I think if a drink gives you the confidence to do something that you have thought about in advance, or always wanted to do, that is no problem,

If you cannot remember anything the next day, that is not good and could be dangerous, never mind no fun if you cannot relive it again later !

Sorry. Alcohol is not an excuse for ones actions. Using alcohol to do something sexually, only to regret it later and saying, I was drunk and didn't know what I was doing, is not an excuse. You know exactly what you are doing. It's no different when you drink and drive. You know damn good and well the actions you are taking. You can't use the same excuse if you drive drunk and kill a family. Oh, sorry officer, I'm way drunk and didn't know what I was doing. My bad.

It's also a one sided excuse. It only works for females. If a female gets wasted and has sex with 5 men, she can cry rape and say, I was drunk and didn't know what I was doing. Case closed. If a man gets drunk and has sex with a lady and she regrets it, she can cry rape. He gets arrested. His defense can't be, I was drunk and didn't know what I was doing. He is told, you knew exactly what you were doing and alcohol is no excuse.

 

Be serious. What guy is going to charge a female with rape is she takes advantage of him when he's drunk. Problem is almost all females are sexually vulnerable if she's had too much to drink. I once had a neighbor girl (18) at block party, follow me around, comming on to me, grabbing me, and cajoling me to make out with her. It took all my willpower to turn her down. As I knew it was just the alcohol talking.

Alcohol lowers inhibitions and also impairs judgment. Which is why drunk people do stupid things.

You still know what you're doing. Its no excuse. Lowering inhibitions doesn't make you do anything. Alcohol doesn't lower your intelligence. Ultimately you make the choice. Like I said, a woman can't use being drunk as an excuse after killing someone in an auto accident. But they can use it after getting fucked. Does the alcohol know you're driving and let you keep your mental faculties? You can't have it both ways. If she is drunk and drives or if she is drunk and takes on the football team, she knows what she is doing. I've been drunk as fuck but knew I could fly. So I didn't jump off a 5 story building nor did I jump from a moving pickup truck. Alcohol doesn't make you do anything. You make you do things.

Not to mention women get off far easier for sexual offenses towards men than men do with women.

 

I think in the context of this question of when liquid courage becomes under the influence, I think that the line is when the alcohol snaps enough inhibitions such that you do things that you regret having done after sobering up. I think that really varies person to person.

I don't drink much these days, but in my youth I would get lit up regularly, but for me to really cross the line which I did only a few times I had to be extremely drunk such that I would be throwing up later and not remember what happened. At the same time, I knew people who would cross that line at a much lower level of inebriation. So from my experience, one cannot say that it is at a certain BAC like 0.15% or 0.20% causes you to lose your judgment. One person might start doing things they regret at 0.10% and another might not be crossing that line at 0.20%.

Alcohol absolutely has an impact on critical thinking and judgment. It’s why fine, responsible people often get dinged with driving offenses. Had they not been drinking, they’d have decided differently. They thought they’d be fine, because they felt fine, when in fact they were not. Had they been sober, they’d have known better.

While not an excuse, it is an explanation. You just have to be an adult and recognize that before you drink you better have a plan, because if you’re just going to react to any given situation and depend on your own judgment, it will be impaired after drinking.

So in a literal sense, for the general population, you go from “liquid courage” to “under the influence” with anything after one drink per hour.

 

The average person really only needs one or two good drinks and 10-15 minutes for the alcohol to do its magic to break down their inhibitions. Two or three is ideal. Other people with higher tolerance levels will need more. Also depending on what they need that courage for. Whether it's hitting on a woman, confronting someone, or looking to jump into a posible fight.

I think the OP was asking more about the point where the level of alcohol impairs the person's judgement so badly that they do things they regret rather than the point at which it has an effect. That certainly can be much higher than one drink per hour, and from my observations of people's level of stupidity when drunk compared to sober, seems to vary by person.

If I drink three beers over the span of say twenty minutes, I am certainly going have the impaired motor response and reaction times such that it is dangerous (and illegal) to drive. And if I were at a party, those three drinks might snap enough inhibitions for me to try and talk to a hot girl that if sober I might have been too afraid of approaching for fear of rejection. However, for me, those three beers would not cause me to do anything that I would regret later, like driving my car while drunk or fucking a girl passed out in a bedroom. I might be legally under the influence, but I would retain enough judgement to not be doing anything wrong.
