So I am not very smart when it comes to business things. And I do not have family or friends that I can talk to about this sort of thing. That is why I am here on a porn forums asking for help/advice.

So I have a 2016 Kia minivan, with about 102,000 miles on it.

It is financed through my credit union with a great 4.5% APR.

I went to the bank a few days ago, and asked them how much my van is worth and they said $13,000 as an outright sale, or about $10,600 trade in value.

I only owe around $8,600 on the van so that was great news!

So I want to trade the van in on something used, but better on gas.

My current monthly payment on the van is $157.

So what would be the best way to go about trading it in, and what price range should I be looking in for the newer car if I want to keep my payment around $160?

Any help, or advice would be greatly appreciated, as like I said before I am not the smartest person when it comes to these things.

 

First, go to one of the car web sites like Kelly blue book or truecar.
They will show what your car is worth as a trade in, and if you sell it outright to someone.
Note that these are actual data from actual sales, not an "expert" opinion.

Next, you can use these same sites to find whatever car you want next, and what they are selling for.

Then, if you're buying new you can go to your favorite dealer (or see can you just buy it on line) and do the deal.
One bit of advice;
Do not fall into the negotiating trap.
You can chit chat with the salesman for a bit, you know, cause you gotta, you know, give em your name and what not, and let em inventory your car, but then you can just tell them;
That's my trade in.
This is the car model etc. I want.) be specific; all the options, even the color.
I'm expecting XX for my car, and I'll pay you XX for that car.
This is not a negotiation, do not bother coming back with a different offer, I will walk out.
This is what I want, this is what I will pay, if you can do that great, if not, see ya.

And stick with it. If they want to play the games, walk out.
Not to worry, if they can do the deal (and they will, if you're being fair with them) they will call you.
Oh, and sometimes doing this a couple days before the end of the month can also help; they all got quotas and the end of the month is always a stress for them.

Also, check with your bank and see what kind of finance deal they will offer you.
The dealership will make you a financing offer, do a comparison and choose the best one for you.

Also, be aware that when you do the deal, the finance weenie will want to sell you a maintenance contract, and a warranty deal, and blah blah blah.
These are all profit points for car dealers, and they count on people to not pay attention at the close and buy this shit from them.

 

They always will try to talk you down, but if you leave (after they have your phone number), they will usually call you in a day or so and tell you their boss has agreed to accept the deal.
