I don't think color of ones skin is as much of a factor as is what a person was doing or where they where at when the arrest happens

 

A lot of my white friends I met in college believed that too. We used to have lively debates on the topic, until they actually start seeing it 1st hand. The devil is in the details, they saw the nature of the interactions and saw how I had to navigate police interaction in a way that was totally alien to them. A big part of the problem is more that police in general see white people as less of a threat and less likely to be criminal than black people.

It can be that inexperienced cops pay attention to skin color but it rarely takes more than a few months on the street to understand that hands and eyes are far more important indicators of someone's intent.

If a cop is paying attention to skin, dress, and accent they aren't looking at the hands or making eye contact and won't see it coming until its too late.

Body/Dash cams are good... However they are not perfect... As a rule I don't talk to cops without a lawyer present... Doesn't matter if I'm a witness or involved party.

 

There is an interesting Ted Talk suggesting that no one should ever talk to the police willingly. The notion is that there is nothing to gain.

 

Any half way decent lawyer will tell you to never answer any questions from the police with an attorney present..

 

This Ted Talk guy said that anything the police say will be viewed as hearsay while everything you say truly will be held against you.

 

See that's the problem... During a police interrogation they are not required to be honest, whereas if you, even unknowingly, are not fully honest. You can then be charged with a a crime.

 

Always Best to have all the facts and full understanding of what happened and why it happened before one decides who was right and who was wrong....

I spent most of my life as a US citizen and even I view this as an internal US problem and refuse to fixate on it in much the same way that I viewed necklacing and that form of torture murder both during and after apartheid as an internal South African matter. Not to mention the even wide scale state abuses in Iran or China or Russia.

Firearms don't seem to be as much of an issue there.

The police and all other professions have bad people who abuse their power. I hope all 4 cops get the maximum punishment for what they did.

However, I don't think things like this only happen in the US.

 

I'd say tactics are a little different for the average lawbreakers in Britain. If you pose a physical threat then they become similar quickly.
