Parents withdraw child from school after 11-year-old was constantly called the N-word: report

Parents in a school district northeast of Seattle have withdrawn their child from the local school district due to what they describe as persistent racism.

Their 11-year-old is transitioning to remote learning because of his experiences with racism in the the Monroe School District, Fox 13 reported.

"When asked about the racism at the high school, Monroe Public School responded via a public information officer with a letter that was previously released to parents – specific questions went unanswered. When questioned about an 11-year-old driven from in-person learning, the district stopped responding altogether," Fox 13 noted.

The station interviewed A.J. and Craig Crecelius about their child.



"He started to be called the n-word to the point where he thought it was normal," Craig Crecelius said. "He broke down and told my wife about what was happening – and he said, ‘I don’t know, maybe it’s just a thing kids say.'"

""I think they just hope we stop talking about it and that it goes away," he added. "That’s really what’s pushed me to not stop talking about it."

School yard bullies, a kid reluctant to tell anyone, and an overreaction by parents.

 

I am a white heterosexual. I was picked on as a young adolescent. Bullies did not think I was a homosexual. They knew I was not good at fighting. Rather than complain to school authorities about it, I worked out with weights and took karate lessons. Eventually the bullies left me alone. At a high school reunion one of my former class mates told me that I was one of the three strongest boys in our graduating class. I am not sure that that was true, but I was stronger than the high school quarterback, who was taller and heavier than I was. That felt good, but it meant nothing. He got a college scholarship. I could not pass a football to save my life.

In retrospect I think that some of the techniques we were taught in karate class were impractical. That is a topic for another thread.

Nevertheless, I do not think that bullies' victims should be left to their own devices. Most of them lack the athletic aptitude to ever develop the ability to fight their tormentors and win. I believe that schools, and even the police should regard bullying as a serious problem.

We should keep in mind that whites living in or near black majority neighborhoods and attending black majority schools are often bullied by blacks. so the problem greatly extends extends beyond white privilege.

 

Shooter attended the only naturally desegregated high school in the Denver metro area during the civil rights movement.
He never felt threatened by any minority group, was in fact at times in the minority at some school functions.

Distant Lover's expected attacks on minorities exposes his limited experience with some minorities and the scars left by his mugging at the hands of a minority.

Republican bill that limits how race, slavery and history are taught in Texas schools becomes law

A more restrictive law designed to keep “critical race theory” out of Texas public schools became law on Thursday.

Under the new law, a “teacher may not be compelled to discuss a widely debated and currently controversial issue of public policy or social affairs.” The law doesn’t define what a controversial issue is. If a teacher does discuss these topics, they must “explore that topic objectively and in a manner free from political bias.”

It also requires at least one teacher and one campus administrator at each school district to attend a civics training program that will teach educators how race and racism should be taught in Texas schools.

There are more than 1,200 school districts in Texas. The cost to develop and implement the training program alone would be about $14.6 million annually, according to the Legislative Budget Board.

Senate Bill 3, passed during the Texas Legislature’s second special session ending Sept. 2, replaces House Bill 3979, which Gov. Greg Abbott signed over the summer. At the time, Abbott said more needed to be done to “abolish” critical race theory in Texas classrooms and lawmakers went to work to craft a more restrictive measure. The result was SB 3.

“It's not just about what a teacher may or may not say,” said Chloe Latham Sikes, deputy director of policy at the Intercultural Development Research Association. “It's also how they go about their class, how they design the class — how they might address really sensitive issues of race and gender and identity and sexism in their classrooms.”

Critical race theory is the idea that racism is embedded in legal systems and not limited to individuals. It’s an academic discipline taught at the university level. But it has become a common phrase used by conservatives to include anything about race taught or discussed in public secondary schools.

The new civics training mandated by the new law that requires attendance by at least one teacher and one campus administrator from each district will be created by the Texas Education Agency and it must be implemented no later than the 2025-2026 school year.

The state education agency has not yet released what this civics training program will look like. The law also requires the TEA to set up an advisory board for the training program.

The earlier attempt at a law to restrict what is taught in school caused so much confusion among educators that a North Texas administrator informed teachers at a training session in October that they had to provide materials that presented an “opposing” perspective of the Holocaust.

In records obtained by The Texas Tribune, the TEA has been advising school administrators that teachers should just continue teaching the current curriculum until the State Board of Education revises the social studies curriculum over the next year.

