at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Trump implying DeSantis was "gutless" for refusing to say that he received a booster shot against COVID-19.

Trump has also reportedly called DeSantis "dull" and is angry that the Florida governor is not giving him more deference and gratitude for helping him launch his political career.

'Smarty-pants' Ron DeSantis is about to get 'crushed' by Trump: conservative writer

    Brad Reed
    January 17, 2022

    Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been ratcheting up his criticisms of former President Donald Trump, most recently when he suggested that Trump let Dr. Anthony Fauci pressure him into issuing too many restrictions at the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Conservative writer Jonathan Last, however, believes that DeSantis's gambit is going to massively fail.

Writing in The Bulwark, Last argues that DeSantis is too much of a "smarty-pants" for the GOP base, which wants a more genuine ignoramus on par with Trump.

Among other things, Last notes that DeSantis is being evasive about whether he got a booster against COVID-19, which the GOP will see as a sign of weakness.

"If this turns into a hot war, Trump is going to crush him," Last writes. "Maybe it’s possible to outflank Trump on vaccines, but not if you’re a phony who took the vaccines. Republican primary voters will smell that a mile away."

Last also thinks DeSantis is underestimating the damage that will be done to his long-term prospects if he challenges Trump and loses.

Once you’ve bent the knee to Trump, you have to fight like hell just to keep your station," he writes. "Moving up in the world? Forget about it. Why is this? Because no one who has submitted to Trump after getting clobbered by him is capable of selling the dominance politics that Republican voters want."

Trump allies think Mitch McConnell is behind leaks about feud with Ron DeSantis

    Sarah K. Burris
    January 17, 2022

Composite image of President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Photos by Gage Skidmore.

It was reported Sunday that former President Donald Trump has been increasingly annoyed with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) because he won't say that he isn't running for president and step aside for Trump. The problem, however, is that Trump hasn't said whether or not he is running, so it doesn't make a lot of sense for anyone else to prematurely withdraw until Trump decides whether or not he's running.

According to sources close to Trump, the ex-president has been calling DeSantis "dull" and complaining that he was the one who "made" the Florida governor.

But according to Trump's advisers, the one who is really behind the rumors is actually Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), a major GOP foe of Trump's.

NBC News reported Monday evening that "Trump advisers say that they see a hidden hand at play," as they see McConnell in a pitched battle with Trump over the future of the Republican Party.

The Trump advisers pointed to a podcast where DeSantis threw the first punch. He claimed that his biggest regret in office was failing to be "much louder" in March 2020, when Trump told Americans to stay home during the early part of the pandemic.

According to Trump's people, McConnell's longtime adviser, Josh Holmes, is a co-host. Twitter was then flooded by angry MAGA fans who attacked DeSantis for going after Trump.

"To many in Trump’s camp, it all looked like a setup," said NBC News.

“I like Josh. Josh is great. But he's a wholly owned subsidiary of McConnell World. And there's no way you can tell me that this was all a coincidence,” said a top Trump adviser.

McConnell clearly sees DeSantis as the lesser of two evils, the adviser claimed.

Holmes denied having ill intent toward Trump and said that he doesn't coordinate with McConnell over his podcast, calling it "insane."

Trump feels 'betrayed' by DeSantis after singlehandedly creating his political rise: NYT reporter

    Matthew Chapman
    January 17, 2022

    '

On Monday's edition of CNN's "OutFront," New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin broke down the implications of his story that former President Donald Trump is turning on Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over his apparent unwillingness to step aside for him in a presidential contest.

"I think the last five years of political history of Donald Trump would suggest this was probably inevitable, given that both of them harbor political ambitions," said Martin. "Look, Trump clearly has designs on being president, again. I think DeSantis is widely assumed to have White House hopes himself. So, you know, as big as the state of Florida is, it's not big enough to contain both men, politically at least. So not — not terribly surprising."

Martin then explained why Trump feels particularly aggrieved at the Florida governor.

