Trump-appointed ambassador 'lined the president's pockets' by making sure to stay at his hotels: report

U.S. Ambassador Kelly Craft isn't sure what science is really all about (Photo: Screen capture)

Kelly Craft, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump to be an ambassador first to Canada and then the United Nations, insisted on staying at his hotels during travel.

Forbes has obtained internal emails showing that Craft told a staffer that she wanted to stay at Trump's D.C. hotel when she was in town for a conference for ambassadors.

"I would prefer the TRUMP HOTEL," Craft wrote to the staffer.

And this was not a one-time arrangement, as Forbes found that "Craft stayed at Trump's D.C. hotel at least three times in the first half of 2018 while in town on government business."

Jack Patterson, a spokesperson for government watchdog American Oversight, said Craft's decision to enrich the man who appointed her on the taxpayer's dime was symbolic of the corruption that was rife during Trump's tenure.

"Ambassador Craft's apparent eagerness to direct business to a Trump-owned hotel sends a signal that U.S. foreign policy is pay-to-play," he said. "An American diplomat using their position to line the president's pockets is an example of the casual corruption that permeated the Trump administration and undermines confidence in the United States."

Trump PAC Lavishing $37K a Month on Rent at Trump Tower as Other Tenants Flee: Report
    DONATIONS WELL SPENT

Trump Tower is reportedly struggling to lease out its prime office space during the disruption of the pandemic, but it does have one reliable tenant: the ex-president’s own political operation. According to The Washington Post, the Make America Great Again PAC has been paying the Trump Organization $37,541.67 each month to rent some rarely used office space on the 15th floor of the NYC building. The Post reports the super PAC was previously paying $3,000 a month to rent a kiosk in the tower’s lobby, even when the lobby was closed.

Campaign-finance experts said the arrangement doesn’t appear to be illegal but is ethically dodgy. “He’s running a con,” said Paul S. Ryan from watchdog group Common Cause. “Talking about political expenses—but, in reality, raising money for self-enrichment.” Trump spokeswoman Liz Harrington said the PAC is renting the space at “market rate... to help President Trump build a financial juggernaut to help elect America First conservatives and flip both the House and Senate to the Republicans in the midterm elections.”

Newly unredacted documents reveal a litany of allegations from Mike Pompeo’s time at the State Department

Newly unredacted records from a whistleblower complaint in the State Department have shed light on more allegations against former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and members of his former staff.

According to documents obtained by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Pompeo and others were accused of misconduct.

The publication reports: "The alleged misconduct included false or misleading statements to the agency's legal department, misuse of government resources on personal and political activities potentially prohibited by the Hatch Act, verbal abuse of employees by Mike and Susan Pompeo and directives to staff not to communicate in writing in order to evade transparency laws."

The unredacted documents come two years after the redacted version of the whistleblower complaint was filed with the State Department Office of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG is said to have excluded many of the previous redactions in the version of the documents released to CREW.

    "The complaint alleges
"everal senior career Foreign Service officials who held positions of responsibility within the Executive Secretariat" turned a blind eye to Pompeo's "questionable activities" and, in some cases, "facilitat[ed]" them, according to CREW.

Employees in the State Department's Office of the Legal Adviser "expressed concern that some of these activities may have violated [the] Hatch Act or other regulations," but the whistleblower was "unaware that any resolution was reached, potentially because senior officials in the Executive Secretariat repeatedly declined to seek clarification or guidance from [the Office of the Legal Adviser] despite requests from subordinates to do so."

The new documents also detail the aftermath of former Inspector Steve Linick's removal from his post, which was part of a larger Trump-led effort to oust inspectors. The report also indicated that staff members were "stunned" by the directive.

"[T]his is all so surreal three days later. I'm nervous about the future," the OIG employee wrote in a May 18, 2020 email. In a later email, the official added, "I just heard Trump say we needed to get rid of the 'Attorney Generals' as a whole…Oh dear."

CREW has also received other documentation as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit aimed at uncovering information about Pompeo's attempts to hinder the investigation into the allegations of misconduct against him.

Post-Presidency Protection for Trump Kids and Officials Has Cost $1.7 Million, Says Report

In the dying days of the Trump presidency, he signed a highly unusual order that gifted six extra months of Secret Service protection to his four adult children, their families, and three of his favorite officials. Since then, the arrangement has cost taxpayers $1.7 million, according to spending documents obtained by The Washington Post. By law, only ex-presidents, their spouses, and any of their children under age 16 are entitled to Secret Service protection. But Trump handed extra protection to Trump Jr., 43, Ivanka, 39, Eric, 37, and Tiffany, 27, as well as their spouses and kids. The protection was also given to Trump’s former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and former National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien. Out of the seven, only Mnuchin responded to a request for comment from the Post, with a spokesman telling the newspaper that Mnuchin only accepted the extra protection “because government officials advised him to maintain it.”

