Michigan high school massacre: Another tragic example of how white privilege kills white people

There is no area of American life that has not been impacted by the color line in a society where white people are granted unearned advantages over nonwhite people. This is not an opinion, but an empirical fact. American society is literally structured by racism and white supremacy.

That is not to say that racism, white supremacy and white privilege benefit all people deemed "white" in the same way or to the same extent. Likewise, those same societal forces do not impact all people deemed "Black" or "brown" or otherwise not white in the same way either.

In the United States, racism and white supremacy constitute a power relationship that both actively and passively causes harm to Black and brown people because of the color of their skin and the value Western societies have assigned to it.

But they are not the only ones damaged. However counterintuitive this fact may be for some people, racism and white supremacy often hurt white people too.

Let's examine one recent example. On Nov. 30, a 15-year-old high school student named Ethan Crumbley allegedly went on a shooting rampage at his high school in Oxford, Michigan, killing four of his fellow students and injuring seven other people. Crumbley surrendered to law enforcement — which is somewhat unusual in mass shootings of this kind — and has been charged with terrorism and first-degree murder, among other crimes.

His alleged rampage was not a total surprise, but part of a much larger pattern of behavior. There had been indications for weeks (including posts on social media) that Crumbley appeared to be mentally unwell and a danger to himself and others.

Teachers and school administrators met with the young man and his parents about his behavior, which included violent drawings and verbal threats, and also spoke with him separately on several occasions. One meeting with Ethan Crumbley and his parents took place only hours before the shootings. Law enforcement could have been included in the meetings by school officials but were not, and the young man's backpack was not searched on the day of the shooting. If it had been, presumably school officials would have found his gun.

A teacher had also alerted school authorities that Ethan Crumbley was searching the internet on his phone for information about various types of ammunition. Instead of punishing him or seeking help, his mother, Jennifer Crumbley, sent him a text that read, "LOL, I'm not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught."

With that behavior, Jennifer Crumbley showed herself to be exactly the kind of mother that Rep. Madison Cawthorn, the far-right North Carolina Republican, has publicly encouraged to raise their sons as "monsters."

Ethan Crumbley was allowed to return to class after his meetings with school officials, including on the day of the massacre. He allegedly used a 9mm semiautomatic pistol that his father, James Crumbley, gave him as a gift four days before the killings.

After their son was arrested for his alleged crimes, James and Jennifer Crumbley fled the area. They were eventually found hiding in a partly abandoned industrial building in Detroit, about 45 miles south of their hometown. If these fugitive suspects had been Black, brown or Muslim it is entirely likely that they would have been killed by law enforcement. Instead, they were arrested unharmed. Their son was afforded the same type of privilege after allegedly committing mass murder.

Crumbley's parents have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and other crimes. They have also been given the option of going free on bail before their trial — even after they already violated the law by (apparently) attempting to escape to Canada. Again, if the Crumbleys were not white, bail would either not be granted or imposed at an extortionate level.

How many lives might have been spared in Oxford, Michigan, if not for the power of racism, white supremacy and white privilege?

Because gun violence is not generally treated as a public health emergency, and because white privilege tends to erase the role of whiteness and white masculinity in gun violence, this society-wide problem has not been properly addressed — except for the ritual stupidity of "thoughts and prayers."

The vast majority of school mass shootings are committed by white boys and white young men. As a result, they are seen as individual, anomalous events, rather than as a societal problem demanding intervention and resolution.

When it comes to Black and brown young people accused or suspected of even minor criminal activity, white supremacy punishes them -- all too often in extreme ways. Through what has been called "adultification," Black and brown children, even when extremely young, are perceived as inherently dangerous, and not permitted the presumed innocence, vulnerability and need for care, concern and love that society typically grants white children and other young people.

As a result, Ethan Crumbley was presumed to be innocent and incapable of hurting others. By comparison, Tamir Rice, who was 12 years old and playing with a toy gun in a park in Cleveland, was shot and killed by police only seconds after their arrival. Trayvon Martin, 17 years old, was stalked and killed by a street vigilante who was later acquitted of murder.

Black and brown boys and girls are punished much more severely in American schools, compared to white students, for the same offenses.

