Former Idaho GOP lawmaker arrested on fugitive charge in Georgia after being accused of rape

Former Idaho Rep. Aaron von Ehlinger was arrested Friday in Clayton County, Georgia, on a fugitive from justice charge, according to Clayton County court records.

Ada County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Patrick Orr told the Idaho Capital Sun via email that von Ehlinger was arrested and in custody at the Clayton County Jail, which is located about 20 miles south of Atlanta. No bond amount is set, according to Clayton County records.

On Monday, following the refusal of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to provide any Republican votes in the House for funding the federal government and raising the debt ceiling, assistant House Speaker Katherine Clark (D-MA) reminded the GOP leader of his own words six years ago, when Republicans controlled the House and did not want to own a debt default themselves.

"When the United States makes promises, it keeps them, which is why the House voted today to avoid the threat of a debt default," wrote McCarthy in the tweet posted by Clark, first flagged by Newsweek.

The debt ceiling is an overall limit on the amount of money the United States can borrow — although not, crucially, a limit on the amount it can spend, meaning that going over it would trigger a catastrophic default on money already spent, which could lead to a global economic shockwave and millions of Americans --including troops and retirees -- having to go without federal payments.

Republicans are refusing to contribute any votes to raising the debt ceiling, despite having raised it numerous times themselves, which could force Democrats to find a way to get around the filibuster to pass a debt ceiling increase alone.

Corey Lewandowski, a longtime top adviser to Donald Trump, is accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward one of the former president's major donors — allegedly stalking her and bragging about his penis size during a charity event in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Lewandowski, who served as Trump's first campaign manager in 2016, now heads his Make America Great Again Action super PAC, and the allegations have shaken up the former president's inner circle, according to a report from Politico.

"Trashelle Odom, the wife of Idaho construction executive John Odom, alleges that Lewandowski repeatedly touched her, including on her leg and buttocks, and spoke to her in sexually graphic terms," Politico reports. "Odom said that Lewandowski 'stalked' her throughout the evening. Four people who were first-hand witnesses at the event corroborated Odom's allegations. POLITICO also spoke with two people — one who was at the event and another who was not — who described conversations they had with Odom about the incidents immediately after they happened."

In a statement provided to Politico, Trashelle Odom said: "He (Lewandowski) repeatedly touched me inappropriately, said vile and disgusting things to me, stalked me, and made me feel violated and fearful. I am coming forward because he needs to be held accountable. I am blessed to have a loving husband and family behind me. I want other women to know that you can be heard, too, and together we can stop terrible things like this from happening."

Lewandowski, who was previously accused of unwanted touching by pro-Trump singer Joy Villa, didn't respond to requests for comment. His Las Vegas attorney, David Chesnoff, told Politico, "Accusations and rumors appear to be morphing by the minute and we will not dignify them with a further response."

Meanwhile, an attorney for the Odom family said in a statement that Lewandowski "remarked on the size of his genitalia, described his sexual performance and showed Odom his hotel room key." The Odom family attorney said Lewandowski touched Odom approximately 10 times, told her she had a "nice ass," threw his drink on her, "called her stupid," and stated "repeatedly that he is very powerful and can destroy anyone."

In her statement, Odom said that along with being concerned about her personal safety, "I was also fearful that Corey has the power to destroy and ruin everything my husband and I have been working on in our business, personal and charitable endeavors."

Witnesses said Lewandowski appeared to be intoxicated, and selfies from the event showed him just above Odom's right shoulder, with his tongue sticking out of his mouth.

Lewandowski allegedly followed Odom to an after-dinner party, where she was in tears and pleading for help. He stalked her around the bar and continued to try to touch her. Odom feared for her safety in part because her hotel room was right next to Lewandowski's, and she timed her departure on Monday to avoid crossing paths with him.

The Odoms reportedly gave $100,000 to the Make America Great Again Action PAC that Lewandowski heads, but they are expected to ask for their money back unless Lewandowski is fired.

"I love my wife, and I want accountability now," John Odom, Trashelle's husband, said in a statement. "We are exploring our legal options at this time to make sure [Lewandowski] cannot harm anyone else."

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was found guilty of two defamation lawsuits after pushing the lie that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a "false flag" operation carried out by "crisis actors."

"Judge Maya Guerra Gamble on Monday issued her ruling for default judgments against Jones in two different cases, which means he and the conspiracy-theory-spewing outlet Infowars have been found liable for all damages and a jury will now be convened to determine how much he will owe the plaintiffs," Sebastian Murdock reported for HuffPost.

The rulings against the InfoWars host were made public on Thursday.

"The ruling — which is often referred to in Texas as a 'death penalty sanction' for a party unwilling to comply with court orders — is a rarity in the legal world. Jones, who is now on his seventh lawyer in these cases, had years to provide documentation requested by the court, including internal company emails," HuffPost reported.

The lawsuits were brought by Leonard Pozner and Veronique De La Rosa, whose 6-year-old son Noah was killed in the shooting and Scarlett Lewis, whose 6-year-old son, Jesse was also among the 20 children killed. Six adults were also murdered in the mass shooting.

"In total, nine families who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook shooting have leveled lawsuits against Jones and Infowars for the damage he and his outlet caused. Since then, Jones has lost multiple legal battles in his many lawsuits and was ordered to pay nearly $150,000 in legal fees in 2020 for failing to provide discovery documents for the plaintiffs," HuffPost reported.

In 2018, the watchdog group Media Matters for America created a video documenting the conspiracy theories Jones pushed about the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