Two longtime Republican operatives indicted — and there's a Russia connection: report

Reuters legal reporter Jan Wolfe revealed Monday evening that two Republican Party operatives have been indicted after helping Russians donate to political campaigns in 2016.

The Justice Department revealed in a statement that Kentucky's Jesse Benton and Florida's Roy Douglas "Doug" Wead were "charged with one count of conspiracy to solicit and cause an illegal campaign contribution by a foreign national, effect a conduit contribution, and cause false records to be filed with the FEC, one count of contribution by a foreign national, one count of contribution in the name of another and three counts of making false entries in an official record."

Benton was just pardoned by former President Donald Trump for a bribery scandal while working for Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) in Iowa in 2012. In that scheme, Benton and colleague John Tate bribed state officials to change their endorsements to Paul for the Iowa Caucus.

After being pardoned for that, Benton is now being indicted again along with Wead for arranging for a Russian National who wanted to donate to a 2016 presidential campaign to be able to meet with the candidate.

Developing: Two longtime GOP operatives have been indicted. They allegedly helped a Russian make a campaign contribution to Trump in 2016. One of the defendants, Jesse Benton, managed campaigns for Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell. He got a Trump pardon (for an unrelated scheme).

    5:00 PM · Sep 20, 2021

"Benton reached out to individuals at Political Committee B, the national party committee for Political Candidate 1's political party," the indictment explains. "He then arranged for Foreign National 1 to attend a political fundraising event and get a photograph with Political Candidate 1, in exchange for a political contribution to Political Committee C, a joint fundraising committee comprised of the campaign committee for Political Candidate 1, Political Committee B, and related state committees. Foreign National 1 ultimately wired $100,000 to Company A, a political consulting firm owned by Benton."

He then tried to disguise the wire transfer by labeling it "consulting services" and crafted a "cover story."

Wead went to the fundraiser with the foreign national Sept. 22, 2016 with a translator (Foreign National 2). They all three had their photos taken with the candidate.

"Following the event, Benton repeatedly represented to a consultant working for Political Committee B and Political Committee C that he had already sent the promised contribution for the event, but in actuality he delayed sending the contribution," said the DOJ. "Benton ultimately filled out a contributor form, indicated that he was the contributor, and used a personal credit card to make a $25,000 contribution. Benton retained the remaining $75,000 of Foreign National 1's money. Because Benton falsely claimed to have given the contribution himself, three different political committees unwittingly filed reports with the FEC that inaccurately reported Benton, rather than Foreign National 1, as the source of the funds."

Read the full report at the DOJ.

South Dakota Guv Summoned Agency Head After Daughter’s Real-Estate License App Was Rejected

Days after her daughter’s application to become a certified real estate appraiser was rejected by a state agency, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem brought the state employee in charge of the agency, as well as the woman’s supervisor and the state labor secretary, to her office. Noem’s daughter was also present at the meeting, AP reported on Monday. Her application was approved four months later. Government ethics experts consulted by AP agreed that the events constituted a clear “conflict of interest and an abuse of power.”

A week after the license was granted, the labor secretary allegedly called the 70-year-old agency employee to demand her retirement. An age discrimination complaint the employee subsequently filed was withdrawn after the state paid her $200,000; she left her job in March. The terms of her settlement also bars her from disparaging state officials, and she declined to discuss details of exactly what went on in the meeting. A spokesperson for the governor’s office, in declining an interview request, told AP the outlet “is disparaging the Governor’s daughter in order to attack the Governor politically—no wonder Americans’ trust in the media is at an all-time low.”

A congressional investigation found three members of Donald Trump's private club Mar-A-Lago illegally exerted influence over the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The so-called "Mar-A-Lago Three" -- Ike Perlmutter, Marc Sherman and Bruce Moskowitz -- used their ties to then-president Trump to violate the Federal Advisory Committee Act by communicating with department officials to further their own personal interests, reported Stars and Stripes correspondent Nikki Wentling.

"The documents we are releasing today shed light on the secret role the Trio played in developing VA initiatives and programs, including a 'highly profitable' plan to monetize veterans' medical records," wrote investigators from the House Oversight Committee and the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

The Government Accountability Office previously reviewed 223 email exchanges the Trump associates had with VA officials between 2016 and 2018 and found they made recommendations in 28 of those messages and provided information about other initiatives in 70 others.