Ethan Crumbley and his parents are the product of an American gun culture rooted in a centuries-long history where guns were used to commit genocide against the continent's indigenous peoples and also to dominate and control Black people, whether enslaved and free. Guns were also central to a larger project of empire and expansion that involved the subjugation of nonwhite people in many different parts of the world. White America's relationship to guns and violence as an exclusive element of "white freedom" is also central to the Republican fascist project.

Quite predictably, Ethan Crumbley's mother is a member of Donald Trump's political cult, a movement fueled by white supremacy, misogyny, sadism, anti-intellectualism and other antisocial tendencies. In a letter to Trump, Jennifer Crumbley wrote:

Mr. Trump, I actually love that you are a bad public speaker because that showed sincerity, and humility. You changed your mind, and you said "so what." You made the famous "grab them in the pussy" comment, did it offend me? No. I say things all the time that people take the wrong way, do I mean them, not always. Do I agree that you should of shown your tax returns? No. I don't care what you do or maybe don't pay in taxes, I think those are personal and if the Gov't can lock someone up over $10,000 of unpaid taxes and you slipped on by, then that shows the corruption. I like that you have failed. I love it even more that those failures taught lessons and made you one of the most successful Business Men in my history.
I love that you are not from the political spotlight, maybe you are the hope that can really uncover the politicians for what I believe they really are. I have high hopes you will shut down Big Pharma, make health care affordable for me and my MIDDLE CLASS family again. I hope you uncover the cure for cancer, because there is one, we all know it, but you are the one to prove it. I'm not scared of your big personality and quick temper….
My parents teach at a school where their kids come from illegal immigrant parents. Most of their parents are locked up. They don't care about learning and threaten to kill my mom for caring about their grades. Do you realize Mr. Trump that they get free tutors, free tablets from our Government so they can succeed. Why cant my son get those things, do we as hard working Americans not deserve that too?...

Moreover, discussions of the Crumbley family in mainstream news media offer an example of how even the lethal and criminal behavior of individual white people is never presented as representative of white people as a group or whiteness as a social identity. If the Crumbleys were Black or brown or Muslim, or members of some other marginalized community, the dominant narrative would focus in on their "bad" or "neglectful" parenting with questions about "the family" and "fathers and male role models," "irresponsible mothers" and "the values of the larger community." Fox News and the larger right-wing echo chamber would have turned them into horrifying bogeymen, and focused on them for weeks.

In his book "Dying of Whiteness," public health expert Jonathan Metzl explains the connections between whiteness, white identity politics, masculinity, guns, violence and death:

The allure of this notion of armed white male power makes sense in many ways. Who wouldn't be tempted by a platform that claimed to increase one's privilege, power, safety, and authority? However, again, the math and the graphs suggest the dangerous, mortal underside of linking privilege so closely to instruments of warfare and of then supporting politicians and policies that all allow these instruments to be ever-more easily allowed into people's everyday lives and intimate spaces. The data overwhelmingly suggests that more guns mean more deaths, and particularly so for those very people whose privileges and potencies Man Cards and pro-guns policies claim to restore….


As this process plays out, the peril to white men comes not just from the instrument, the impulse, or even the legislation. Rather, privilege itself becomes a liability. White men themselves become the biggest threats to … themselves. Danger emerges from who they are and from what they wish to be.

American's public discourse does not create space for the kind of language that would be necessary to persuade white people that racism, white supremacy and white privilege are hurting them too. Indeed, as we see in the tragic gun massacre at Oxford High School and far too many similar incidents, white privilege is literally killing white people. For too many white people, this has become impossible to see: They value the psychological and material wages of whiteness — which are not dispensed equally among all white people — more than they value their own lives and those of their children, their families and their communities.

Teens who dressed as KKK members charged in Halloween Taser attack on Black child

Two Texas teens are facing hate crime charges after they allegedly dressed as Ku Klux Klan members for Halloween — then attacked at least one Black child with a Taser.

Noel Garcia Jr. and Rance Bolcik, both 17, were indicted Thursday by a grand jury in Refugio County, on third-degree felony charges of engaging in organized criminal activity and tampering with evidence, in addition to hate crime enhancements, according to Corpus Christi's Channel 6.

