I don't know what your pension will be, and I'm in the USA, not the UK, so the dollar amount will be different, but it seems like I can retire soon with a pension and get over $3,000 a month and keep the health insurance.

Dee I almost everything at home do meself, most of my car mantainance do meself, but can not bragg that saved much,. Money come and they go. My oppinion is that most important thing in saving is. Ability of not to making money, but to keep them, save them, hold them. Because with money you make your personal needs go higher and higher. New car, best parfume, hiliday, jewlery. All that unnesecery things that like a heavy anchor dragg you to the bottom. It is impossible to save when there is nothing left, one must learn to save when there are much money.

Yup. Most repairmen these days start out charging a hundred bucks or more just to show up (service call). Then whatever parts they replace will have a huge markup.
Before you bitch about how much they charge per hour remember, if it was something you knew how to do, you wouldn't need them.
I had a friend in the appliance repair business. He offered people an contract for annual maintenance on water heaters. No one ever took it. "I can do that. How hard is it to flush and fill a water heater" of course they never bothered to actually do it themselves but when their basement was flooding at 2 am because the bottom of their water heater corroded through, they expected him to come out immediately and fix it.
A service call (under contract) would cost you $50. An emergency service call in the middle of the night would cost you $150 plus parts an labor. He said he never got a call that wasn't an emergency.

 

I have a hAndyman business. I dknt charge a service fee. i look at it like this. If the person is willing to have me in their home and allow me to do my thing then THANKS. If they watch over me then I usually tack 25 to the bill for "unexpected labor." It's always at least 50 to do work of any sort. If jt turns out that not much was needed I say pay me what you can or what yoh feel is apropriate. Thise people call ms tims and again for easy fixes.