The new law also zeroed in on the New York Times’ Pulitzer Prize-winning 1619 Project, a collection of essays that centered on how slavery and the contributions of Black Americans shaped the United States. With this law, students cannot be required to read the 1619 Project essays. It also bars students from receiving credit for working as a volunteer with a political campaign or interning for companies or organizations where they will be lobbying. Also, any school district that uses an online portal to assign learning material has to give parents access.

“All of this is really about routing out any acknowledgement of the salience of sex, race, gender and silencing those conversations, which, in the end, ultimately hurt students of color and students in the LGBTQ community,” Sikes said.

'Typical Karen moment': Son charged after viral video catches him punching Black worker who refused to show mom his ID

A Tennessee man was charged with assault after he punched a parking garage worker who refused to show identification in a recorded confrontation that went viral.

Edward Brennan and his mother, identified as "Bitsy," spotted Johnny Martinez checking cars for parking permits in a Nashville garage and began watching him, and the worker said he tried to avoid the pair until they confronted him.

“You don’t belong here," Bitsy allegedly said. "How did you get here?”

A video of the Nov. 27 encounter that was posted on YouTube show Brennan and his mother questioning Martinez, who works in the River House apartment building’s parking garage, and demanding to see identification.



The video shows Brennan strike Martinez, who said he tried to retrieve a bottle opener that was knocked from is keychain during the attack, and the other man lunged at him.

Bitsy had called police on Martinez, but she and her son left before police arrived, but an arrest warrant was filed against Brennan on Dec. 2, according The Daily Beast.

Martinez said passersby are often curious as he checks for parking passes at the apartment building, but he said his headlamp, knee pads and lanyard usually indicate that he's on official business, and he said the encounter still made him anxious days later.

“I felt like crap,” he said. “I thought I was going to have a typical Karen moment.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene: Jan. 6 defendants are being mocked in jail 'because of the color of their skin'

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Tuesday suggested that people who allegedly rioted on January 6 are facing discrimination "because the color of their skin."

Greene made the remarks during a press conference that unveiled a Republican-back report on the January 6 defendants who are currently housed at the D.C. Jail. The event also featured Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ).

When she was asked about nationwide criminal justice reform, Greene argued that Nation of Islam literature should not be available in jails.

"Or information and curriculum that informs them because of the color of their skin, this is why they are being treated this way," the Georgia Republican said. "As far as the difference in the jail though, it's very clear, the Jan. 6 defendants, they were not allowed to participate in any of the continuing education curriculums that we were shown that other inmates and other pre-trial defendants are allowed to participate in."

"None of those things were offered for the Jan. 6 defendants," she continued. "They were isolated in a separate wing of the jail, where they are abused, where they are ridiculed, where they are mocked because of their political beliefs and because of Jan. 6 and because of the color of their skin."

WATCH: Bank calls cops on Black man after he tries to cash his paycheck

Reporter Eric Rasmussen of KSTP-TV in Minneapolis obtained police video camera footage of a "Banking while Black" incident at an area U.S. Bank branch.

Rasmussen reported that Joe Morrow stopped by the branch — where he had an account — to cash his paycheck after working a 12-hour shift at a grocery distributor.

"The manager? He came over and said, 'Joe Morrow? Your check (is) fake.' And I said, 'What?'" Morrow said. "He said, 'You people always coming in here with fake checks.'"

Morrow said he took 'you people' to refer to the fact he is Black and the network noted Morrow's check was real.

The body camera of Sgt. Justin Pletcher captured Morrow's interaction with bank manager John Askwith.

Morrow professed his innocence, "I work there, bro. And I'm going to report you too, bro. This is racial."

Sgt. Pletcher took issue with the charge of racial bias.

"Joe, I need you to calm down, first of all, OK? Don't say anything stupid because you're just going to get arrested for it," the officer instructed.

The manager then asked them to leave his office.

"The video then shows officers handcuffing Morrow after he appeared to stand up quickly from his chair," the network reported. "In the incident report, Pletcher wrote that Morrow "flexed at John (Askwith) in a threatening manner."

Samuel Myers Jr., a professor at the University of Minnesota and expert in racial disparities in banking, analyzed the video.

"This is a classic example of where things escalated beyond what they needed to escalate to," he said. "I wish I could say that this was an aberration. I wish I could say this was an outlier, but it happens a lot."

"The fact is these are experiences that Black people disproportionately encounter and the evidence is indisputable," Myers noted.

The network reports U.S. Bank "quietly agreed to a confidential settlement two weeks after 5 INVESTIGATES started asking questions about the incident."

"U.S. Bank declined multiple requests to interview Askwith or anyone else at the bank," the station noted.