Perlmutter is chairman of Marvel Entertainment, while Sherman is an attorney and Moskowitz is a Palm Beach physician, and none of the men has any previous experience in veterans' affairs.

Well of course. Now that Trump is no longer president there is no reason for people, groups, and foreign countries to buy up rooms at his DC hotel hoping to bribe him for favors.

In the midst of reports that say Trump International Hotel could be sold to the highest bidder soon, the Washingtonian's Jane Recker wanted to see what things are like at the hotel these days.

What she found wasn't the "bustling schmooze spot for the red-cap set, with bands of tourists stopping in to snap pics" spectacle that it used to be.

"It was 5 pm on the Tuesday after Labor Day, and roughly a dozen customers were in evidence—a tiny number for such a cavernous space. We camped out at the bar with a martini and a plate of fries, taking in the (lack of) scene. At one point, a maskless man approached us and asked, 'Are you part of the Trump book club?' We were not. He wandered away, soon joining a small group across the room," Recker writes.

"A woman came to the bar and got a glass of Grenache. 'I usually order the Trump wine," she said, "but . . . .' She gazed around. 'This is really a change from what it used to be. It used to be packed all the time.' She gulped her wine and left."

As Recker points out, the Trump Organization has been trying to sell the hotel since 2019, and she says that the lack of foot traffic in the building is likely one of the reasons Trump's company wants to get rid of it.

REVEALED: Mike Flynn hid $200K payments for Middle East nuclear plan before joining White House

Michael Flynn received $200,000 in undisclosed payments for consulting work in the Middle East before joining Donald Trump's administration.

The retired U.S. Army general was paid for his work in 2014 and 2015 on a plan to build 40 nuclear power plants in the Middle East, which never came to fruition but would have involved companies from Canada, France, Russia and the U.S. constructing and managing nuclear plants in Arab nations, reported the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

Flynn briefly served as Trump's first national security adviser before he resigned in disgrace for lying to FBI agents about his communications with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and his undisclosed work for the Turkish government.

Robert Mueller's prosecutors filed charges against Flynn, who pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI, but Trump pardoned him in November.

The newly revealed payments to Flynn came from a U.S. firm connected to the project, ACU Strategic Partners, although his relationship to the project had been reported in 2017.

Two U.S. House committees investigated Flynn's involvement in the project, which he had not disclosed before joining the White House, after Newsweek reported he had been repaid between $10,000-$15,000 for travel expenses.

An audit of a Dutch company that specializes in transport revealed the $200,000 payment to Flynn.

Trump official billed US for $456,000 in private jets over five months: report

    Bob Brigham
    October 06, 2021

Former HHS Secretary Tom Price on CNN (image via screengrab).
New information is coming out about the use of private jets by Tom Price, the former Georgia congressman who spent eight months as Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2017.

"Tom Price, the health and human services secretary, resigned under pressure... after racking up at least $400,000 in travel bills for chartered flights and undermining President Trump's promise to drain the swamp of a corrupt and entitled capital," The New York Times reported at the time. "Already in trouble with Mr. Trump for months of unsuccessful efforts to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health care program, Mr. Price failed to defuse the president's anger by offering regret and a partial reimbursement."

A Freedom of Information Act request was filed by The Washington Post and the new emails the newspaper obtained shed light on how the scandal began.

It started in April of 2017, only four months after Price took over the department. Price's staffers sought to fly him to Los Angeles after his Delta Air Lines flight was delayed due to bad weather.

"Officials quickly secured a $29,000 charter flight — which also had to be scuttled, as tornadoes plagued the D.C. region. But the day's events left a scar on Price's top aides, who vowed that the Trump Cabinet official would never again wait on a commercial airline's schedule, and foreshadowed a five-month travel sprint in which the health department spent $456,000 in taxpayer money on Price's charter flights across the United States," the newspaper reported.

In one case, Price did not even need to fly at all, much less on a private jet.

"One of the final trips came in September 2017, when health officials chartered a jet for Price, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway and their aides to fly round trip between Washington and Philadelphia — at a cost of $14,955 to taxpayers, according to government records," The Post reported. "The department's Office of Inspector General later concluded that Price's flight to Philadelphia wasted more than $10,000 in taxpayer money compared with flying commercial, and that he could have made the trip by train."

Prior to joining the Trump administration, Price spent a dozen years in Congress and chaired the House Budget Committee.