The indictment alleges that Garcia Jr. and Bolcik, along with an unnamed minor female, committed assault causing bodily injury to a juvenile, before altering, destroying or concealing clothing.

Michael Manning, an attorney for the victim, has described the attack — which occurred on Oct. 31 in Woodsboro — as a "heinous, inexcusable, disgusting tasing of a Black teenager by young men dressed as members of the Klu Klux Klan or KKK."



Manning said previously that he believes a second, even younger victim was also "terrorized" by the teens. He also criticized the school district for allegedly allowing the suspects to play in a football game the weekend after the attack.

The Woodsboro school district issued a statement at the time saying officials could not discipline the suspects because the conduct occurred off campus.

The president of the local NAACP told Channel 6 he had spoken to school officials in the wake of Thursday's indictment, and a news conference is planned for Friday.

Garcia Jr. and Bolcik reportedly were arrested at Woodsboro High School on Thursday about an hour after the indictment was handed down.

University of Utah opens investigation into alleged KKK recruitment drives on campus: report

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, the University of Utah is investigating an incident where men wearing Ku Klux Klan robes tried to recruit students in a dorm.

"In the [incident], which allegedly happened on Oct. 1, an RA reported overhearing some students in the student’s original dorm building talking about seeing some men dressed in KKK attire trying to recruit students to a white supremacist group," reported Courtney Tanner. "The U. again looked through three days of video but did not find anything fitting that description, the spokesperson said. She later clarified that the report noted that the men dressed in the white robes were inside the dorm."



The university has assigned the matter to the Racist and Bias Incident Response Team.

This comes amid another report last month about an incident in September, in which a pair of University of Utah students allegedly shouted the N-word at a contractor on a loading dock and pelted him with sunflower seeds and coffee pods from an upstairs window.

Fraternity suspended after 'despicable' video surfaces showing members singing 'I want to be a slave owner'

The University of Richmond suspended one of its fraternities, Kappa Sigma, after a video surfaced showing members singing a racist song, NBC12 reports.

In the video, students can be heard singing "The South will rise again" and "I want to be a slave owner."

“The behavior recorded in the video is shameful and despicable. I am appalled by what I have seen and heard,” University president Kevin Hallock said. “This is not who we are, nor who we aspire to be.”

But a student and member of the Black Student Coalition at the University of Richmond isn't buying Hallock's words.



“To say that this is not who we are is a lie, and I think we just wanted to call that out really clearly,” Shira Greer said.

“Just seeing them display that so comfortably and openly in that video is always somewhat disturbing,” Greer said. “It’s not surprising because I think we know these sentiments exist among many members of our campus community.”

“We are also continuing to push for the other demands as well for Black students, which include a multicultural house on campus and an endowed chair for Africana Studies that is upcoming,” Greer said.

According to the university's Student Government Association, racial incidents like the video isn't confined to one fraternity.

“The student governments are thoroughly disappointed and wanted to, again, denounce these actions on our campus community,” the SGA said. “This is not an instance limited to Kappa Sigma, as is evident by the past few months.”

“We want to make it clear that we are against the systems that continue to show themselves as perpetual agents in the normative culture of racism and other forms of hatred that have been apparent in the past few years. This video is just the latest in a series of abhorrent and unacceptable actions by members of our community,” the SGA said.

White father and son accused of using ‘fatal funnel’ to murder Black man in road-rage incident

A white motorist is being charged with first-degree murder after fatally shooting a Black motorcyclist in an apparent road-rage incident in North Carolina.

Roger Dale Nobles, 51, fired a shotgun from the driver's seat of his pickup truck, striking 32-year-old Stephen Addison in the chest at a Fayetteville intersection on Monday, WRAL.com reported.

Nobles' son, Roger Dale Nobles Jr., had gotten out of their 1992 Chevy to argue with Addison prior to the shooting, and the incident was captured on video.

Two security analysts who reviewed a six-second video of the incident said Nobles Jr., who has not been charged, played a key role in the murder, suggesting that he knew his father planned to shoot Addison.

Anthony Waddy, an analyst with SAV Consulting, said that in the video, Nobles Jr. "cleared a path" for his father to fire shots at Addison.

