So, were hotels in your experience segregated then or not?

 

I was kind of speculating that segregation was probably gone in 1951 DC. One post had mentioned a field trip to DC. 4 boys to a room and two beds. Teacher came in to talk to the boys about having maybe another student room with them, a young black male. I was born in '62 and by the time I was in the first grade, the Civil Rights movement was in full swing. TV was a big part of my growing up experiences. Every night mom, dad, my older sister and myself would sit and watch the CBS evening news with Walter Cronkite. Civil Rights, Viet Nam protests, students taking over admin offices on college campuses and the killings at Ohio State. Segregation was a southern thing. DC, even though in the south, was a place where if slaves could get there. would be free due to the fact that it is federal city and not a part of MD or VA. So, I would suspect that segregation wasn't enforced with any legal ramifications.

 

Oh wow, I was thinking of Walter Cronkite yesterday. My neighbor's daughter was married to his son. I never met the man, but he came to visit often.
Funny how ya think of someone, and suddenly they come up in conversation, isn't it?

 

That it is. I was talking to my mom yesterday and she was telling me that there was a woman she went to school with, a woman she worked with and another woman she knew but I can't remember the connection. She was talking about how she had been thinking about these women on separate occasions recently and how she saw their obituaries in the newspaper a day or two after she had thought about them. I told her she needed to focus her thinking onto other people.

Isn't that the way it always is. We h0ld these people up as being without fault and a member of the family, so to speak. Keeping up appearances to the world but those who are close to these people know the true monsters they really are

WHAT?!?!?! I had nothing but respect for the man, and also for the Amish, and y'all all are shattering my images as a young man.

 

Most of mine are caused by this time of yr. I'm pretty much through with the year a couple of weeks before Halloween. I really don't like the holidays and hearing how everyone is so hell bent on making it special and spending so much money on things. I'm just happy that things are back to "normal"

My Grandma's cousin was on the high school football team in about 1930 I think when they stopped at a restaurant in a town to the north of us. They were already seated and some had actually ordered when the owner came out and said they don't serve N words and the only Black player on the team would have to go sit on the bus. The team and coach just got up walked out and never stopped there again.

There were like maybe three Blacks in the town and just one Black family that the football player belonged to. And sure its racist by our standards today but his litter sister just ran with the with the white girls in town and she got the nickname Little Miss Marker. Which actually refers to sheep ranchers having one black sheep as a marker for every 100 white sheep in their bands so with a glance they could just count the the black sheep and know if they were even close to gathering the thousands of sheep their had.

The other black woman was the madam at the cat house but did double duty at Christmas time singing Christmas carols on the front steps of the whorehouse steps and the whole town showed up every Christmas to hear her.

And just as another anecdote once the old madam retired and started singing in the choir at the church full time she married a Church going white man. And one night he took in after her with a piece of stove wood and keeping with theme of the night she grabbed the kindling hatchet and buried it in his head three times. They called the local doctor that also happened to be the town coroner and as soon as he saw that hatchet sticking out of his head he knew they had a problem. He removed the hatchet. Signed an death certificate that said the cause of death was accidental blood loss. Called in some local boys and they held a midnight funeral before the County Sheriff could show up.

Needless to say I have always been proud of my heritage and the history of the town where my family was born and raised.