"I think Trump feels a level of betrayal. He feels like he made Ron DeSantis," continued Martin. "You know, folks who don't follow Florida politics super close don't realize this. He — Ron DeSantis was basically a back-bench House member, not terribly well known, running against a very prominent statewide official in Adam Putnam. And he was — he was not going to win that primary unless and until Trump endorsed him. And Trump did do just that, and the rest is history. So I think Trump feels a sense of political ownership over the governor and — and the fact that he is not feeling that reciprocity right now in terms of, you know, the governor not being willing to say I won't run for president in '24 if you run the race, I think has stunned Trump."

"So, major GOP donor who is on this show frequently, and I know he told you, quote, 'He is Trump but a little smarter," said anchor Erin Burnett. "The thing is, though — which is an interesting thing — here we are. Recent Reuters poll shows 54 percent of Republicans back Trump, 11 percent DeSantis. Sure, it's early. How does DeSantis change that?"

"I don't know if he does, Erin," said Martin. "I think DeSantis is kind of like — to borrow a sort of seasonal metaphor here, kind of like one of those NFL teams that need some luck to get to the playoffs. He needs other things to happen to get a playoff berth, and I think that probably includes Trump either not running or being, you know, seriously weakened politically a year from now."

'Trump could crush DeSantis' -- but the Florida governor's power is growing: NBC reporter

The feud between Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump has spilled into public view, but one political insider sees a chance for the Florida governor to steal some of the former president's thunder.

DeSantis criticized the former president's response to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and NBC News reporter Mark Caputo explained to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" how that signals a shift in the political dynamic between the two top contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

"I think at this point, and notice how I said 'at this point,' Donald Trump is still the center of gravity of the Republican Party around which others revolve," Caputo said. "He's got so much weight that he could kind of crush DeSantis in that. However, as time goes on and DeSantis becomes more popular in the GOP, things could change. A week is a lifetime in politics, and we're talking about 2024."

Trump has privately groused to allies that DeSantis hasn't publicly pledged that he won't challenge Trump for the nomination, and he appeared to take a swipe at the governor, but his guidance of Florida through the pandemic has won him many fans within the GOP.

"There is an interesting every evolution that happened around DeSantis," Caputo said. "He got elected in 2018 and took office in 2019, and around March 2020, the pandemic happened, and he was a subject to a lot of criticism from the national news media and from a lot of experts and, at first -- things changed with the delta variant in August -- but what you saw up until August of 2021 was DeSantis became more and more powerful with the base as he resisted more and more of the experts in of the media and what Democrats said he should do with mask mandates, later with vaccine mandates, and so he sort of grew into that role."

"DeSantis has a real kind of 'take on all on all comers' sensibility to him, he kind of can get in a fight on an empty room," Caputo added. "The base loves that."

Never let it be said Trump and his treasonous conservative/Republicans only use Hitler and the Nazi playbook to try and make Trump dictator for life, Oh no, they are capable of expanding their horizons.

    1. I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this—who will count the votes, and how.

DeSantis election police force panned as ‘a door prize for a QAnon pep rally’

Efforts by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to create a special police force to oversee elections have been panned as a tool to intimidate voters.

"The proposed Office of Election Crimes and Security would be part of the Department of State, which answers to the governor," The Washington Post reported Tuesday. "DeSantis is asking the GOP-controlled legislature to allocate nearly $6 million to hire 52 people to 'investigate, detect, apprehend, and arrest anyone for an alleged violation' of election laws. They would be stationed at unspecified 'field offices throughout the state' and act on tips from 'government officials or any other person.'”

Jonathan Diaz, a voting rights lawyer at the nonprofit Campaign Legal Center, questioned the need for such a police force.

“There’s a reason that there’s no office of this size with this kind of unlimited investigative authority in any other state in the country, and it’s because election crimes and voter fraud are just not a problem of that magnitude,” said Jonathan Diaz, a voting rights lawyer at the nonprofit Campaign Legal Center. “My number one concern is that this is going to be used as a tool to harass or intimidate civic-engagement organizations and voters.”

Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren argued the DeSantis plan was a joke.

“The bottom line is there is no widespread election fraud in Florida,” Warren said. “It’s a microscopic amount. Elections today are the most secure that they have ever been. This is not a serious policy proposal. This is a door prize for a QAnon pep rally.”

In 2020, only 75 complaints of election fraud were referred to law enforcement or prosecutors in Florida.