"Where he's actually standing in reference to, what we call in the military, a fatal funnel," Waddy told WRAL. "He's clearly out of harm's way."

Waddy also noted that Nobles Jr. didn't flinch when his father fired the shots.

"The most startling parts of the video are what did not happen, according to Waddy," WRAL reports. "Nobles Jr. looked down at Addison after he dropped to the ground, but did not turn to his father and did not appear surprised. Nobles Jr. also didn't render any aid to Addison, who ended up dying from his injuries."

The Nobelses reportedly waited for the traffic light to turn green before driving away. Nobles Sr. admitted to the shooting after police arrested him at his home.

Shahara Chance, Nobles Sr.'s Black neighbor, told the station she's had problems with him for years, and he has called her the N-word.

"He done drove in my yard and took pictures of me on my porch," Chance said. "He's shot his gun in the air telling me to turn my music down. I done been through hell with this man."

Addison, the victim, was a military veteran and father of three.

On Thursday, KING 5 News reported that William Cunningham, a man in Monroe, Washington, is being charged with a hate crime over an incident shown in a viral video.

"The charge stems from an incident at the high school on Nov. 10, 2021, where a white female student racially taunted a Black student during an altercation, according to the Monroe Police Department," said the report. "The victim and the teenage daughter had a confrontation in the school parking lot following an incident earlier in the day where the girl allegedly shoved one of the victim's friends in a school hallway. Video of the confrontation shows the daughter's boyfriend and the victim shoving each other, according to court documents."

"After the initial scuffle, the daughter went up to the victim and allegedly showed her father the victim's face on a video call," continued the report. "Cell phone video captures the father making death threats at the victim, saying 'if I see you, I'll kill you,' and calling the victim racial slurs, according to court documents."

In the video, Cunningham used the N-word and warned the Black student that he was a "big white cracker."

In recent months, several shocking racial hate incidents have made national news, one of the most prominent being a Louisiana judge who stepped down after video emerged of the N-word being used in her house while a burglary was in progress.

GOP candidate Shelley Luther says Chinese students should be banned from Texas universities

Shelley Luther, a Republican candidate for Texas House and hairdresser who became a hero of the anti-lockdown movement during the coronavirus pandemic, recently said in a since-deleted tweet that Chinese students should not be allowed to attend Texas colleges.

“Chinese students should be BANNED from attending all Texas universities,” Luther said in the Wednesday tweet. “No more Communists!”

In a follow-up tweet that is still online, Luther said the state's taxpayers "should not be subsidizing the next generation of CCP leaders," referring to the Chinese Communist Party. In a subsequent tweet, she said it is "common sense" that CCP members "should not have access to our schools."

On Friday, state Rep. Gene Wu, a Democrat from Houston who is Chinese-American, condemned Luther's comments and asked her to publicly apologize.

"Luther’s statements are ignorant, hateful, and incite violence against not only Chinese Americans, but all Asian Americans," Wu said in a statement. "To casually conflate all Chinese students in America with actual registered members of the ruling party in the People’s Republic of China is not only ignorance of an extreme nature, it is also the type of rhetoric that drives anti-Asian hate crimes."

Asked for comment Friday, Luther declined to apologize and attacked Wu, who was among the House Democrats who broke quorum and went to Washington, D.C., last year in protest of Republicans' priority elections bill.

"It doesn’t surprise me that a socialist Democrat who doesn’t even know how to show up to work thinks the position that communist Chinese citizens should not access taxpayer funded state institutions is racist," Luther said in a statement to the Tribune.

Luther's comments came as anti-Asian hate crimes have been on the rise. They increased by more than 73% in 2020, according to recent FBI data, far outpacing all hate crimes, which increased 13%.

Luther is challenging state Rep. Reggie Smith, R-Sherman, in the March primary. The district favors Republicans, so whoever wins between Smith and Luther is set to hold the seat after November.

Luther became nationally known at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 when she refused to shut down her Dallas salon in defiance of emergency orders. She was sentenced to a week in jail but was released after only a few days, via a motion granted by the Texas Supreme Court.

She became a vocal critic of Gov. Greg Abbott, a fellow Republican, and ran unsuccesfully for a state Senate seat in a special election later that year.
