So when I say I have been at war with the lie of conservatism as it is preached and practiced in this nation what does that mean. And here are examples of it now and I may add some later. And will point out their own lies in the process.

1. Conservatives claim they are fiscally responsible and worry about both budget deficits and the national debt claiming their concerns are for your children and grandchildren.

But history has proven that is a lie. Both deficits and the national debt increase when "conservatives" are in control. The National debt dramatically increased under Reagan, George HW Bush, and doubled under George W Bush. And budget deficits also increased under them. And under George W Bush would have increased even more except Bush kept the cost of two wars off the budget. And VP Dick Cheney said "deficits don't matter."

2.Conservatives preach that the federal government should not interfere in business and the federal government should not be bailing anyone out. But just like when Reagan was president and even more dramatically when Bush was president when the greed and corruption of conservatives crash a segment of the economy such as savings and loans during Reagan's term and much more dramatically the banks, insurers, and Wall Street collapse due to their own greed and corruption the first thing they do is run to the federal government to get bailed out at taxpayer expense and get it.

3.Conservatives preach that government regulations stifle economic growth. But then when regulations are relaxed and government watchdogs fail to enforce them the greed and corruption takes over and segments of our economy are looted to the point they collapse. Just like they did with the savings loan industry did during the 1980's. And much more dramatically when lack of regulations and enforcement lead to the economic collapse in 2008 that started the Great Rescission and resulted in the Federal Reserve having to make $18 Trillion in emergency loans to stop the global economic collapse.

4. Conservatives preach that tax cuts will spur economic growth. But the only time they can point to where tax cuts and economic growth might have actually coincided is clear back in the 1960's when John Kennedy was president. All other times the only thing tax cuts resulted in was increased deficit spending and increases in the national debt.

5. Conservatives preach individual freedom and liberty that should not be infringed by the federal government. But then turn right around and dictate drug testing for all employers and employees in the majority of industries changing the most basic fundamental of our constitution form you are innocent until proven guilty to you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent.

They also consistently oppose a woman's right to her own individual freedom to choose whether to have a baby or not, even though that constitutional right was affirmed by the United States Supreme Court. And oppose whether people should be able to marry who they want or be who they want.

6. Conservatives also warn against what they call Sharia Law in what they see as a Muslim threat. But then turn right around and insist that Biblical law and Christian beliefs must be written into law and protected at the expense of everyone who is not Christian.

7. Conservatives also preach we must have a strong national defense and protect the US from our enemies. And that used to include especially Russia. But now that Trump is elected they turn right around and support Putin/Russia and contend that Russia interfering in our elections is no big deal. And our president colluding and capitulating to Putin/Russia is just fine.

And I will be adding more to this in the near future. But this proves when I say conservatism is a lie as it is preached and practiced in this nation that is something I can prove and the conservatives cannot prove me wrong.

 

God bless you for the work you do. The label "conservative" was co-opted many years ago, so today's conservatives bear no resemblance to those who first adopted it. This doesn't bother them because they don't care if a label is inaccurate, or even just dead wrong. All they want is an emotional reaction, with no real thought to support it.

American conservatism has one overriding goal: skew things as much as possible in favor of the well to do. American conservatives are not even consistently in favor of laissez faire because they support business subsidies.

Opposition to abortion is a sop thrown to the religious right that few leading Republicans feel strongly about. When Ronald Reagan was governor of California he signed a law legalizing abortion there.

When Donald Trump was asked if any of his girl friends had aborted the results of their encounters together he refused to answer. At least he did not lie.

 

And Bron I have seen two true conservative in my life. One I followed and one I actually know. William F Buckley and the honorable Sen. Alan K Simpson. And they both had two things in common. One was the real values of conservatism which they did not waver from even when when other Republicans constantly did. And the other was they would tell you exactly what they thought every time and whether you liked it or not did not make a fuck to them.

And there may be more and I invite any and all "conservatives" on this board to name others if they can. But those are the only two I recognize.

 

Also let me add this. We true liberals need true conservatives. The competing ideologies are absolutely essential if we are to remain a truly free and independent nation. And I freely admit that means there is a constant struggle between those competing ideologies. And that is not only the way it was supposed to be. Those two competing ideologies where present and manifest the day the founders sat down to write our constitution. But it has to be true conservatism. Not the lie of conservationism as it is preached and practiced in this nation for the past 60 years where the conservatives preach one thing and then turn around and practice what ever is most convenient and profitable for them at the time.

President Eisenhower was a conservative in the best sense of the word. He recognized that the reforms of the New Deal had broad popular support, so he did not try to repeal those reforms, as many Republican leaders wanted him to do. He tried to administer New Deal programs more efficiently and less expensively.

Barry Goldwater was a reactionary. He did not like the reforms of the New Deal and openly ran against them. As a result in 1964 he suffered a well deserved defeat, and the Democrats won two to one majorities in both houses of Congress.

Richard Nixon was a conservative in the Eisenhower tradition. Nixon accepted most of the reforms of the Kennedy-Johnson years, and moved forward on environmental regulations. Nixon would look better in history if he had not tried to win the War in Vietnam.

Gerald Ford was also a conservative in the Eisenhower tradition.

During his administration Ronald Reagan ran a stealth campaign against the reforms of the New Deal and the Great Society. He knew that increases in domestic spending like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and unemployment compensation were popular with most of the voters, including a large percentage of Republican voters. He claimed that tax cuts - going mainly to the rich - would generate more tax revenue, so it would not be necessary to cut popular middle class entitlements.

Reagan may have been stupid enough to believe the fantasy of supply side economics. His more intelligent advisers knew better, and hoped that rising deficits would make it possible to scale back popular middle class entitlements.

Since Reagan, Republicans have continued to pretend that tax cuts pay for themselves. Those Republicans are not conservatives. They are not even reactionaries. They are right wing radicals who continue to assert an economic theory that has been decisively disproved.
